Kelly is a better coach than Davies, Ty and Weis no arguing that but after 6 years his biggest win is a music city bowl. Still no January bowl wins since Holtz era. Fact is Kelly does not do well vs teams with equal or better talent, combined with struggling vs inferior teams every year. Kelly is a upgrade from the previous 3 coaches but far from elite.
David Shaw, Harbaugh, Dantonio and many others do much more with much less. Those coaches are winning titles and big games while Kelly's biggest victory this year was vs Navy. With USC being down and Michigan off the schedule this was perfect timing for ND to rise to elite level, but Killy appears not to have the ability to take this step.
10 wins appears to be a good season until you look at the schedule and how it played out with Navy being the best victory.
