ND class falls to 8th after Bowen spurn (edit/update: '23 class finishes #12)

#6 on Rivals, and Marcus Freeman out recruited Lincoln Riley, Jim Harbaugh, and Dabo Swinney.
yeah, I get the disappointment with Bowen, but I don't get all the pearl-clutching. Michigan is in their second straight playoff and they are at #18. Kelly's last 4 classes were 10, 15, 15 and 10 on 247, and 9, 22, 14 and 11 on rivals. Freeman pulled in the first top 10 class in 2022 on 247 since 2013, and will likely have one this year.

People need to relax.

It is, but I don’t see how we can do any better with player such as Bowen or Keeley. I don’t see how any person can tell some kid to not take money that’s being given to them, enormous amounts of money that everybody on this board and others would likely take in a heartbeat.

@chaseball makes a good point that Kelly knew what was coming, and that it would be impossible to compete in this environment. Frankly, Freeman and ND have done an incredible job targeting the types of players that we want and getting a class that’s this good.
Jer Love ans Braylon James were offered pretty big money and turned it down. There were others as well, Ausberry too. So you just have to find the right fits.

ND needs to publicize their NIL deals their players get. Mayer and Hamilton made a lot of money. The Ademiolas too. Hart as well

With 3 other programs who aren't finished yet biting at their heels...
It's possible NDs class slips out of the top 10 entirely by NSD in February.

ND is the only class ranked in the top 10 that doesn't have a single five-star commit as well.

Michigan is only 13th in total team talent this year in 247 composite rankings and they churned out a 33.5 sp+

Yes, but that one player is going to be a Bowen/Keely type getting offered enormous amounts of money. Edge rushers, physically gifted secondary players…it’s going to be tough.
Micah bell, Christian grey, Jer Love, Braylon james were all offered money and turned it down

Kelly knew he didn't have a quarterback, and also, he despises recruiting. He thinks LSU can recruit itself, but Freeman currently has a better class than LSU on Rivals.

If Kelly couldn't compete at ND, it was his own damn fault. He never put in the work recruiting.

Michigan is # 1 so far in the transfer portal ratings. It's a different strategy now where national signing day has to be combined with how you are filling holes through the transfer portal.

It's possible we finish the class ranked around 12th by official NSD in february. And last year we were ranked 110th+ in the transfer portal so unless something dramatic happens over the next 4-5 weeks the lack of utilization over the transfer portal is going to move ND behind even further as well.

I don't post this to celebrate another poor finish, I bring it up because NOBODY else does, and a light needs to be shed on the incompotence.

There's no excuse for a team that makes as much money as ND does to simply sit on their hands and let the rest of the college football world pass it by.

Rockne is rolling over in his grave right now.

This is our best recruiting class since 2013. We did land a good wr in the portal ans still going after a QB and DL.

One more time. Go find another school to pull for.

Anywhere in the top 15 seems OK these days with the portal. I could see a day in the not-too-distant future where some teams do nothing but the portal.

You get these kids, some injury prone, some dont turn out, some head cases, some amazing. I honestly think at some point the best teams will plan a 50/50. Recruit vs Portal. Thats the way of the future, like it or not.
I would agree except ND doesn’t play the same portal rules as other schools.

And top 15 isn't ok when only 1 team holds a national title.

We need to be able to compete for talent with the tier 1 or we have very little chance to compete in any realistic way. This has been going on for 20+ years now.

The narrative of "its ok" has got to change. There's no reason for ND to not be firmly entrenched in the top 5. None whatsoever.

Plenty of reasons

Absolutely can. We were 1 player away from a number 5 class. Definitely can be done for sure
Can’t unless you get the right fit. Even with Bowen we were not top 5. 2024 is possible because of Carr, but don’t think $5 million can’t change his mind if a TAMU goes there. I’m sure OR paid a far less talented Novosad a pretty penny. Everyone has a price regardless of how you feel about it. The wolves will come at CJ at the last hour if they lose their guy.

The teams that will win titles starting in 2-3 years will be exclusively NIL bag schools. There’s just little sense in thinking otherwise. Nobody is beating Bama if they drop bags like OR. Teams at the top will monopolize the sport by dropping bags. ND can choose to participate. If they dont, they will eventually be forced to join a non bag league or something. Or just accept the fact that it’s over. Perhaps by then the NCAA will regulate it and ND will find the courage to participate at that point.

meanwhile in colorado this is the excitement/culture

jealous of the energy at Colorado right now

Deion has been at colorado for 1 week and his youtube channel has swelled to ~200K subscribers. This is how you move the needle in 2022.

I've been following NDs youtube channel for 15 years, it has 60K subscribers, lol

With Peyton Bowen we would be 6th on the 247 composite. .33 points behind number 5 Ohio State

Lot of wolves came after Love, James,Ausberry, Bell and Gray. They all signed. All were offered money

We're going to start getting out-recruited by colorado in like 3 seasons lol

And they have a recruiting class in the 50s while we are at number 9....

There is no real logic in your argument unless you truly believe that all these HS kids are so mercenary. Some kids want to be closer to home, some farther away from home, some want a more pleasurable college experience, some more studious, etc. when it comes to making a decision. The resources on one side of any negotiable agreement does not dictate the outcome. Simply wanting something does not make it so; all kinds of mental stimuli could hit a kid during the day and change his mind.

Agree with others that you seem to have no understanding of Notre Dame as an institution beyond just having formed some liking for their football team in the past. The leaders of Notre Dame have their own goals for supporting athletic teams for both men and women and those goals may not match your goals. Your views will not sway them.

They are not 5 star players. Their value is less. ND degree is easier to sell when competing against a modest bag. $2 million is a take. I’m obsessed with ND. I go to ND like 5-10 times a year, even drive there on some sundays just to pray at the grotto. I’d give my left nut to see them win a title. But even I’d take $2 million over a ND degree.

That said, I’ll take 2 J Loves over 1 Bowen all day long.

So top 100 players who have very high value. Definitely more than a Limar....

Don't think that Love didn't turn down a pretty penny to sign here

Jagusah is higher rated than Bowen.... you dont think anyone offered him some money??

ND needs to make a living in the high 4 star league. I truly believe if they can consistently dominate that group of 5.9-6.0 top 50-150, they can beat anyone.

Jagusah doesn’t demand massive pay yet like the NFL. He should, but he doesn’t. This is where ND needs to make a living.

The transfer portal + NIL has CHANGED the game. It's only going to get more advanced with NIL & portal. ND will adjust, im just really disappointed they find themselves yet again on yet another issue lagging behind the rest of the country.

I think once these schools get a grip on what they can afford, the J Loves will get offered $2 million and the P Bowen’s will go up to $4 million. The Dante’s will go over $10 million. Things will get worse before they get better.

Yes he does. Left tackles demand massive pay in college.

Look at the kid Bama just stole and Miami bought. Left tackles have high high value in every league of football

I never heard a rumor of Jagusah getting offered a $2 million bag. Never.

I think Alabama is doing close to $200M in yearly revenue. In a business where you actually pay your labor force, the value of a business is 10 times yearly revenue ($2 billion company) I can only imagine what these college football programs on the level of Alabama, OSU, Notre Dame, etc. are making in pure profit.

THE DAY HAS COME WHERE COLLEGE PLAYERS ARE GETTING PAID. THATS JUST FACT. THATS THE PRESENT. WE ARE NOT GOING BACK. YOU CANT SWELL TO BILLIONS IN NET WORTH AND NOT SHARE THE FRUIT WITH THE ADULT HUMAN BEINGS PRODUCING THE LABOR.

ND failed big time today with lack of foresight.
