OK so you've just fired Kelly...

I don't know, chances are good ND will hire another loser. But I've had enough, I want that a**hole$ face off our sidelines.
Yes he is real D bag... if we're gonna lose let's lose with someone else. Tired of his smug attitude and blaming his players for his incompetence while he rakes in several million per. Really want the SOB gone!!

The policies at ND will be limiting but even with those limitations ND should be a good but not great program in the mold of Stanford, MSU and Wisconsin. At present ND football is awful. It means bringing in a coach who will instill a more blue collar approach to football at ND and less of the schematic advantage philosophy. Perhaps s new HC would even consider it possible to bring the qb under center inside the 10 yrd line with a 2 TE set with 2 backs in the backfield and run off tackle . Rather than the persistently brilliant play call of running out of the shot gun formation with a spread offense and empty backfield or 1 back at the goal line. Current Coach's preference being to run his favorite outside read run option or sweep . Has worked tremendously well in the red zone over past 7 yrs.

Can't disagree with QB under center and 2 backs (especially if one is a bruiser) ... but 2 TEs? Sometimes yes ... but other times put 2 WRs on one side and one on the other to spread the defense out then smash it up the middle with one RB following the big bruiser

Fine with me! Just put the QB's ass under center and give me a lead blocker Fullback or HBACK and a big physical RB to follow that lead blocker and slam down the D s throat. It at least keeps them honest and opens up the play action to the TE. This isn't so freaking complicated. Lot of BS. Despite BK s wishes they haven't outlawed the use of Fullback in CFB

At this point you have to ride with Kelly, but he to make a splash in the DC category who has a huge reputation as a recruiter( Charlie Strong or Greg Schiano). Bring in a special teams guru, and a really good strength and conditioning guy like Ben Herbert. Strong or Schiano cause they already have built relationships with current recruits on ND's recruiting board. And they have head coaching experience in the case Brian Kelly is giving the axe mid season.

I'm not riding with Kelly. 7 yrs has been a long enough ride for me. The day after this regular season ends he needs to be fired with a successor lined up to take over asap to mitigate the recruiting carnage that this debacle of a season will bring. And the greedy $$$ lovers in the ND admin need to reject any Mary Poppins like bowl invites if they happen to come ND s way.

The last time Notre Dame won a National Championship was 28 years ago. Since that time, many top 10 recruiting classes with multiple coaches....So Notre Dame can and has landed the necessary talent level. Money? Its always been there to support the athletics and the PR. Facilities? Very good...but stuck on tradition at the expense of progress (Jumbotron, no Gameday, etc)....the Brand? One of a kind.

So whats the problem? The wrong head coach.

Petersen would have to get major major concessions (that ND would not even grant Meyer) in order to even get a discussion going. I do not believe ND can entice an established 'name'who is a winner already.
ND needs to take a run at finding an up coming star - tomorrow's Petersen or Meyer!

I say you throw 15 mill per year at Meyer. See what happens. If he comes great! If he doesn't than you know ND has a bigger problem than coaching and we need to go to the Ivy League.

$15M/year? For a football coach? This is a sport that is ancillary to the University. I'd rather have a mediocre team and a top flight academic institution. That money would be better spent further upgrading the educational facilities.

I think it's about more than money with already rich coaches like Urban/Saban. If you listen to his wife Shelley, he's driven to win every game and championship possible. I'm sure Saban (and a handful of others) are the same. Urban's 51 and probably thinks he can win 3 to 4 more NCs before he's done, especially at a football machine like OSU. Winning the BIG will almost guarantee a spot in the playoffs and that's where he shines - big games. I truly believe he puts his legacy/place in CF history above money. The talent he has in place at OSU is off the charts and will be upgraded even more when his sick/record breaking 2017 class arrives on campus (and 2018 is shaping up to be just as good)

But. if ND does get an interview with Urban, the first question he's probably going to throw at your administration is: do you have plans to join a conference ???? In fact, you can add any top name/championship driven coach to that list. The ONLY way ND gets the nod over a P5 conference champion is by going undefeated and even that isn't a 100% guarantee. The other possibility if if the CF Playoffs expands to 8 teams but again, with the ND/greed perception running rampant throughout the country especially throughout P5 member schools, well good luck with that too. IMHO, it just isn't going to happen - especially with the current format of 4 playoff teams.

Why do people keep spouting this nonsense? It is more than conceivable that multiple power five conference champions will have two or more losses. Why would the selection committee take a 10-3 conference champ over an 11-1 ND team, particularly where ND has a better SOS?

If you path requires you to have two less wins than your competition, as your posts suggests, it is a much harder course. Even by your thoughts you need two fewer losses with a great SOS. Don't you see that as being much harder?

I was making an illustration, not saying that was the only way a one loss ND team could make the playoff. The prior poster said that the only way an ND team could make the playoff is of ND goes 12-0. I merely provided an example showing that he is wrong.

I disagree with the premise completely that ND won't make it over a conference school. One thing I know about CFB is that they love money above all else. ND fans travel better than most and as the NBC contract proves, they can generate ratings on their own.

