With 3 other programs who aren't finished yet biting at their heels...
It's possible NDs class slips out of the top 10 entirely by NSD in February.

ND is the only class ranked in the top 10 that doesn't have a single five-star commit as well.

Anywhere in the top 15 seems OK these days with the portal. I could see a day in the not-too-distant future where some teams do nothing but the portal.

You get these kids, some injury prone, some dont turn out, some head cases, some amazing. I honestly think at some point the best teams will plan a 50/50. Recruit vs Portal. Thats the way of the future, like it or not.

Speaking of the portal, Oregon also has several 4-star transfers coming in as well through the portal.

I think Brian Kelly saw the writing on the wall and was tired of bashing his head in dealing with the ND admins who wouldn't budge and are being left behind by modern college football.

Fans are getting upset with the recruits for "taking the money" but the real direction of their frustration should be with ND admins who are so stubborn that they are cutting off their own nose to spite their face

ND doesn't budge on transfers
ND doesn't pay top dollar for elite coaches
ND doesn't support NIL other than a modest collective

How in the world do we expect Marcus Freeman to close with 5-star talent when they are guaranteed millions elsewhere?

Something has got to budge with these dinosaurs calling the shots at ND.

Pretty

Pretty spot on assessment. Jmo.

Most of these kids will be in the portal in a year or two. Just the way it is now. Oregon is the Texas AM this year.
Um no. That's bama. Saban literally told his boosters they lost kids last year due to ATM and to get with it. They did.

Lol.

Kelly golfed during recruiting season. He left it to his assistants and Polian to administer.

The class ND had is the best one at ND in 10 years top to bottom. The biggest issue is the dl which has a boom or bust feel to it. Otherwise ND got better at every position.

when these guys get burned by a few ‘not so elite-elites’ then as time goes on sanity will prevail! but there is always the slow learner!

falls? 8th! only 7 unlimited big spenders ahead of ND! fall?
This is the early signing period, and there are still good players on the board that will go to schools ranked at or around where ND is now, which will only pull NDs class ranking down further.

Also, ND is really strict about transfers (especially competing with other programs for transfers with NIL), so other schools now get to both pay millions for talent on the recruiting trail AND shore up the weaknesses on their roster with incoming transfers, while the dinosaurs at ND curl up in the fetal position with their endless bags of money, sucking their thumbs, and crying about how college football isn't what it used to be.

He went for the money

And who cares whether it’s 8 or 4, those rankings are for amateurs….it’s the fact we lost a stud at safety. The class filled many needs and this one hurts. Let’s get on next year or get a transfer

The 2022 and 2023 ND classes back to back are an outstanding group.

Losing a really good player does suck. However, let's put this in perspective. He was not a top 3 QB. Not a top WR, not a top RB. Not a top Corner. Not a top LB. He is a Safety. ND is in pretty good shape at that position. So while it does stink, it is not as bad as people think. When Kyle Hamilton went down, did anyone really notice ? They still managed to win 11 games. 6 without him. One more thing. I wouldn't get to wrapped up into class rankings anymore. The portal has completely changed the significance of signing day rankings. Look at the year Williams committed to Oklahoma. 247 had OU ranked 10th for the 2021 class. Williams was the lone 5 star. Then he transfers to SC. So look at OU's 2021 class now. What would they be ranked without Williams ? Bottom line. ND didn't get everyone they wanted. However, the kids that did commit are pretty darn good according to those who follow this stuff. Time well tell. So I say welcome aboard class of 2023. Go Irish!!

Freeman worked harder than any coach in the country to get a top 5 class. He’s now recognizing BK knew something. You can’t do it at ND. You can do well but you can’t land top 5 classes and certainly not consistently. Top 10 maybe. Freeman will leave ND if he gets a better offer. Can’t blame him. While I don’t really want ND to change, many do. The expectations mixed with contradictory policies is a recipe for failure.

One caveat is if ND can get an elite game changing Heisman level QB, they stand a chance. If Michigan can do it ( think they will) ND can do it.

At the end of the day, I think ND ultimately benefits from not having a locker room full of bag chasers. Culture and chemistry is what makes Michigan my favorite to win it all. Tough kids playing in bowl games like Bama. We will ultimately benefit from these high 4 star kids.

Today's lesson, better to move on to Baton Rouge, then be asked to win the World Heavyweight Championship with one hand tied behind your back. IF Marcus Freeman can figure out how to be a Head Coach and do better than 8-4 every year. I would advise him to string together a couple of 11-win seasons and get out of dodge.

For ND pull a one season one hit wonder, they will need elite player development, elite coaching and an elite QB. The previous guy was giving ND the first 2 but failed to deliver the QB. Right now, the current guy is giving none of the 3.

first of all, it's pretty much the same coaching staff, except for the addition of NFL coaches Hiestand and Golden (fresh off a Super Bowl), so not sure how you can say the development or coaching are worse - if anything, they are better.

Secondly, he pulled in Minchey and CJ Carr at QB, and maybe a transfer TBD. Kelly wouldn't know what to do with an elite QB, except break their confidence. You can complain that he didn't get Moore or one of the other elite QBs, but Kelly wouldn't have even tried. He said five star kids " don't give us the time of day." Freeman was the one who tracked down Jaylen Sneed. He's the one going after players Kelly never would. Kelly never believed in Notre Dame. Freeman does. He held that class together after Kelly threw a hand grenade in the room and ran away.

According to 247, there are 21 4 star commits in this class, 14 in the top 247, and several in the top 100. It's an excellent class.

#6 on Rivals, and Marcus Freeman out recruited Lincoln Riley, Jim Harbaugh, and Dabo Swinney.

Absolutely can. We were 1 player away from a number 5 class. Definitely can be done for sure

It’s a darn good class that’s disappointing
It is, but I don’t see how we can do any better with player such as Bowen or Keeley. I don’t see how any person can tell some kid to not take money that’s being given to them, enormous amounts of money that everybody on this board and others would likely take in a heartbeat.

@chaseball makes a good point that Kelly knew what was coming, and that it would be impossible to compete in this environment. Frankly, Freeman and ND have done an incredible job targeting the types of players that we want and getting a class that’s this good.

Yes, but that one player is going to be a Bowen/Keely type getting offered enormous amounts of money. Edge rushers, physically gifted secondary players…it’s going to be tough.
