Will 2016 be the Year of the Irish?
Notre Dame, coming off its fourth final four appearance in the last six seasons, is ranked No. 1 in the Nike/Lacrosse Magazine NCAA Division I Men's Preseason Top 20.
Denver, which outsted the Irish 11-10 in overtime in last year's national semifinals en route to the Pioneers' first national title, is ranked second, with Duke third, Maryland fourth and Syracuse rounding out the top 5.
Notre Dame brings back arguably the top three players in the country at their positions in attackman Matt Kavanagh, midfielder Sergio Perkovic and defenseman Matt Landis. The Irish have never won an NCAA title.
Denver, though it loses 2015 NCAA tournament MVP Wesley Berg, returns many starters, including faceoff man Trevor Baptiste, Tewaaraton Award candidates Connor Cannizzaro and Zach Miller and All-American defenseman Christian Burgdorf.
The Blue Devils, after winning back-to-back titles in 2013 and 2014, were upset in the NCAA tournament first round by Ohio State. But Duke's top five scorers are back.
All five ACC teams are represented in the Nike/LM Top 20, which will be updated weekly throughout the college season. The Ivy League has four teams, led by No. 8 Yale, and the Big Ten and Big East have three each.