As I like to say, follow the money

Nonsense ? Look at the other side of it too. Maybe there are a couple of conferences with 2 loss champions. It hasn't happened yet but yes, I'll give that to you. Let's just say last year Oklahoma had 2 losses and won the Big 12 along with 2-loss Stanford which did win the PAC12. And let's use your example; ND lost just once. So by your standards, ND should have been selected over both of those 2-loss conference champions ? Even over 1-loss Ohio State and 1-loss Iowa who lost their only game in the BIG conference championship game to MSU. Many people were wanting OSU in the playoffs just based on the talent they had and how they DESTROYED Harbaugh and Michigan. You can bet Saban/Alabama was jumping for joy when MSU got in instead of OSU (and the results proved it). Couldn't do it though as OSU just flat blew it against CONFERENCE member MSU. A 1-loss OSU was not selected because it didn't win its conference. As a Buckeye, I have no gripes but would have if a 1-loss ND would have been selected over the Buckeyes. Do I have to bring up the results of last year's Fiesta Bowl ?

Or we can look at 2014 when both 1-loss TCU and Baylor were left out in favor of eventual champ OSU. Let's just say ND had only one loss that year too. Do you really think ND would have been considered with those 3 teams ? Keep in mind, most of that committee is made up of P5 members school officials whose schools get a chunk of the massive NC Playoff payout. And you're saying that on a somewhat close/even record, they should vote ND in the playoffs over somewhat even (record wise) P5 teams when they know that ND gets to keep that massive payout for themselves if they win it all? This is your described "spouting nonsense" ? Who's really delusional here ? ND has to TOTALLY separate itself from other qualified P5 members and even then it will be interesting to see the committee voting results.

And if Kelly leaves or is fired, don't think coaches - especially the top/NC level ones don't realize this issue also. Good luck, but I don't think good luck can even help here

Based on this post and all of your previous post... you don't know what you are talking about.

Yeah, says the guy who suggested ND go after David Shaw not knowing that Shaw is a Stanford alum. And then suggested Shaw could be bought off. Nice try, though.

I knew he was alum, I'm just not naive enough to believe that trumps everything else. You clearly have very little real world experience. Using your pathetic logic Saban would be coaching Kent St and Meyer at Cincy o_O

Very little real world experience? That's hilarious coming from an imbecile who thinks anyone could be bought off by the highest bidder. What universe do you live in? No, it was obvious to any objective observer that you did not know he went to Stanford. And to compare the head coaching job at Stanford with those at Cincinnati and Kent State not only is an obviously absurd argument, but further proves how clueless you are about college football. As I said before, nice try though. Maybe you should go back to college and take a logic class. Perhaps you'd look like less of a fool.

What? 0-78 and you think you are well advised coming over here and telling us what we should do about our program? No kidding.

They are winning 8 and 9 games at schools that used to win 3 or 4 games. These guys are at schools that cannot recruit nearly as well as ND.

A really good coach could win 10 or 11 games every year at ND. I still don't think ND will ever win a NC given our restrictions but they can certainly win 10 games most years
What restrictions? ND's ability to hire below average coaching staffs? It can't be getting on the field talent - you keep signing top 5-10 recruiting classes every year.

Its more than just rankings, rankings don't tell nearly the the entire picture. ND can offer far fewer players than a place like O$U. As an example let's just say there are 20 "plan A" DE recruits this year. O$U can offer all of them, ND may be able to offer only 10 of them. If you want to take 2 this year O$U has to have a success rate of 10% to get their plan 'A' DE. If ND has a similar 10% success rate they get 1 plan 'A' DE and then they'll have to get 1 plan 'B' DE.

Also, once the kids get to O$U and ND the O$U kids are spending 40 hrs per week on football related activities and ND kids are spending 40 hrs per week on school related activities.

Your first point would show up in the ranking if true. Each school has a 25 limit with carryover from used rides the year before for EE's. If ND was only ably to get half the top athletes compared to other schools they would not be in the top 10 in rankings they would be in the bottom 25.
Also the NCAA has limits on the amount of hours that may be spent on football. Every schools uses the max, including ND. Now you can argue that ND athletes because of the rigorous academics have less time for voluntary work like unsupervised weight or that they are more tired because of it, but everyone has the same times limits.

I wonder if Mark Dantonio would be the right man to turn this ship around. He builds his team with lower ranked recruits but they play hard as nails. Our trench guys are soft on both sides of the ball, MSU has always played us hard. Their line has always pushed the Irish around. I always liked how he carries himself, very stoic, no temper tantrums, a father figure for the players. Since we are throwing names out there why not Mark Dantonio.

My first point was that ranking don't take into account your recruiting by position. For example if you recruit 3, 5 star WR and 2 3 star DE, you'll have a good ranking but you'll be lacking at the DE position.

Second, I believe the NCAA regulates how many hours players can spend with coaches but they can workout and watch film without coaches all they want. Also, you can't tell me you believe that most of these football factories even abide by that do you? I have no doubt in my mind at many schools they don't follow that rule in the slightest. The NCAA has proven time and again the rules don't apply to the big schools.

beach and I discussed the level of recruiting you generally need to 'get in the mix'; but it was always with the idea recruiting would be balanced. And when recruiting is skewed either on offense or defense, jmo, that notion falls apart.

Which I agree with. For whatever reason there are certain positions that, year in and year out, seem very thin on great players that can qualify for ND. DL and S have for decades seemed very thin on elite players that can get into ND.

all you need to look at are the perennial BCS and top 8 teams....they share a superior commitment to total defense. That is, they field a defense that has depth, skill at every position and they play with discipline and aggressive schemes. Notre Dame lacks the depth, the skill at every position on defense and generally plays off the ball. We rank at the bottom in sacks for a reason. The arm tackling is a dead giveaway....and the defensive front consists of an inordinate number of O Line converts.
