Joe Schmidt..??

I remember, back in the old days now I guess, when there was rule on this board about not singling out players for criticism during the season. Coaches were always fair game, but the players weren't. It was pretty well respected by board regulars, and it was one of the few that was actually enforced when it wasn't.

I don't mind change, but the continual calling out and trashing of individual players by some posters is not a positive change in my book.

Joe S. is a great guy but even all the ND beat writers think Joe S, shouldn't be on the field.
And remember when everyone was attacking Tommy Rees for his play back in the day? Noone got banned back then for that. As long as it is about the player's play on the field and not his character--- discussing poor play is alright.
It is obvious he being outmatched on the field this year. It is probably because of his injury.
I actually agree with Purse on this one.

so that concerns you and the fact that there is an overt attempt to crush this forum, to eliminate any open discussions of any implication towards the team operation or structure or staff, this has not upset you?

The board rules are that we can discuss performance. We cannot ask the Mods how far that can go because they are MIA!
The staff is fair game for discussion that is not personal or derogatory. That there are 'messengers' here (who under a Moderated forum were repeatedly banned) to do exactly that and then they cry "foul" is fine with you? Do you comprehend these shananagans? Do You really think this is just any fan posting? Good grief, are you that naive? THINK! If you dare to offer opinion that is not acceptable you will ge called some vulgar label; the goal: not only trying to control the sideline but for a time trying to control this forum; dammit man: think!

You guys risk losing your forum!

Yeah, it bothers me more when people start singling out individual players for criticism. Sure, we have a bunch of anonymous posters want to wallow around in the mud like pigs and fight like a bunch of spoiled children. Although I wish it wasn't like that, posters can generally stick up for themselves (and their opinions) or choose to stay out of the mud. But the players don't have a choice or a voice in responding to the criticisms launched against them on this board. I can't find the present rules and I'm even sure there are any anymore. In the old days (before the regular bashing of Tommy Rees Bodi) I don't remember threads directed at "evaluating" the specific performance of individual players lasting long. Nobody got banned, but the threads disappeared and Wax gently reminded us to keep our player critiques generalized, party out of a concern that players' families and some recruits visit the board from time to time.

Of course that was a time when people were more fond of Notre Dame than the self-proclaimed genius of their own opinions, which more and more seem to evolve in specific ego driven agendas. The OP of this thread has pushed his "Jaylon can't play inside" agenda since Fall camp. And that's cool, he's entitled to his opinion. Along the way he's made comments about Nyles Morgan being "the worst at his position since the early '80's", Farley is his "horrible self" and now he invites criticisms of Schmidt's play - just so that once again he can tell us he knows more about football than the rest of us.

Each of the players currently on the roster contribute more to the program on any given day than the resident board experts will in a lifetime. I don't think they deserve to to be the whipping post for ego driven agendas.

Actually, I was referring to further back in the day in a season where we truly sucked. Posters didn't get banned, the threads just disappeared. Personally, I never cared for the nastiness directed specifically at Rees either.

It is what it is. We have a board full of people that feel slighted whenever anyone challenges their grand analysis of something. One of the reasons I enjoy you and some others is that you tend take things on the board lightly.

Stop! The OP..me...created thread because Joe Schmidt was getting his ears burned off every other day on here. Most criticism was by folk who have no idea how to properly play inside linebacker. While Joe not the next Olympic athlete for sure plays his position better than most here see.
As far as others, what part of complimenting Morgan and Jaylon along with critique did you not get.
There is only one player I really have not one positive to say about and that is Farley. Possibly I could find something nice to say about him if he wasn't running his mouth constantly to the opponents he is playing...all while never backing any of it up.

So I'm not sure who's stuff you think you read but I hand out positives right along with negatives. The good and the bad. It's called being objective.
Apologies if that bothers you.

Just my take, but you didn't seem very interested in defending Schmidt after you opined - once again - that Smith isn't physical enough to play inside (despite praising all his amazing talents). When you were challenged a bit, in a pretty thoughtful fashion, you just didn't have time to go into any more detail other than the single UMASS play. Fair enough, I guess. But with your football acumen, I would have expected a better a better defense of Schmidt than to trash Jaylon's inside play and Farley's back-end play and then move on. Especially since you invited the discussion.

In my opinion a big part of the mystery of why Schmidt and Smith are starting inside is revealed by the 2011-2013 recruiting classes.

2011 - Grace (ILB -career completely stunted by injuries)
2012 - ZERO linebackers; Big Giant Goose Egg
2013 - Smith (All World OLB recruit),
- Deeb (ILB but done - medical)
- Randolph (OLB; Moved to DE)

I don't find it mysterious at all. It doesn't even take a lot of fancy football analysis. We're very fortunate to have Schmidt.

Maybe we need a linebacker coach that didn't play OLB at Michigan.

if I was Carlo, I would be pissed at the comparison! Carlo was a brawler.

Joe tries with all he is and all he has; it is more a matter of physical limitations and talent.
He has the world of "want to"!
he was a brawler. he just couldn't play the position very well. a liability in coverage and slow to the ball. unfortunately for nd he was the best they had at the time. no lack of effort, just limited skill set.
