Notre Dame men's basketball will attempt to keep its season alive today in the second round of the ACC Tournament.
To do so, the Irish (15-17) would have to reach a four-game winning streak for the first time since the first four games of the season.
The 12th-seeded Irish defeated 13th-seeded Pittsburgh on Tuesday with the help of a late whistle. Notre Dame was the only better seed to win in the ACC's first round as No. 15 Cal beat No. 10 Virginia Tech and No. 14 Syracuse beat No. 11 Florida State.
Notre Dame will get a chance at redemption in the second round against fifth-seeded North Carolina (20-12). The Irish lost to UNC, 74-73, at home on Jan. 4 when Matt Allocco fouled Elliot Cadeau for a four-point play with 4.8 seconds left when the Irish were leading by three.
Freshman guard Ian Jackson led North Carolina with 27 points in the win at Notre Dame. He's averaging 13.3 points per game and is shooting 40.9% from 3 as the second-leading scorer for the Tar Heels. Graduate senior guard RJ Davis, an All-ACC Second Team selection, is North Carolina's leading scorer with 17.3 points per game. The Irish held Davis to eight points in January.
North Carolina has struggled with scoring defense (76.1 points allowed per game), turnovers forced per game (10.91) and 3-point percentage defense (34.6% allowed).
Markus Burton scored 23 points in 22:57 off the bench against North Carolina in January. Tae Davis scored 17 as well.
