Who I'm I missing?

You cannot possibly have this list without the name Joe Kuharich popping up. Joe went 17-23 in 4 seasons, from '59 - '62. He had an 8 game losing streak and remains the only HC in Notre Dame football history to have a losing record. Many attributed his lack of success to his inability to make a smooth transition from the NFL to college.

Kelly has been a record breaking failure. Every game he coaches breaks his own records of failure.
No coach in ND history has been so long w/o a meaningful national victory. No other coach in ND history has coached 5 years without such a victory. And that is just the W/L considerations.
Kelly's worst negative impact has been as much character as coach.
Kelly finally wins one! 'Worst Hire Ever'

when was the last year ND fielded a team entirely of 'walk ons'? recruiting is getting that bad! and it ain't just the '17 class.

Oh..
Brian van gorder but that's back to see above because that's on his lap.

Brian ****ing Kelly

Faust at least didn't cupboard bare like Ty. Holtz had something to build upon

I think Ty takes the worst head coach hire.

Didn't Charlie Weis go to 2 back to back New Year's Day bowl games with what Ty left over?? Charlie's best 2 years!!!! Doesn't sound like an empty cupboard to me.

Toby, you beat me to it. For worst HC, I can't get Kuharich out of my mind. He had loads of talent, but just couldn't win with it.

Agree, Ty was the worst. He was easily the worst recruiter in ND history. I remember ND battling the likes of Temple and Wake Forest for recruits.

Faust gets too much of a bad rap because of the whole high school thing, but he finished with a winning record against some very tough schedules. Weis and Ty were far worse.

Jerry oversaw the end of Pitt relevance with the win in 1982.

Tyrone Willingham. His record is only fairly respectable due the 02 season with Davies recruits.

The stated he left ND in due to recruiting basically no OL and just bad all around recruiting can not be understated. This debate is over.

Hell, even Gerry was 3-2 against USC and beat Navy 5 times! And, he was something that neither Weis nor Willingham achieved -- he was #1 -- if only for a week!

Just don't look much further!
