Name the coach you want

Are you still paying off the Charlie Weis contract? I would bring him back over letting Kelly finish the season

No idea, I'm not the AD. He has far more resources at his disposal to find and evaluate different coaches. He also has ways to gauge various coaches interest through back channels.

Tom Herman from Houston?

Even though kelly was just as hot of a name when ND hired him as Tom Herman is now..both of them can't beat navy..

Give it up, too easy where he is, plus, 3 million per already.

Problem is, I doubt the best guys will come here.

1. ND probably won't pay what a Texas or LSU will pay to get a guy like Tom Herman.

2. Any coach that comes here has to realize that he will always have one hand tied behind his back compared to another available job. Like it or not, there are a substantial number of drawbacks at ND compared to other schools and they've become increasingly more magnified. It takes a rare individual to be able to balance all the things asked of an ND head coach away from football, and still compete for titles on the field.

What we need to find is another Lou Holtz. Someone who really wants the challenge of getting ND another NC. That is the coach we need.

Now of course finding a coach that has that kind of attitude AND the ability to deliver....

This is what the administration has done over the past 30 years to ND Football ... where it us no longer the/a premier job. Just a disgrace!

Peterson is my first choice but doubt he would leave Washington

I'm a big fan of Fleck, but would also take Chryst from Wisconsin

like someone who understand ND's limitations in recruiting certain players and builds a team to accommodated those restrictions

It's harder now than it was for Holtz. In the late 1980's he could still land a lot of the best players in the country, as the Catholic High Schools that Notre Dame traditionally draw from, were still spitting out tons of talent, predisposed for Notre Dame. The gap has grown significantly between an Alabama, which is essentially a NFL farm team, and Notre Dame, a serious academic institution with a football team.

I'm not saying that Notre Dame can't get back to being a top 10 program. I simply think that it's much harder now than it was in the days of old. So much has changed in the college football landscape and I think if ND wants to get back to winning again, at a consistent level, they are going to have to hire someone who lives and breathes toughness. Notre Dame has a culture of being soft. They are good kids for the most part, but they lack any and all kinds of killer instinct.

I don't know who the next guy should be, but whoever it is, the staff must be comprised of dynamic recruiters, and coaches that coach, teach, scheme, live, breath, sweat and transcend toughness. Both mental and physical.

I'm telling you Pat Fitzgerald would be perfect. He seems like the guy that might be happy at NW forever. He gets better recruits right? Cause he kicked our ass.

He has to be a better coach than Kelly. All this other crap needs to take a back seat to on-the-field results.

Herman - yes, his team lost to Navy. However, he is an awesome coach that everyone will empty their pockets for.

Petersen - that would be a home run get. Some say he loves to be out west. However, it would be hard for him to turn down ND.

I think this is incredibly important, especially on offense. ND has shown that it can recruit quality receivers and tight ends and that isn't going to stop. What they need is a coach who emphasizes a powerful running game as the base of this offense and builds from there.

Any identity would be an improvement. This team lacks direction. And heart. It truly lacks heart.

Not if they aren't willing to pay him. Why would you leave Washington (Alma Mater) to come to a school where it's harder to win, if you're not going to be one of the 5 highest paid coaches in the business... Peterson would be crazy to leave Washington unless ND basically kneels to his list of needs.

Do you remember the stat from the Houston Oklahoma game? He has to travel less than 30 miles on average per recruit. At some point quality of life is an issue.

ND still draws talent, but the system isn't right.

ND can compete with any university out there in regards to offensive players. It is the defensive side of the ball where getting the players that programs like Bama, tOSU...ect get

To me this is where the problem lies IMO

Ok, so no Herman and no Petersen. Are you guys saying NO top coach will come to ND? When did Washington become a better program to coach at?
