Ludwig staying

"No one will ever know the definitive truth"

That is so true! I think the "buyout issue" is what is being portrayed in public, but my guess is there were deeper issues. You don't enter contract negotiations without knowing what the buyout is --
Yeah, I suppose.... That would make more sense, that it's something else, that it wasn't literally the buyout itself, and that ND in the end just couldn't bring themselves to do it. It's certainly being reported in the media that way, that the buyout was the sticking point. For whatever that's worth, I suppose not all that much these days....

If that is just sort of a whitewash, the buyout reason that's being publicly reported, it doesn't make ND look none too good. For some sort of white lie that's certainly not putting a positive spin on it....

Too bad. One issue is Freeman went after two guys who are probably pretty happy where they are. Ludwig's coaching a good team in his home state. Klein also has a good team at his alma mater. Both teams finished in the top 15 this past season. So neither really had a lot of incentive to leave.

So maybe Freeman should go after an up and coming guy who wants the job more, rather than somebody you have to pry away from where they are now.

We had Ludwig

It’s pretty good quality of life in SLC highly possible Ludwig and or family didn’t want to swap that for the garden spot of the Midwest. I wouldn’t live in SB if someone bought me the house but that’s me.
Doubt if he would live in South Bend, probably in Granger where most of the coaches live.

Coaches and players do feel honored to be at ND, but not pro bono.

I can’t imagine ND would be so shortsighted to not pay such a buyout if they determined he was the guy
Just read an article from Driskell where he absolutely went in on ND Administration and the “higher ups”.

I’m pretty shocked that ND is letting the buyout prevent MF from getting his guy. Shocked. I almost can’t believe it. There has to be more to the story.

How did we get this far into the interview/TA process without having the contract or buyout scenarios figured out?

There has to be more here. Any thoughts?

Nobody here knows the exact reason except for Ludwig, Freeman, JS and the fly on the wall.. maybe the Pope too...

But....

Y'all are only hoping ND would've known about the buyout...
As some of you have said...there's no way ND didn't know about the buyout.
That's just being optimistically naive!!

Let me tell ya...there most certainly is a way they didn't know about the buyout.

Allow me to introduce none other than......

George O'Leary

In other words this isn't the first time our beloved was so punch drunk and smitten about a hire that someone(s) wasn't being very thorough before hand.

Now is that what really happened? Again only the three people, Pope and fly on wall know but I refuse to automatically say there's no way ND didn't know of any large buyout.

Oh there's most definitely a way.

I think there’s a remote, albeit small chance that the fan/media pressure is getting to the ND folks and negotiations will continue with Utah. If you’re trolling on Twitter, etc. keep it up.

Is it possible the Freeman knew Ludwig was a no for Swarbrick and the publicity of the Hockey game was simply a rookie coaching error? Maybe it was a move to force Swarbricks hand?

No. The administration screwed up. They saw his old contract and thought his buyout was 450k. It was recently changed to 2.8 million. Apparently they bungled that....Ron Powlus....

MF brought in a respected guy. Had him pretty much locked up and probably the OL coach as well. Then the buyout was realized. It's a total disaster

Seriously dude.

Take your tail away from between your legs.

That’s a cover up for jack not wanting him, or at least not wanting to push to pay…. No frichan way they looked at his old contract when new one was public, no way

It was Powlus. And its being reported that it is true.

Also same guy is saying Jack didnt want Ludwig for that type of $

Nd screwed up bottom line… question is where can or do they go now …
I know what I want but no clue what they do

If I'm not mistaken Ron Powlus is the director of player personnel. Why it would be his responsibility to know the cost of a buyout of an offensive coordinator at a different school?

Hes the Senior associate Athletic Director.... you don't even know what he does. I thought you knew all intel
I don’t know all but I know his name isn’t being given as reason by reputable intel … again… non legal people aren’t reviewing or having major intel on important legal documents/contracts …. Even nd isn’t that bad… “hey Ron, what’s the buyout… $450k…. Sweet, we got that”… ain’t happening even at nd

That’s pure speculation on your part, unbelievably naive and totally uninformed.

LAWYERS …. in-house and retained read contracts NOT the personnel in the athletic department !

I'm kinda with ND on this one. Ludwig shouldn't have signed that big a buyout and then interviewed with another team. And I don't believe that he is worth that much money.

Yeah.... it is

So what. He can sign one again today and get hired at another school willing to pay his buyout

You do get that, right?

Lol
Wow you really are dense. If he was really interested in ND he would have waited on that extension. Clearly he was not.
Now I know what an idiot might say- why not sign it then leave?

Guess that answers the question to anyone with a brain and morality.

You moron

He signed that before ND was even in contact with him lol

And it was smart by him. And Utah. We're the only ones who look like fools in this situation

And he was interested, he was all but locked up. We balked after we didnt want to pay the buy out.

It's all on us. It's another embarrassment

B.S.

You don’t know what you’re talking about.

It’s not that easy, especially if there’s a personal penalty clause in the contract, which isn’t unusual.
