It's so obvious what the media is pushing with these rankings. 8 of the top 10 are SEC, BIG or soon to be BIG schools. The two outliers are Clemson and FSU, both of which are planning to bolt the ACC as soon as they get a chance. The bias is real and it's only going to get worse.

Rankings increase hype and discussion about the sport. The only real usefulness they have is bias towards certain teams, which matters come selection time. However preseason rankings are pretty accurate and take into account returning production, so ranking OSU 3rd or around there isn't far fetched. It's not like we're overhauling the team, we lost a QB and 3 OL off a unit that was easily a top 3 team in the country last season, and bring back like 9 of 11 starters on defense + a bunch of depth.
There is zero reason to have a top 25 before the season starts.

It’s a highly subjective sport, from refereeing ( there’s a penalty on every play), to voting on individual awards, to polls. At least there’s a playoff now instead of some bullshit / biased poll determining a NC. From recruiting websites to other media outlets the name of the game is to attract eyeballs which translates to more advertising dollars and more subscriber dough. We now have preseason/ mid season/ post season AA teams and 95% come from name schools with massive followings. Preseason polls attract discussion/interest and that translates to more $.

LSU, FSU, Clemson Texas are too high. Texas was 8-5 last year. both TCU and KSU should be higher than they are. Utah should be higher than they are. I believe ND should be at 11 and definitely ahead of Texas and Clemson who they destroyed head to head with Drew Pyne at QB.
Texas A&M and OU in the top 25 is laughable. They were 5-7 and 6-7. Name me a time where Notre Dame finished 5-7 or 6-6 and were ranked in the top 25 the following year?

I guess that’s the point, it’s all a guessing game and these pre season polls do mean a ton.. it’s why a 2 loss Alabama team is still considered for the playoff whereas if they started at 20, no chance. Hell these top preseason top 5 teams could lose 3 games and remain the top 10. You asking who they would put in with no clue proves their point, there is bias and no idea as we haven’t seen half the players play meaningful minutes yet. And the preseason rankings all but guarantee a spot in the top 20 for the chosen ones barring a disastrous season.
