Name the coach you want

Why do you think it is easier to win at Washington?

1. He can get players in at Washington that he could never get in at Notre Dame.

2. He can recruit JUCO's to fill holes.

3. In a big game week like this one against Stanford, he won't have half his team on two hours sleep because they've been up studying all week for their three mid terms this week. A lot of schools make it much easier on their student athletes and accommodate them to an extreme degree during their competition. This is especially true of football, because it only takes place in one semester.

4. He doesn't have to deal with all the distractions of being the Notre Dame football coach that take you away from the two things he cares about. Coaching football and spending time with his family. The ND Coach is like being the President of the country. You better be prepared to be paraded around everywhere.

5. He can discipline his own players at Washington. His players are not going to be subject to severe suspension at the hands of the University for things that would be minor suspensions at other schools.

6. Notre Dame is a top 3 job in terms of demand from it's head coach, but doesn't pay top money to it's head coach, let alone the kind of money that Peterson would want to get all the top assistants he may want.

7. The lack of being in a conference means that even in years that you go 11-1 at Notre Dame, you could very well miss the playoffs. ND was likely going to be the odd man out last year had they beat Stanford, because they weren't going to jump an 11-1 Oklahoma team, ranked ahead of them, who won a conference championship.

8. At Washington, there is more to play for than just the National Title. At Notre Dame, the fans are restless if you haven't delivered a title within 3-4 years, because that's all there is to play for. At Washington, even in a year where national title conversation comes to an end early in the season, the coaches can point to a conference title opportunity as motivation.

And NO pressure.

And NO pressure.

Exactly. He will deal with achievable expectations at Washington. A down year will be tolerated from time-to-time, as long as he rebounds the next. At Notre Dame, every moment, every game, every season is a struggle. Mistakes are magnified and everybody wants a coach that is tough, a gentleman, who is kind to his players, can recruit with best in the nation, graduates all of his kids, and who is a wonderful representative of the school. They are essentially looking for Clark Kent Sunday through Friday, and Superman on Saturday.

Not saying that guy doesn't exist, but it's extremely, extremely hard to find a guy that fits Notre Dame. A guy like Nick Saban would hate it at ND and the people around ND would hate Nick. He's a complete Dick to the media. He has complete control of the discipline in his program. He's probably more powerful than the school president at this point. He gets out of every non-football engagement he can and he chews both his players and coaches out every week on the sidelines... He's the best coach in the country, and at the same time, everything that Notre Dame and its fans hate.

People would put up with it if we are winning.

There is not one coach that ever passed on ND to coach at Washington. As a matter of fact, Washington got ND rejects when they hired Ty after ND fired him. Would Petersen leave Washington for ND? I really think it would be hard for him to say no to ND.
As for Herman, he will definitely not be at Houston a year from now. It will be between ND, Texas, and LSU. Texas would probably be the favorite because he already has the pipeline in Texas.

It's the chicken and egg argument... People (fans and administration) wouldn't put up with Saban's antics at Notre Dame until he won big. But he wouldn't win big because he wouldn't be afforded the opportunity to take the necessary measures to win at Notre Dame like he does at Alabama.

That's why it's a moot point, IMO... At ND you will always have one hand tied behind your back. Ask Lou Holtz. Didn't matter how much he won, he had to fight for every single in of slack he got in the rope... ND's archaic administration (love em, or hate em) ARE NOT on their coache's side.

The ND job is not on the same level as the LSU or Texas job. Both schools will pay better than ND, afford their HBC an easier path to winning than ND, and it's much easier to recruit at both schools.

For the same reason that his mentor, Urban Meyer, passed on ND (despite having history in South Bend as an assistant) so too will Tom Herman, IMO. More money and better opportunity, with an easier path elsewhere.

ND is loaded with talent. This is one of the weakest schedules Kelly has enjoyed at ND. I just don't get the one hand tied behind the back excuses. ND has the talent to go undefeated this season. ND just does not have the coach to do it. ND has just as much talent on this team that Washington has. Kelly has done a really good job of recruiting. So I do not understand the difficulties a coach would face.

It's not about what ND has and does not have. It's about how damn hard the ND coach has to work to continue to be competitive. Coaching in general is not a healthy lifestyle, but at ND it's a meat grinder. Even Lou Holtz admitted that. The ND coaching job is among the hardest in the country. There are limitations you must deal with, while dealing with the fact that the expectations are Championship, or bust, every single year. Some coaches don't want to leave a good situation, for that, especially when they will be underpaid relative to the other top jobs.

I'm telling you Pat Fitzgerald would be perfect. He seems like the guy that might be happy at NW forever. He gets better recruits right? Cause he kicked our ass.
Fitz is on record as saying he hates ND. He ain't coming here! Would it be a good fit? Possibly, but I've said this before, and I'll say it again... ND is no longer a job for which coaches line up as it used to be. IMO, ND needs to find a young, hungry coach (Fleck or Herman?) who has some experience and will grow into the job. All the perceived "big time" coaches want nothing to do with the restrictions @ ND. Kelly has recruited better than anyone since Holtz, but he's proven time & time again he and his coaches cannot develop them.

Guys like Fleck & Herman truly are "shopping from a different aisle," and they are making it work! If someone added up the star rankings of everyone on ND and compared it to the teams we've played...or the so-called "lesser" teams (W. Mich, Houston, etc.), I think one would find that ND really does have top-5 to top-8 "starred players." So again I ask, WHAT IS KELLY & STAFF DOING WITH THEM?!?!

Greg Schiano from Ohst. is perfect. ND needs a defense first prospective. Schiano has been under Urban and will get recruits attention. He also will be cheaper than Herman but still has power 5 coaching experience.

hire a coach who is a non catholic. kelly is too caught up as some type of savior. chryst is not leaving wisc, but he would be great. bland, dull, does not care about his jacket and tie combo for the 8 weekly press conferences. just a committed football guy who is not on a religious or political crusade.

I still like Kelly. To me it just seems like one of those years. Not the right mix with Senior leadership and young talent. But if he goes my pick would be Dan Mullen from MSU. Was at ND before seems to have run his course at MSU. Has won some big games, with lesser talent. Also can take credit for Tebow and Dak.
So that's my pick

Didn't know that. Is there a link to him saying that?

at this point anyone... Kelly is completely lost...we need a really tough SOB to come in and change the whole culture... no more finesse...

Herman - yes, his team lost to Navy. However, he is an awesome coach that everyone will empty their pockets for.

Petersen - that would be a home run get. Some say he loves to be out west. However, it would be hard for him to turn down ND.
Petersen is a west coast guy, making $3.5M a year, and has turned Washington into a team capable of winning a National Championship. It would take a lot of money to pry him away.

Lane Kiffin: Head Coach
Steve Sarkisian: OC
Greg Shiano: DC

Thoughts?

Wisconsin coaches and team. Really impressive.

Paul Chryst and his entire staff - Wisconsin never has recruiting classes as highly rated as NDs - they are playing just about even with UM and OSU

otherwise - Dantonio (despite MSU having a down year).

Fleck will not be hired at ND. Is going through an ugly divorce.

Fleck is re married. Yes he went through a divorce just like 50 % of all married people. What the hell does that have to do w/ anything ?

The guy is a great family man w/ a 4 or 5 kids.

Most importantly he is a great great young head coach who will be a great head coach at a big time school.
