As I watch the world cup, I am trying to better understand this game. It is not easy because the announcers do a horrendous job of explaining calls and so they miss an opportunity to educate and win over new fans. But my question to any of you who do understand the women's game is about former ND players and what the path to the US National team is like.
The only player on the team from ND is Shannon Boxx. Everything I know about her is that she was a good collegiate player but did not win any major awards, etc Yet, she makes the big time team since she was brought in by the coach in 2003.
Now, I realize it is a hard team to make but any thoughts on why some of our biggest stars at ND have not made it past the under 19 or 20 team? Girls like Lauren Foulkes, Amy Warner, Elise Weber, Cindy Daws, Kerry Hanks, Melissa Henderson, Is it more than talent? Part luck, part injury free, part who you know? Just wondering.....
