Joe Alt

The most polished lineman I've ever seen at ND at this early stage of a career. Better right now than McGlinchey was as a senior. Ridiculously good. No wonder Harry gushes about him to people. Barring injury a top 5 pick in the 2024 draft.
I thought mcglinchey struggled vs the top opponents and dominated lesser opponents. Hopefully alt shows how good he is tonight. Mcglinchey whiffing vs Georgia last drive was brutal. He whiffs in the nfl a lot still too. He’s starting in the nfl still and that’s awesome but he’s rated one of the worst olinemen starting

Alt seems so calm, almost like he has another level he can get to keeping his calmness but adding more strength power and dominance

Totally agree. A blocking TE in high school playing at this level at left tackle this early is incredible. Thought we’d be talking about Fisher with these superlatives instead, but his lost year to injury opened the door for Alt. As for Fisher, thought he started the year poorly, but seems to have improved almost weekly since. He’s playing at a pretty high level as well for just his first real season. We’ll have possibly the best tackle combination in the country next year, but can’t shake the thought of Fisher playing guard next to Alt, and the running lanes they could open. Tonight will be a great test for both.

mcglinchey’s run blocking is among the best in the NFL, and his pass blocking among the worst. Traits he showed at ND.

Great pedigree for sure.

Agreed. I thought Fisher played like he was on skates the first 4 or 5 games. Much better the last couple of games.

I ve been calling for Fisher to left guard for some time. He'll be an inside player at the next level.
Zach Martin was the most polished OL I've seen at Notre Dame
Not nearly as polished at the same stage.

The unfortunate thing is the last 3 guys on that list have got zero experience this year
We haven’t comfortably beat anyone this year really …. That’s the issue not getting them in

He is terrific in many ways

recall the reactions of some on this board when he committed? Lol

He was heavily underrated as a prospect because of the competition he faced. While I do see that as a concern for most players, he has too much pedigree, raw physical presence, and highly positive intangibles to be anything but a top recruit.

I don't think that would be the reason. He's from Minneapolis. It's a big city, that frequently produces highly-rated players that scouts and coaches know about and then go on to rate highly.

I thought it was because he was a TE, and played TE, and so he was one of those genuine projects, someone who's going to switch positions. That and he kept growing, and is now like 6-7, and he was only 6-5 as a junior. And he was still a three-star prospect, he wasn't a complete unknown....

For sure. And the board savants excoriated Quinn for this “3 star”..

In one of our recent games, the announcers discussed his playing TE in HS. They said his Dad told him to go ahead and have fun and play TE in HS, because he'd be a lineman in his future career. But after practice, he'd come home and practice OL blocking with his Dad in the backyard. And that was a pretty good guy to learn from.

ND had absolutely NO CLUE he would be close to this good, no one did. They took a flyer on a player that didn't look great his JR year. he was 6'4 maybe 240lbs. No one could have known he would be 6'8 320 in 3 years.

Staff gets credit absolutely for his development, but this was a complete project plan that got sped up and turned into absolute elite size. That's why he started the season last year as fourth on the depth chart at left tackle.

This is not entirely accurate. ND was Late to offer. They offered in May and two months later he committed. He was already 6’7 when they offered, albeit a lanky 255-270 depending on which publication you read. He was a blocking TE in high school, and ND recruited him as a tackle, and most analyst thought he had a very high upside dependent upon gaining weight and strength. There were more than one recruiting analyst projecting he would be the best player in that class when all was said and done, Fisher notwithstanding. His weight gain and strength gain under Balis were incredible. That said, he did start off as fourth on the depth chart, but not sure this was a reflection of his play at practice, or Quinn’s abilities to evaluate. News out of practice repeatedly spoke of his dominating outstanding play. But, possibly the best OT in college ball as a Sophomore, no one except maybe his dad saw this coming.

I read when nd started looking/recruiting he was 6’4 235, they didn’t offer until he started growing but he was still ver thin. His jr year in football he was listed at 235 I believe

yes a few people were high on him but it was mostly phrases like “by his sr year in college”. He probably won’t see a sr year at nd

Quinn recruited him right so you can’t really blame his talent Eval for him starting fourth string. I’ll stand by his film was not overly impressive. I tend to not make too many early comments in oline unless they’re can’t miss stud like Blake or guaranteed dud like some in the past. Oline is hard to project at times and why you need such numbers, and I’m far from an expert at oline projections.

Vs everyone saw potential day 1 starter and future AA in Blake

Really, Jeff Quinn was all set to sabotage this kid's career? Of course he was.

You guys never 'effin stop. At least now you're merely suggesting it was possible, and hinting at Quinn's possible incompetence. In the past you would have just made up a a lie about him, or some little conspiracy theory, and the kid's dad finally called ND demanding that his son play or he might transfer, after a long two hour conversation with Swarbrick or something....

Was his dad not an NFL lineman? DNA usually wins out and I remember many writers and former writers on this board loved him right away.

Joe Alt is very similar to Benjamin Morrison in that while they weren't ranked highly, their offer lists tell the story.

How many fathers and sons have both had success in the nfl? …..
Not a high % despite how many children nfl players have

pedigree is not everything; I have seen a number of second and even third generation players that were JAGs.

Alt really impressed me against Clemson; He handled a top pro prospect pretty well if not 100%.

I imagine there will be pressure; probably a LOT of pressure on him to turn Pro; I hope he resists. As good as he is now, there is still a lot of room to improve. The three best schools for OL in my opinion are ND, Wisconsin and Iowa, who is unmatched at talking low rated high school prospects and developing them into solid pros;
Wisconsin gets better prospects and polishes them real well. ND takes more of the best prospects and gets them ready for the pros.

Joe Alt can’t turn professional until 2024.

We have one more season of Alt and Fisher- 2023. Enjoy it. Need to capitalize on it, and have 2 awesome guards emerge next season. I hope Billy S is one of them…..
