Since we don’t really KNOW what transpired, this seems totally misplaced. Maybe Ludwig wanted a ten year deal. Maybe the buyout for Ludwig and his OL coach was near $4M and we balked at this on principle. Maybe Utah matched and exceeded all we were offering along with a commitment that Ludwig would get the HC position within the next year or so.

I think you're misunderstanding my point. Ludwig isn't worth $5M for one year, if we're going to pay that go get the best! If you can't get anyone better than Ludwig, yeah pay it. I just don't think ludwig is worth it, he allowed that in his contract due to the fact he didn't want to leave.

If the HC thinks he is the right guy and is proven and well respected and been an OC for 20 years (which all are true) then you open the checkbook and pay him.
