For him to keep his job.. He needs to win one of the next two.... (Win both!)

But more importantly he needs to make a killer hire at DC and Special Teams...

No excuses.... David Shaw has his team at 7-3 in a rebuilding year!

Helton has his team at 7-3 because he made a terrific hire at DC in Clancy Pendergast (and had the balls to bring in Darnold mid-season!)

Time will tell.

Swarbrick already said he's coming back next year. I don't know how he changes that.

Kelly just needs to get the right hire at DC. That has to be his primary focus. That, along with developing a jumbo package for short yardage situations with Luatua and/or Weishar.

You people are dreaming. What competent DC would consider coming into this mess? You beat a glorified HS team (Army) and your giddy. No way any top level coach will consider this position unless it's someone who is having trouble breaking into a DC job or someone trying to rehabilitate their career. This is a dead end resume move. Kelly is done here, it's just a matter of time that he earns his release. It is what it is. Watch recruiting, it's going to drop even lower from where it's at now. And the talent level....what are you looking at?, aside from some talented people on offense, there is little of top level players on defense. This is a bad situation that is only going to deteriorate into next year. Stop comparing this to Purdue and start comparing the program to Ohio State. Unless mediocrity is acceptable to you.

Please point out where people are "giddy" over beating Army. You're really reaching on that one.

I realize getting a top-flight DC is going to be an uphill battle at the minimum. And, you don't need all 4 and 5-star recruits to be successful on defense. Look at how Iowa shut Meatchicken down last night. You need hungry players who are put in a position to make plays.

And, last but certainly not least, no one feels that mediocrity is acceptable. Please point out where posters have said they love being where we are now.

Time has told. (you missed the memo?)

Yea, whatever. Second week in a row I didn't watch and probably won't watch again next week if it's a nice day. My apathy level is at about 80% right now. The OP had it dead on, Shaw is 7-3 in a rebuilding year we are.. well, whatever our record is and next year we will win 8-9 games. In 7 years Kelly has never once had the offense and defense playing well at the same time.

Honestly, I'm not even upset anymore as each week goes by ND football becomes less and less important to me.

Ah, a fair weather fan. Why does that not surprise me?

As long as Kelly is HC ND will not get a great DC. If Jack doesnt see that then he needs to be fired too. How many commits will stick with a lame duck coach for a other 4-8 season and no bowl game.

I think that kelly is certinly coming back next season unless he coses to leave or The aum pressure is sp strong that they force him out
I don' t know why some people are talking about bringing in a new DC ? Perhaps, I am seeing things differentlythat pther fans, but I think that Hudson is doing a very nice job so far ?

floridairish I believe he's speaking about

Defense didn't lose the Navy game, it was totally on Kizer and the offense. Kizer has totally regressed this season.
7 plus minutes in the game and Navy ran the clock out. That is bad defense. 6 ND offensive possessions for the game is bad defense.

Kelly and staff need to develop an attitude for this team -- this team (nor any of his other ones) have not play with any attitude

DUDE -- not sure what game you watched -- but, I did not see Kizer playing any defense -- where was he when Navy was picking up 3rd and longs???
Where was Kizer when we had 12 on the field on a punt, that would have given ND the ball with a chance to expand the lead -- only to give it back to Navy, 4th and 1, and they convert. Then score to take the lead. --HOW IN THE HELL WAS THAT ON KIZER?

Java, comments sound like the slow death of a ND fan. Hope you find your passion again as I enjoy your posts and appreciate your perspective, even when I disagree.

I believe both sides of the ball lost that game

Kelly took the ball out of the offense's hands on the last series -- that is on him.

Defense could not stop a HS option team (yea, don't tell me about army). Why in the hell did not Jarron Jones play? take away the dam FB, make them 2 dimensional and not 3. Again, Kelly made some bone head decisions.

just bring in at least one top coach to this coaching starved team! even if it is lamaze!

Just tell us, why would any "top coach" come here to this dead end? Would you want to come here? For one year? Just to add ND to your resume? A losing program, that disintegrated while you were there? Really?

Howard, I think the calculus for an up and coming DC would hinge on whether they believed ND has the talent, and whether they would be empowered. If the answer is yes to both, which I think will be the case, then they will earn major chops in the industry for vastly improving one of colleges worst defenses over the past three years. Even if It turned out to be a one and done scenario because of Kelly getting canned, they will benefit and have many ideal job offers. Now, I agree that a proven DC veteran star would find little reason to come.

