Name the coach you want

I'm beginning to warm up to the Greg Schiano scenario......still chewing on it...but as was pointed out very well...there needs to be a prevailing defensive mind running this program. The last solid defensive group was Bob Davies....and most of them were Holtz holdovers, though Davies was a good defensive minded coach in his own right. He had no offense however.

The carryover of soft defensive play, not necessarily players, but play, and in some cases, both...goes back mostly to Weis. But this finesse business doesn't work....and thin depth makes it even tougher. Watching teams like Duke march up and down the field for 4 or 5 scores tells us what we need to know.

I don't think Brian Kelly can incorporate a defensive game into his coaching style to the extent necessary to win at the highest level. His offensive commitment simply won't allow it. I could be wrong.....but I don't think so. Notre Dame has got to buy into a defense first mentality...and that will only come from the right coach, whomever that is.

well, if those are the names, then they should open up the position to laid off Walmart workers!

if he wasnt so old, someone like david cutcliffe would be a possible choice

i like mullen, but not a D guy

can you pull Patterson out of TCU? big12 is flaky.

ugh.. I'm depressed now. I just listened to ISD powerhour and while I knew there was money involved he put it into light. The money involved to payoff Kelly and the rest of the staff would take a LOT of money.

Swarbrick made a huge mistake extending him.

yep!

This a case of JS being too too close to a direct report. Swarbrick = White
ND needs someone to oversee stupid business arrangements where millions of dollars are involved!

ND has one of the nations top business schools and some of the nations dumbest businessmen!

Dags: this is making the 2010-11 prediction look good. Things are unfolding.

Schiano was 68-67 at Rutgers, and 28-48 within conference play. He did lead the Scarlet Knights to their best season at 11-2 in 2006, but he averaged more than five losses per year following that peak.

People always talk about Holtz. Well what about Skip? He's 114-91 in his career at schools that aren't exactly major powers. He's won 9 games each of the last two years at Louisiana Tech, and is 4-3 this year.

Holtz record 3 yrs before he came to ND wasnt great either. Schiano would be a great fit at ND.

ND decided to hire one of their own to be AD............with no previous experience.

I could be wrong, it looks to me that JS has a man-crush on BK (and...........Swarbrick is not spending his own money)!

Hmmm, Jacks taste is questionable, pudge ain't the poster boy for sex appeal!i

Petersen is a west coast guy, making $3.5M a year, and has turned Washington into a team capable of winning a National Championship. It would take a lot of money to pry him away.

Our next coach is currently in Seattle, however

Big 12 votes not to expand. No 5mil$ bonus for Herman means ND might have a shot at him. I still like Schiano for half the price and a defensive presence.

Ideally, Swarbrick should walk the plank !

But I have no doubt that Fr Jenkins will continue to be overjoyed while counting up the money "donated " by the 82,000+ suckers in stands and of course the NBC tv revenues (despite what certainly must be a declining number of viewers).

Nothing of significance will change and life will move on.

You are not going to get a top level person to come here because of the restrictions the school has so you need to look for a young up and coming coach. Chris Klieman from North Dakota State is a proven winner and also proved he can win with far less talent which is something ND really needs since the school is going to tie one arm behind his back.

Who oversee's JS ? How does ND make the same mistake again ?

Completely brutal if true. For such a prestigious school they sure have some incompetent decisions being made in regards to coaches and the football program.

Ive stated this before - BK had 6 seasons under his belt - he is in his mid 50's - no coach in recent memory has lasted more than 10 or 11 years and those were Ara and Holtz - two great coaches - who we knew were great by year 3.

BK had made just enough blunders where he definitely did not fit into that category of being a great coach.

So when you factor all that in - you maybe give him a 4 year ext, Not a 6 year extension.

A simple push back to BK agent would of been - he's been here 6 years - all coaches usually burn out around year 10 - a 4 year ext is perfect.

How did JS get bamboozled by BK's agent ?

JS's blunder is gonna cause ND to put up w/ BK for another 2, 3, ... maybe 6 years of 8 or 9 win seasons.

Simple - at least IMHO, JS (it appears) has a man-crush on BK (I could be wrong, I have been wrong many, many times).

Remember - ND is Swarbrick's first AD stop - he is learning on the job - kinda like Charlie was learning how to be a head coach on the job - apparently some lessons never get learned.

Of the names people have thrown out, here's my quick thoughts:

Urban - Ha! He's sitting pretty
Saban - Ha! Ha! Ha!
Shaw - Probably won't leave
Peterson - Not leaving this soon
Chryst - Not leaving this soon
Dantonio - Might leave now that UM is resurgent.
Herman - likely repeat of Urban fiasco when he went to UF (can't afford him)
Stoops - I think he might be downtrending
Gruden/Cowher - Intriguing, but out of coaching for a long time at this point
Fleck - Intriguing, but ND is a huge step from WMU. Not ready IMHO
Schiano/Miles - Lots of baggage
Kiffen - Do those people not remember his 3 HC gigs? No way.
Chip Kelly - Intriguing, but his brash manner might be a tough fit.
McIntyre (from CU) - 1 big step this year, but has he shown enough?
Bill O'Brien - Intriguing, but the Texans are 4-2.
Niamatololo - No thanks. Recruits would leave in droves.
Strong - I like Charlie, but the UT thing isn't working out very well
Edsall/Fitzpatrick - No thanks.

I honestly don't have a guy that really excites me at this point. Who knows though.

If you made me pick from the realistic ones, I'd say Dantonio, then maybe Miles (assuming Aranda comes with him and he keeps Sanford and HH on O).

Yep. Mike Frank said that if all told it would probably cost about 30 mil to pay out BK, all the staff and then hire new staff. I hadn't thought about it but that is probably close. BK makes between 4-5 mil per season (I still laugh at those who say he makes 1.5) They are already paying out BVG plus you figure that the other coaches combined have to make at least 8 mil per that's between 12-15 mil per season. Then you add to that the 15 mil you'll need for a new staff... I don't see ND doing that.

My only hope now is that they completely neuter Kelly. The give complete control of the offense to the OC. Complete control of the defense to the DC and make Kelly recruit.

For the folks that like Greg Schiano as a hire. Actually I think he may be a good fit. He just needs a good offense coordinator and he controls the D. We may have something like mental toughness.

Here is a link to Schiano's prior record

Problem is that Rutgers or some other program will scoop him up while the loser gets another year to prove what everybody already knows at ND.

Big 12 ,a few months ago was talking about expanding past 12 teams with the possibility of adding BYU ,Houston ,some other teams from AAC . If they did add Houston ,I think Tom Herman would have stayed and would have commanded big money ( 4 million ?) . But the Big 12 decided against expansion. Gotta believe Texas or some other big time programs will offer Herman big bucks ( 4-5 million a year) . Don't think Herman wants to stay in the AAC ? But then I'm thinking that because the AAC doesn't have many top college football programs, it would be easier to get a final 4 berth staying at Houston rather than going to a school in one of the 5 power conferences where there is a lot more competition .

Don't think ND would give Herman the coaching salary that schools like Texas, LSU are willing to offer .

If they dont buy out Kelly this year they will have to next year because coaches dont turn around 3-9 programs of their own doing in their seventh season with the program. Add to that the additional cost of buying out the new dc that is needed and wont come cheap. The decommits have already started and the negative recruiting will get worse if Kelly is not fired and ND doesnt even get to a bowl game.

If ND expects to hire a big time coach, they had better expect to spend upwards of $5M+.
