Willie Taggart? He's 40-45 for his career with one 10-win season. I'd be willing to bet he was not at the top of their wish list. Not exactly a home run hire.

Good luck with that.

Agreed but we don't know how it will turn out. That's the thing all these schools think they can get whomever is the best it's just not that simple maybe Taggert was on the top of their list but I also read somewhere that Helfrich called Kelly and asked him to come back. We'll just play the wait and see game on this just like I'll do with the upcoming Irish season.

I believe it will turn out well. If you dig deeper than the overall record, he's turned things around everywhere he's been.
He also knows the west coast and his former players love him. Go read what Tony Dungy said about him.

What is to say that this will not be a "home run" hire? He did well where he was at and with what he could probably get -- now, he is going to a better situation, with an opportunity to really compete for the elite kids.

You're right; he may do well there. But, he did what he could where he was at but he also played a much lighter schedule with those players and he still had a losing record. Now he's in the big time.

I feel this is a "change just for the sake of making a change" hire. You cannot just keep changing coaches and hope what hires works out.

I feel that Kelly needs to be replaced, but it has to be done with the right guy. If ND hires somebody else and that doesn't work out, you can't keep changing coaches every 3-4 years or otherwise you run the risk of staying right where you're at. You've gained nothing.

Every hire is at least something of a gamble. Texas fans were CERTAIN Charlie Strong would succeed. Even Nick Saban can flop.

A question? When was the last time we were a perennial power? How bout those hires? Realistically ask yourself when was the last time in consecutive years you "KNEW" you were going to beat a top 10 team? I knew under Holtz we could play with anyone! We played admirably against Clemson last year.
If you were to ask me is Clemson elite? Absolutely. Having said that it's OSU, Bama then the field. That is the sad truth and really inarguable.
Dont get me wrong they are beatable, but you better bring your lunch!
There was a time that ND was mentioned in the same sentence!

I think Taggart is a good choice but a big risk since he has not been a HC at a major school and recruited in those bright lights. I didn't see too many other great choices clearly better though who wanted to go there. I think they have to continue using their power spread with speed. It is their brand now. That is what Taggart ran in USF this last year I read.

Oregon is a tough school to win at despite that they had a great decade with their unique offense. It requires a superior QB and they did not have that this year. Actually, I think Zaire might enjoy it there and Wimbush would have been the perfect Oregon QB. I expect some speed bumps unfortunately next year. They have not been able to stock the roster with the QB excellence they had with Belotti and then Kelly. They had quite a run while Chad Kelly was there as OC and then head coach of great college QBs.

Taggart is a Harbaugh disciple but oddly, his defenses have not been that good at USF.

You make a good comment -- "change just for the sake of change" -- Right now, I think that is where many ND fans are -- they want change and want it now -- does not matter who is it. Granted, Kelly F***** up this year, terribly, and over the years, some of his in-game decisions/adjustments (if that is what you want to call them) have left many people perplexed. But, outside of a few (Herman, Strong), there really are not a lot of viable candidates out there (I personally think Fleck needs another year at Western Michigan).

What do I know -- I, like many others around here, sit and type on a key board to express our anger and outrage over the situation. It is the ones making the big $$$ who get to make those decisions on who stays, goes and when that all occurs.

Everyone out here seems cautiously optimistic. He has experience in the PAC12 (Stanford) and has coached with Harbaugh. He is bright, young, and energetic. He turned around a failing program. He has had success with a high powered offense. Oregon has, over the past 10 years, been known as an offensive juggernaut. He gives us the best chance (short of Chip Kelly returning) of getting that juggernaut back. Time will tell but, at least for now, it seems like a good hire.
