Jason La Canfora CBS Article regarding Kizers draft slide

I keep waiting to read why some fans have given absolution to Kelly?

I'm not so sure anyone has given absolution to Kelly over 2016, but I have to ask. What is the inverse of giving absolution to Kelly? Would that be droning on incessantly every day for months on the same theme, pushing the same agenda over and over and over again, managing to even bring that agenda into threads that have nothing to do with the topic? Would that be it?

My favorite people on this board are the ones that know Kelly is a below average coach at this level and Trump supporters.

God bless us all!!!!!

Go Irish!!!!!
Trump2020!!!!!

Did anyone read this article? It basically made it seem that Kizer slid out of the first round because NFL execs didn't like the way former ND teammates spoke of Kizer. Said when players from ND were being interviewed and were asked about Kizer that nobody got excited about him.

I have shown up to admit I was wrong on Kizer. I thought the physical and mental aspects of his game would make him a draft riser. Rather, he seemed altogether unprepared for the combine and pro day. His measurables needed to outshine his bad tape from 2016. I thought for sure they would, but I was wrong. He basically shot himself in the foot, confirming concerns from his film.

I agree with the OP, and the (unlinked) article. This was never Kizer's team. Not in the eyes of the players nor in the eyes of Kelly. I started a thread back in 2015 after Zaire went down in the Clemson game. I predicted a fiasco after that Showtime series caught Kelly telling Zaire and his mom that this was his team, and would be here for him when he was healthy. From that time onward, Kelly did everything to give Zaire the shot he promised. That impacted Kizer's development and probably cost us both the Texas and Stanford games in 2016. Zaire is a big team, rah-rah guy - a leader. Kizer is more thoughtful and introverted. I'm sure the players picked up on this, thus some of the comments.

I disagree that his draft stock slid due to comments from other players or coaches. His poor play last season did that, some his fault and some not.

I was surprised to hear how rough his combine and pro day were. I guess as an ND fan, I overlooked a lot of his deficiencies last season. Those showed up on his film, and he proved them by his pre-draft performances.

The bottom line on Kizer is that Kelly and ND didn't prepare him to be an NFL QB in the 2 years he was here. Part of that is circumstance. He was thrust into the role before he was ready. Part of that is Kelly. He never embraced Kizer as his starter and Kizer lost reps and preparation as Zaire was in the picture. Part of that is on Kizer. He had 2 years eligibility left. I don't know of many college QBs who are NFL ready after that. Even Trubisky had 4 years in the program, 2 years as a backup with some legit stats and a year as starter.

Kizer has a chance to be a very good pro. He needed the perfect situation, and I'm not sure Cleveland was it. I'm a Bengals guy, and really like Hue Jackson. I don't think these are the same old Browns, so maybe he has a shot. I would have loved him in AZ or KC though.

a lot of praise for Hue Jackson; the worm may have turned in Cleveland.

(none of the QB's drafted are NFL ready! those are rare talents. Elway and Manning both had difficult early years. But there are no shortcuts to getting exposed to top coaching and experiencing the pro game environment...who knows, maybe DK can return to visit ND in 3 years and share his NFL experiences with Kelly...or even get Kelly that long sought after interview (in Buffalo!)

Couldn't have gone to a worse team/program. Don't think Tom Brady or Montana could succeed there.

Agree with most of what you posted. That said the staffs job is to win games first and foremost not to be a farm team for the NFL.

Kizer was projected to be the 2nd or 3rd QB off the board. He was the 3rd selected. I don't see this as surprising. Middle of the second round isn't really a slide.

Your notion of what other players said about Kizer doesn't really hold water either. Same goes for what Kelly said pre-draft about DK. Let's suppose Kelly had nothing but high praise for DK, and said he should be the first pick in the draft. Let's suppose Kizer's teammates speak highly of their QB and spew compliments left and right. Do you think this would've made Kizer a high 1st round draft choice?? Of course not. No one cares what other people say!!! Teams do their own evaluations.

Kizer was drafted right where he should've been drafted. No coaches, no parents, no teammates, no grandma's, no childhood friend's or priest's "comments" would have changed that. His combine, pro day and play on the field dictated his draft stock.

He was the 4th selected. Three went in the first 12 picks of the draft (Trubisky, Maholmes, Watson).

Urban Myer had glowing remarks about Aaron Hernandez to the NE Patriots and look where that got him. Kelly tells the truth about Kizer and people think Kelly should have just lied.

Some call it the "It" factor; a presence on the field and in the locker room that exudes confidence in yourself and in your teammates to win under any circumstance, and the ability to deliver. The kind of character that inspires teammates to say they would go to war with you, want you in their fox hole, etc... it's leadership at the most basic level. My sense is that Kizer lacks in this regard. Combine this with last season's record, his tendency to revert to poor mechanics under pressure, and his draft selection should not be a surprise. I just really hoped for Him to be drafted by Pitt with the opportunity to learn and develop for a year or two under Big Ben.

good for DK, getting away from fans who want to pin the whole staff-team meltdown on him.
Why in heck would he have given any thought to returning to fans such as you guys.
The whole clubhouse atmosphere was problematic. Team leadership from the staff was abysmal.

The '16 season was 100% on Kelly's leadership. Shame on you guys

He was the fourth QB selected.

and he achieved his goal of playing in the NFL. But ... not everyone, neither coach nor player does ...

No one did that. Grow up.
