Positives

You state if he goes 8-4 or better - he is back, You are accepting 8-4 as an acceptable record for the ND head coach who has a career ND coaching average of 8-4 seasons to get another season as the head coach.

Learn to read. I did not say that I accepted 8-4. I said that an 8-4 records will bring Kelly back for another year. Don't put words in my mouth.

You, 78, the AD can enjoy watching "Kelly Ball". He may get 8 or 9 wins this year. ND has more or as good of talent than almost every team we play - based off recruiting rankings.

Please take a class in logic. You are obviously deficient in that area.

No I do not accept 8-4 - Did you read my post - I said if the AD did not fire him after an 4-8 season then the AD won't fire him after a 8-4 season since the AD will see that as a great rebuilding year. Hope you did not attend ND - your reading comprehension is not very good.
Of course you accept it. If you didn't t you wouldn t be here.we re fans .to not accept it is to no longer be a fan.

There were a lot of positives to take away from the first two games. The defense seems much better (and more fundamentally sound) than the last few years. Wimbush is a work in progress, but should fare better against lesser competition (which would be most of our future opponents). We just played probably either the 2nd or 3rd best team we'll face all season (with UGA and Stanford being 2nd and 3rd, in some order).

So I think we can win 9-10 games, if we continue to improve.

It is conceivable, but highly unlikely -- unless the Irish crash land to another 4-8 season (then all bets are off).

The massive overhaul to the staff was not done for a 1 year experiment (from the mouth of Jack S)-- This is also Kelly's 1st year as a CEO type coach -- I believe ND fans will see tangible improvement throughout the year -- and the recruiting will continue to yield better results.
I hope

Frankly, it's inconceivable to me that Kelly would stay through 2021. Assuming he survives this season, my guess is he coaches next season, declares he has set the foundation for the program's future success, and then retires after next year. And I think JS and Kelly have probably already discussed this and it will be done publicly in a way that allows for the timely hiring of a new head coach.
telx Unfortunately BK hired Elko 2 years too late. This is a very good hire that he needed with his best team (2014) . I look at BK's demeanor on the sideline and I see a guy that looks very calm. It's a much better sideline then in the past for him but he looks kind of defeated like he knows it's coming to an end. 8 years is long and has been very scrutinized. The program needs energy . The coaching changes were good but he is still the HC. That is why week one NBC ratings were worst ever and ND fans are selling tix. Fans expect the worst under his leadership. 20-19 loss like he said "one point" . that is the norm now.

Let's face it ND fans. We haven't been the ND guys my age grew up with (and experienced as a students in the 1970s) since '92. Holtz's final years were disappointing given his earlier success. Davie's teams were terrible -- slow, and not up to the top teams (I was calling for his head.) Ty had some early success but couldn't recruit and that turned real bad. Weis had a promising start but couldn't win late in the season AND we just got absolutely crushed by the good teams (I was at that Fiesta Bowl, ugh.)

The difference for me under Kelly (and I"ll admit, last season and the BVG debacle was a real low point) is that we went 12 and f-ing 0!!! For the first time in a long long time (1989) we were in the Championship game (and yes, we got crushed by a really good Alabama team)! Then, two years after that, after his starting QB went down in the second game Kelly still got us to 10-2 (with BVG) 1. losing in a questionable call to the team that went to the National Championship game, 2. handing Stanford the game in the last seconds (again BVG) and losing badly (but not as badly as Weis did) to Ohio State (who in my opinion was better than Clemson and could have beaten Ala that year!)

So, in my long life (actually my whole lifetime, as I remember listening to the MSt game as a kid) as an ND fan -- there have been four coaches who have delivered:

Ara (he left my sophomore year at ND) and he is a legend.
Devine (we hated him because he wouldn't start Montana, but he won us the Natty when he did)
Holtz (brought us back to relevance)

And yes, Kelly. Got us back into the conversation in 2012 and 2015 (his best coaching job.)

So despite the heartbreak and humiliation of last year and the (yet again) heartbreaking loss on the last drive to a good Georgia team this weekend, I'm not willing to throw in the towel.

I like these kids too much to flush them down the toilet. Like you guys I've been following a lot of them since their Junior year in High School. I want to see them succeed. And, I think we are going in the right direction. I'm a bit worried about the offense but hopeful that BK (who I think and I believe even his detractors would admit, knows how to coach up an offense) will fix it.

As to how many wins. I think if he doesn't win 9 in the regular season AND a bowl game he will step down. And, I believe he should. He'd get another job in a split second.

And we'd be back to where we started in 1992.

Couldn't agree more. BVG was his worst decision as an ND coach.

NDCap, could not agree more about 2014. The BVG hire was terrible, and he doubled down twice. I don't like the placid calm Kelly on the sidelines. I didn't like the red face out of control Kelly either. I personally like a high energy presence by the head coach, but one who enthusiastically congrats his players when they make big plays, and one who is not above chewing ass when players make stupid plays. He has altered his sideline demeanor several times now, and he looks uncertain with this latest edition.
