Recruiting - the reason why coaches get fired sooner rather than later

Being a lame duck coach requires that he's out of here REGARDLESS of how we do in 2017. Does anyone think that is the case? I doubt it.

Nope -- unless Kelly decides to leave on his own, or ND severely tanks it in 2017, Kelly will be here in 2018 and beyond.

Java, I agree with you often, especially as to the Admin not willing to make the kind of changes necessary to be an elite football program again. Whether that is good or bad in the context of the university and its mission, is a different discussion. That said, I think you are being overly pessimistic about this years recruiting class, and the impact of same, by saying we aren't getting the talent to compete with mid-level teams. Even with the defections, this is a solid class, and we have three weeks to go before knowing if it is better or worse than that. Personally, I am impressed with the recruiting and coaching talent Kelly has added, and agree with you about S&C, and expect 2016 will prove an aberration, nothing more.
I should have been more clear, I'm speaking about our defensive recruiting only. On offense we have done excellent another WR or 2 would be good but that side of the ball is very good. On defense we are lacking numbers and talent.

the only real deficiency with offensive recruiting has been the 'big' back. The short yardage or RZ back.

Defense is lacking star talent for sure. However, with Elko coaching and player development, I certainly expect we have the level of talent on defense to regularly beat mid level teams now and in the future. As for beating the elite teams, we do need a couple of elite defensive players annually to compliment the level of talent we are recruiting, and we haven't been able to do this for several years now. Kelly has added some talented recruiters with these hires, and it will be interesting to see if they can crack this nut.

I think first we need to agree on a mid-level team. When I think of those I'm think of mid-table Big10, ACC, SEC, etc teams. When I look at the defensive recruiting the last couple years I see a huge problem in numbers and talent. Sure guys like Hayes, Kareem were great but we have exactly 1 DT recruit the last 2 years. LB recruiting has not been good, same with the CB position. So based on all that I really do think our defensive recruiting is not even as good as those teams I was talking about.

The only way I see it getting better is if ND wins 10 games next year. In fact I'd be willing to bet that if we win 8 games some of the current '18 commits won't stick.
