One of the key variables I believe hurts ND is location. I am talking about in state recruiting or basically the lack of talent coming out of Indiana. Programs like USC, FSU, Ohio, Bama, etc.. have always landed some great recruits for no other reason than being close to their homes. The last huge recruit ND got from Indiana was Jaylon and he didn't turn out too bad. It is just another challenge for our Irish and it is a tough one to overcome. Kelly has managed to do a decent job and hopefully this all comes together, meaning more wins, and the next big time stars will want to come to ND to be a part of it. Always trying to be positive about our program even though it is hard at times lol. The last 40 years has taught true die hard Irish fans it just isn't as easy as it once was.

Anyway let's hope this season is better and these young kids step up. Most importantly let's definitely hope for an injury free year!!! Hard to tell how our defense may look coming up but not having the best players on the field never helps. Go Irish!

Let's move ND to Pensacola.

location, academic priorities, and administrators with life long wedgies are tough obstacles

No Staff, came overcome all these - and there was no staff in this country that could have done better than the Kelly staff did for this class. Kidnapping is illegal; even by NCAA stds!

I think there is enough talent in Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, etc so that the relative lack of talent in Indiana should not play any significant role in our ability to field good teams.

ND has always been located in the same place. It was in South Bend when Rockne, Leahy, Parseghian, Devine and Holtz coached NC teams. Next.

Not a one of them won a title on the current NCAA restrictions on practice time, or roster size. And most of them coached before the air conditioner was common in every home.

Make no mistake there has never been a tougher time in history for ND to win than now. But as Ohio State proved last year. The northern schools can still win big.

I think for ND it is going to take a major investment in the team to get over the 9 or 10 win hurdle. I might blow up Michigan a lot on here. But you have to give it to Harbaugh that he is throwing absolutely every idea he can at the wall to help bring success to his program. And the school administration seems to be 100% behind. That makes for a very powerful combination

Not sure what air conditioning has to do with anything. Air conditioning was pretty common nationwide during the Holtz era. And Ohio St. and Michigan, both of which supposedly got top 6 or 8 classes, are located in climes similar to South Bend.

Exactly!
Think some folks don't realize that the Bishop of Vincennes (as in Vincennes, Indiana) wanted a Catholic university located in INDIANA. Father Sorin founded Notre Dame by request of the good Bishop, who also donated the land. ND wouldn't be ND without its history and that history is part of Indiana's history.

Nice to see you living in the past... recruiting isn't the same these days, especially at ND! Other schools with high standards are also doing better which takes away players which may have landed with us like Stanford and even Duke.

Hey whatever, it was a logical point. You look at Florida and California and it is a freaking joke how many top kids are around. We occasionally land some but the fact is many stay around home so schools like USC, UCLA, FSU, etc... get a nice handful of kids without even needing to recruit hard. It is funny sometimes looking at the articles on this site, like talking about the "pipeline" from Florida when we get a 3 star kid as if that is a huge accomplishment. If turns out to be special the write up about it.

as a guy who has coached in ohio at the top level for over 20 years let me say that there is still a lot of talent in the state but it is nowhere near what it used to be numbers wise. same as in Pennsylvania.. the talent numbers down south are overwhelming. it's just the times. at one point ohio st could field a team of all ohio kids and compete for a championship. those days are long gone.
