Will be eligible to coach next year. To compete with the pedigree of Harbaugh and Meyer, Notre Dame needs to land a big name. Crazy?

As far as big names are concerned:

Jim Tressel
Chris Petersen
Les Myles
Chip Kelly

I think Petersen could be to ND, what Harbaugh and Meyer are to UM and OSU. That would be a fun Midwest triangle!

Bob Diaco is not a big name, but I think he's a large part of the reason 2012 was such a success.

Promote Sanford- yes I know zero head coaching experience. Worked out good for Shaw at Stanford.

Herman from Houston- Looked bad losing to Navy today. However, he is still my top choice.

Chip Kelly- Interesting for sure. He is a better fit in college. Maybe?

Chris Peterson is and would be awesome at ND.

No way for Les miles.

Chris Petersen might be tough to get, but he could be ND's Urban Meyer/Jim Harbaugh. What a challenge to compete in the Midwest against those two. The greatest champions don't avoid challenge, they embrace it. Can you imagine Harbaugh, Meyer and Petersen in that small corner of the Midwest. Talk about fun.

In replacing a failing coach/program - hiring a head coach with zero previous head-coaching experience is VERY risky - ND is no place for on the job training for a head coach (it's more for a MAC level program).

I agree unless he is an extraordinary leader

Notre Dame will not hire a coach who was involved in an off-the-field scandal that's for sure which means Tressel and Chip Kelly have zero shot of coming to South Bend as head coaches.

Peterson got a contract extension through 2020 making $4 million a year so I don't see him leaving Washington. Peterson cares about "fit" which is why he choose Washington and passed on several bigger jobs like Southern Cal. He wanted to go to a place where the pressure of the job wasn't overbearing. Notre Dame isn't the place where you can coast through just winning 8 games ... See Brian Kelly. He has won at least 8 games in every season at ND and we won't him out after one awful year. How many coaches are going to leave cushy jobs to come into this?

Les Miles could be our best bet, but not sure how much better he will be than Kelly. There's a lot of BS he'll have to deal with at ND that he didn't have to do at LSU so who really knows. One thing is for sure it is hard to coach at ND.

I say bring in Les Miles or just keep Brian Kelly. I'm not impressed with anyone else that I truly believe ND could reel in.

Les Miles is not ND material,Chip Kelly might like the pros to much to come back to college. Tressel is an interesting thought.

None of the four will ever at coach at and.

well, jmo

you guys doubting Sanford may be in for a surprise- an your rational for not considering him is fubar.

Look at the two people who liked this response. What a joke. Brian Kelly is responsible for the death of Declan Sullivan. But nope, can't hire Tressel.

Be that guy that thinks ND will go after the likes of a Tressel, Briles or Chip Kelly. This is an administration that told Kelly to tone down his temper on the sidelines because it wasn't very nice. Whenever the next coach is hired if it is someone who has been involved with an off the field scandal than tell us what a bunch of dipshits we are. ND has never hired a coach that has been accused publicly of being in a scandal and I personally don't see them changing their stance on that.

. Unfortuante death due to poor judgement on a lot of people's parts including Declan himself for going up there in the first place if he didn't feel safe. Nobody could've predicted that would've happened.

If you want to think this was a planned out killing and that Kelly is a murderer that's on you.

Tressel did not lie to the Feds. He lied to the NCAA claiming he did it to protect his players from the tatoo parlor owner who was being investigated by the Feds. OSU forced him to resign because he lied to the NCAA. I don't think Youngstown State would have hired Tressel as its President with him having any criminal record.

He would be a homerun hire for ND, and as a Buckeye fan I have to say a major thorn to OSU in recruiting Ohio. So please don't hire him :)

It was to the NCAA but it was also a statement under oath.

53+ mph winds and that wasn't in their heads that that could happen? Common sense not big with you? Tressel wouldn't allow his video crew up on permanent lifts the day before to be safe. It's called Tressel had brains and Kelly did not. I lived two hours away from SB that day. The wind was unreal. And to have Jack Swarbrick get on tv telling the viewing public that it was a normal day that day. "Nothing out of the ordinary."

Again, what a joke.

Ruhle is not a good coach. He's an immature little weasel-man. Sanford is coaching at ND and how is that going for us? I don't get the "promote" Sannford people. He's never been a head coach and has absolutely nothing going for him in the direction of leading a major program. Perhaps he will get a shot like Diaco and Cuck Martin to try being a head guy somewhere small.

If we move on from BK, a big name is needed to balance Harbaugh and Meyer or we will be swallowed and flushed out of importance as a national or even Midwest power. Something needs to happen soon as the Meyer and Harbaugh era is well under way and ND is drowning.

IMO, you are on the right track with Tressel, Myles and Chip... former CFB coaches who were very, very successful. Look at some to best coaches today;

Harbaugh - Very good CFB coach that was run out of the NFL.
Saben - Very good CFB coach who was run out of NFL.
Meyer - Very successful CFB coach that ran into issues the last few years at UF.

Would ND take a coach fresh off a five year show cause?

No.

I thought JT's penalty started if/when he got another coaching job, effectively banning him from HC duty for 5 years because he basically could only be an assistant under the terms of the penalty. I could be wrong though.

That's a credibility killer right there.

In order to compete with Ohio State and Michigan we need to have a big name coach if we go and get rid of Brian Kelly. We are not going to survive in the Midwest with two powerhouse coaches by hiring a coach that has barely a name for himself. A bigger name then Brian Kelly is fine otherwise I say we stick with what we have.

Isn't Charlie Weiss available, he was an expected savior when nd hired him last time. He prob needs to go back to work to replenish his out of work bennies.

Your blaming Declan is a disgrace.
