Notre Dame defensive tackle
Jarron Jones is out for the season, head coach Brian Kelly announced Saturday following practice.
"He has an MCL that will require surgery next week, which will put him out for the year," Kelly said. "It was a third-degree MCL that rolled up in 11-on-11 situation. Kind of a freak deal. He was standing up. A guy fell down. It’s just one of those things you can never prepare for."
Jones was on the sideline during practice Saturday. He was in street clothes and appeared to be wearing some sort of brace on his right knee.
Notre Dame tried a few variations on its first-team defensive line. Romeo Okwara, Sheldon Day, Isaac Rochell and Andrew Trumbetti worked together at times, while sophomore Daniel Cage acted as a direct replacement at other times.
"Jerry will be in there," Kelly said. "Cage will be in there. Those two guys will play the one technique. We’ll probably activate Elijah Taylor. He’ll probably go over to the three technique. He’s better suited for the three technique. Now we’ll move Jerry back to the nose."
Jones was entering his second year as a starter on the defensive line. This is the second injury Jones has suffered in the last nine months. The senior sustained a Lisfranc injury (foot) against Louisville last November that kept him out of contact drills until the start of fall camp.
Jones, a 6-foot-5½, 315-pound tackle, made 40 tackles in 11 games last fall, including 7.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. He also blocked four kicks in the last two seasons.
