mcl not acl on jones..

can he theoretically return for '15? How much does the idea he is coming off 2 significant injuries hamper a fast return?

I dnt know ...i heard that mcl needs surgery but can be ready in 6 to 8 weeks....not 6 months like acl

Considering the 4 major ligaments in the knee--anterior cruciate, medial cruciate, lateral cruciate, posterior cruciate--the MCL is probably the second most important to football players. In my opinion, ranking them in order of importance are ACL, MCL, PCL, LCL. Rarely will you have an LCL injury as it would have to come from a blow at just the right pressure on the inside of the knee which is incredibly uncommon and even still may not even require surgery as it isn't one of the pillars that stabilizes the knee. The PCL could get blown out with a direct hit to the front of the knee with the knee bent (a common injury in head on car collisions as the knee hits the dashboard in front of you). But there are players who have played careers without having PCL tears corrected (John Elway I believe is one of those players). The ACL is the most crucial to stability in the knee and is in the center holding femur and tibia together. The MCL is second most important on the inside of the joint holding the interior portions of the femur and tibia together. You probably see this tear most often when a player rolls up on the outside of the injured player's leg. Both are severe, but it is slightly easier to recover from an MCL and you aren't losing the overall stability of the knee like an ACL...depending on the case and severity of course. Each one is different and each person is different in the recovery process. Hopefully this is only a partial tear in the less than 50% range which would make 6-8 weeks a good possibility. I wish for JJ to have a speedy recovery

Here's a non-medically trained answer.
MCL = medial collateral ligament. (inside of the knee)
ACL = anterior collateral ligament. (outside of the knee)

Notre Dame defensive tackle Jarron Jones is out for the season, head coach Brian Kelly announced Saturday following practice.

"He has an MCL that will require surgery next week, which will put him out for the year," Kelly said. "It was a third-degree MCL that rolled up in 11-on-11 situation. Kind of a freak deal. He was standing up. A guy fell down. It’s just one of those things you can never prepare for."

Jones was on the sideline during practice Saturday. He was in street clothes and appeared to be wearing some sort of brace on his right knee.

Notre Dame tried a few variations on its first-team defensive line. Romeo Okwara, Sheldon Day, Isaac Rochell and Andrew Trumbetti worked together at times, while sophomore Daniel Cage acted as a direct replacement at other times.

"Jerry will be in there," Kelly said. "Cage will be in there. Those two guys will play the one technique. We’ll probably activate Elijah Taylor. He’ll probably go over to the three technique. He’s better suited for the three technique. Now we’ll move Jerry back to the nose."

Jones was entering his second year as a starter on the defensive line. This is the second injury Jones has suffered in the last nine months. The senior sustained a Lisfranc injury (foot) against Louisville last November that kept him out of contact drills until the start of fall camp.

Jones, a 6-foot-5½, 315-pound tackle, made 40 tackles in 11 games last fall, including 7.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. He also blocked four kicks in the last two seasons.

I don't understand how an mcl injury is keeping him out for the year. Especially considering how early this injury happened.

What a shame. Tillery will now probably start. But you have to feel for Jones. Hope he makes a full recovery.

If Jones is going to be out for 6-8 weeks for MCL ,I would think it might be to his advantage to skip this year entirely .After coming back , It would take another 3-4 games to get into game shape . Also it might take more than next year to get ready for the pros ,so because of his injury ,he can apply for a 6th year. NCAA has been known to extend eligibility of players. It could only help his draft status
Praying no more injuries to Jones

Kelly already confirmed JJ is out for the year. JJ redshirted his freshman year so he has another year ahead of him anyway. Kelly said he will take JJ on all road games to keep his head with the team and I believe to get him looking toward next year. This injury and lost season should make him a 6th year candidate, so he could have 2 yrs beyond this, but if he's healthy next year and plays as well as we all think he can I believe he will likely opt to go to the NFL in 2017 rather than come back to ND for a 6th year.

You make a good point Bumpdaddy, but we could also see a situation like the Martins. The older Martin stuck around so that he could get another year in playing on the same line as his brother. Could that happen with the Jones brothers? We will see.

JJ is way behind in his development and nowhere near NFL consideration. He will return next season and continue his development. He came to ND very raw. He also needs probably two years of physical conditioning and maturity; and he needs to demonstrate he can stay on the field.

Definitely needs 2 years if he expects to play in the NFL .