Thanks Telx and let me say I appreciate your insights too. Well thought out and articulate and no personal attacks.. something I think more people should strive for.

I still enjoy ND football but there isn't nearly that burning passion I had. I still want them to win and I still don't like when they lose but over the last 2-3 seasons I have found myself 'flipping' stations during games. I don't really get upset at all after a loss nor am I overjoyed with wins. Maybe its part of getting older (I'm 51).

For sure, this is not necessarily part of getting older! I'm 67 and my wife still closes the door to the TV room when we play USC to tone down the hollering she hears. We're fortunate and live a great life and enjoy many forms of entertainment, but I still make sure to see every game and to schedule travel or golf or dinner parties, etc... around the games. That said, I haven't enjoyed the way ND plays the game for several years. I love the way Wisconsin plays the game and thought we might see glimpses of same from ND this year with all the talk of our talented OL and running backs, so disappointed once again. Disappointment aside, I look forward to each and every game, and find the best way for me to enjoy this season is to focus on the young guys like Love, who is killing it. So, my hope for you is that you kick your ND melancholy out the door and grab your love of ND by the neck and embrace it for all it's worth. Something I hope to enjoy the rest of my life.

You know, maybe you have hit on it. ND hasn't played entertaining football in years.

On defense there is no toughness, we have played sloppy and slow for years. We don't hit particularly hard nor do we play lock-down defense we don't create a lot of turnovers. Even in '12 when we had a dominating defense it was a bend-don't-break defense that was effective but not exciting.

On offense we don't have a power running game that lines up an punishes the other team. We don't have a fast paced offense that puts up a lot of points.

We are just, meh, in all facets of the game and we aren't winning a lot of games to compensate for the lack of entertainment on both sides of the ball. So we are winning an average number of games most years and are very boring doing so.

Thanks, maybe you have hit on the reason for may apathy.

but how do you like the fashionable Uni's? makes up for not winning, right?

Amen Telx1, I'm 59, and at times may bitch and moan with the best of them. But ND is my school, and I do and will do the same. Scheduling around the ND and cheering for my school

Java, I'm in the same boat as you. Do not really watch the games anymore - I still love ND. I'd get too upset watching BK coach these ND teams. I tried to make excuse after excuse for him, but realize he is limited as a football coach with a personality that is not all that likeable. He is "ok".

Until he finally goes on his way whether through retirement or off to a new team or being fired I am retired from really caring about ND football. Definitely not spending any $$ on tickets going to games either at home or on the road. And definitely no longer donating any $$ to the school or buying merchandise. I make no dent whatsoever - I'm not a heavy hitter like the big time donors. And the big $$ donors will need to pull the plug on their $$ before Jack White finally gets rid of BK and gives someone else a chance to truly resurrect ND football from its 25 year slumber.

They are really a glorified Ivy league team.

I tape the games and if I want to watch them I will or if I have absolutely nothing going on I will watch.

We are about the same age - so we had some pretty good well coached teams to root for back 30 / 40 years ago.

Maybe sometime down the road ND will eventually hire or find a real good coach again. Until that happens I'm not really all that interested.

To the fans who still care and watch - god bless you all and Go Irish !

I've talked to a couple of co-workers that are both subway alum Midwesterners and both summed up their ND feelings as "love the university, but the FB program doesn't seem to embrace the same core values anymore."

Basically they feel like JS and BK work too hard on image and spin instead of winning the way ND used to. Both are <40 years old. I can't argue with them at all.

well the play like a champion idea is in place, it is just that the days that ND plays as a champion are likely gone forever.
At some point consideration will have to be given to the schedule. ND will not be truly competitive with old rivals and just continuing a rivalry for tradition is really not the tradition when the competitivness is gone.

Why not talk about Army? They are a D1 college program and run the option much better than any HS team. You need to ask Jarron why he saw little action against Navy and Army. He has the answer to your question and it may surprise you. I love Lou's philosophy on playing defense against the option. Attack. Sitting back on your heels ain't going to cut it. The Irish defense also seem to have a weak spot on the perimeter against everyone. It almost seems like our "D" is psyched before the game even starts. The talent level at Navy appears to be much greater than at Army.

Pitt vs Clemson testafies to the fact that college football is an emotional game as well as physical.
If you are not prepared to play, and play at your highest level every week then you are vulnerable to upset (unless you are playing a Kelly coached ND team).

Any given Saturday.
