Since 2004, Notre Dame is 1-10 against the spread and 4-7 straight in the game the week following Notre Dame vs Navy. I assume dealing with the cut blocks is one reason. Are there others?
Look at the History:
2004: BC
Result: Loss. I remember this game well. ND absolutely collapsed. I think we were up 20-7 or something like that and they came roaring back in the 2nd half and scored the winning TD with under a minute to play. The team never recovered after that (I believe they were 6-2 going in) and that was the end of the Ty Era. This loss though wasn't as costly as two years before.
2005 Syracuse
Win. This was Weis' first year and this game if I recall was towards the end of the season,. Charlie had a chip on his shoulder after the SC game. We were in the national championship conversation despite a close loss to MSU in OT and then lost that heartbreaker to Southern Cal. We needed to finish strong to earn a BCS birth.
2006: UNC
Win. Again, Charlie and Co. had a rough start with a blowout loss to Michigan and we were rolling into the middle of the year. We also had the close call with UCLA. But this was a good win for us.
2007: Air Force
Loss. This was a disaster of a season. We were just never together and very green from the start and it showed.
2008: Cuse
Loss. This was my freshman year. I remember this game well. The coldest game I've ever been to. This team was looking to rebound from a tough 2007 campaign. We started out with a rough game but a win vs. San Diego State, beat Michigan in a monsoon and following a blowout to MSU, we had a up and down season. I think the weather plus the psyche of the team got to us.
2009: Pitt
Loss. Charlie had a feeling he was on his way out. The writing was on the wall. I had conversations with two football players who said the team basically gave up after the heartbreaking loss to USC. This was a tough season to watch.
2010: Tulsa
Loss. How can I forget this game? So, I was at Giants Stadium the week before. We were on Fall Break. My brother is in the military and I surprised him with two tickets for his birthday to the Navy game. We sat on the 50 yard line first row. Sat next to an Ensign and a Brigadier General. We were outmatched and Diaco was completely overwhelmed by the triple option. We didnt stand a chance. Coming back to campus from fall break, it was very windy. We had tornado warnings all week. The Declan Sullivan tragedy happened that week. I remember that day well. I was on my way down to the stadium parking lot where the band normally practiced. When I got down there, I got a text saying we were in Loftus. I started walking back to the Gug when I saw a whole bunch of players running to a part of the field. Only later when I heard about what happened did I put two and two together. This was a very emotional game and the whole school was just not ready to play it. And the ultimate sign of disrespect was at the end of the game while we were playing Notre Dame our Mother, their band played the fight song. Not cool.
2011: Wake Forest
We won this game but barely. This was another season that started very bad with the USF loss. The stadium was evacuated twice. We also went up to Michigan the week after and lost in the last minute. Gary Gray could not defend anything. We could not recover from this all year. Although we did end up winning at Wake, my roommate, also in the band, and I were very worried about this game and we were nervous the whole game.
2012: Purdue
For the first time in a long time, we opened with Navy in Dublin. We killed them. Then we had the close win over Purdue and didn't look back on our way towards a very special season. I wish I failed a class and came back for only one semester longer. This was a very very special season.
2013: Pitt
This was another weird season With EG gone, Tommy had to take over. We barely beat Navy the week before. This was a night game and I just dont think we were prepared
2014: ASU
This was another example of not being prepared. Following the FSU loss we were very fragile mentally. We had to play Navy at night at Fed Ex Field. We barely won that game (10 points I think) but it was a very ugly game. We were lucky to win. ASU being an early game out there...we were just not ready to play. You saw a similar result in LA to wrap up the year.
I hope this helps you.

Thats right we lost Tuitt. I remember that now. And yeah, Wake was close in the 1st half and yes, didnt do mych in 2ndGreat post. Might I just add a couple of things:
1. The Wake game in 2011: Yes it was tight through the first half. I think Wake crossed the 50, once in the whole second half, once Diaco and company switched to a nickel defense basically the whole rest of the game.
2. PITT in 2013: Keep in mind the defense was hurting at LB that year, and ND lost arguably their best D-linemen on a craptastic targeting call early in the game.
3. ASU in 2014: ND was only down by 3 late in this game. And Golson saw to it that ND didn't come back by throwing the ball directly to the opposing CB on the 1 yard line, instead of Robinson
The rest were pretty spot on. Especially the Tulsa game, and the 2007 season. Both were just heart ripping.
Your defensive week of practice is totally different that week, so you lose the week to week momentum building that you typically get during the season.Since 2004, Notre Dame is 1-10 against the spread and 4-7 straight in the game the week following Notre Dame vs Navy. I assume dealing with the cut blocks is one reason. Are there others?
