This topic has been beat to death but it's been a few days to reflect on.

I know we think certain receivers should be playing or getting a chance and certain should be sitting. Maybe actually they are getting that chance in practice and not doing the things they should. We run a lot of wide receiver screens for example. Maybe at practice those that are not playing can't hold the point of contact or missing the blocks. Maybe they are not running the correct routes.

Maybe certain backs are missing blitz pick up or lb's missing the correct gap.

We seen what happened when ES got ejected. Our safety ran a very bad angle and was out of position on a 4th down. Run the correct angle and maybe not a touchdown and our ball back.

These are young men playing their asses off and hearts out to do what they do. Calling them out does nothing at all.

I would rather have someone on the field that misses 5%-10% of their assignment than one that misses 20%-30%. I had a coach that would tell us "You have 10 other guys depending on you to do your job. If you miss it, it can cost us a touch down. Do your job."

Unless we are at practice everyday I believe after the Temple game that the coaches are putting the best players out that is doing their job.

And I have no problem with MF and MR at the safety positions this week starting.

I thought going into the year we would be 10-2. Losing to SC and one we should not but hey, we are in great position for the playoff.

Enjoy the last 4 games and reflect to where we are with the injuries we have had. Who'd thunk we would be here if you said this at the beginning of the year.

Your thread is way too positive --it won't get much play in the cesspool of naysayers .

This board is a farce -- and that's on a good day

nd8--nice post!

ND will need to improve in these areas to make PLAYOFFS--IMO:

Play 4 quarters of solid defense...esp. from the DB's & Schmidt.
Score TD's in the red zone.
See an improved, confident KIZER each week.
Win turnovers.

Of course they need to continue solid/exceptional play in all other areas.

BEAT pitt!!!

Wait, are you saying that we should trust our $4 million coach and his able bodied well-paid assistants to actually know who gives us the best chance to win? Well, there's a interesting out-of-the-box idea if I ever saw one.

The rushing TD at the end of the game is not so much on Baratti. Onwualu lost contain and got himself blocked out of the play. Does Shumate have a good chance of making that tackle? Sure, probably much more of a chance, but give some credit to their back. He made a nice cut and really played his guts out on Saturday. I'd actually like to see Jaylon back there on a play like that. They weren't getting the TD up the gut, you knew it was going outside or a pass. He's the one guy I think makes that play more times than not.

AND THIS! I love it, some actual common sense added to the board.

This is only hindsight. You have no idea if they would have scored on fourth and only one yard. Your players are supposed to align the way they are told to and execute their assignment. You can't just say that you would have liked to see him back there. What if they did the same thing to the other side of the formation? You would be saying the same thing you are now.

I also don't believe it was Onwualu's fault. He was just following his keys taking him inside. Baratti was the player responsible for not allowing the play to get outside. He needed to do a better job of breaking down. If he does that, the ball carrier may get outside of him, but he should still be able to make the tackle. If the ballcarrier tried to cut inside, Schmidt, Onwualu, as well as Baratti can all converge on the tackle. He was running straight up at maximum speed and it was an easy cut for the RB.

Not disputing what you said other than $4M coach. Honestly, I thought BK made more than he does. He is the 68th highest paid coach and he has only (in my diligence) ever asked the university to give his assistants a pay raise - BK makes less than 30% of what you claim.

Onwualu got his butt blocked out of the play, he wasn't going to be there. Schmidt showed his lack of speed getting over to the play. Barrati did a terrible job breaking down, as you said, No argument there sir. My point was that they all could have done better, except Schmidt I guess, he's not going to get faster now.

But, I hate not giving another team some credit. The kid made the right read quick and made a good cut.

Its important to understand why Onwualu wasn't in position.

He was stepping inside like all of the offensive players were except for the ballcarrier and that one blocker. He actually did a good job of redirecting and forcing that one blocker to block him instead of Baratti. Schmidt was also stepping inside because that's what his keys were telling him to do. Even Jaylon Smith wouldn't have been in much of a better position than Schmidt was.

You can give credit for Temple running a sneaky play on the goal line and the RB for doing what he was supposed to do while acknowledging that Baratti misplayed that.

Yep, he miss played it for sure. Also, Schmidt is slow and was very slow getting over. Yes, Jaylon would have been in a better position.

That's erroneous. We don't have to tell anyone how much Kelly makes, and the number ND puts out there publicly is a fraction of his total package. My guess is he's in the $3.5 to $4.5 range.

Iowa,

I did he say he would be in better position. Just not by much. Athleticism isn't a cure for other players not doing what they're supposed to.

Good discussion.
