I'll go ahead and ask. ND wins vs Stanford...

bad argument. suppose a champ has 2 or 3 losses and another much better conference has an unbeaten and a team with one loss ? that's fair ?

I assume you were asking if a 2nd place team in another league was better than another conference champion( you couldn't have an undefeated team that didn't win their conference championship). Secondly, if the intent of college football is to keep the playoff small then you should have to win your conference championship to get in. Again, your scenario is trying to draw us back into the picking and choosing and eyeball test.

Well first of all we don't really know who is better, the leagues don't play each other enough to really say which league is better except by observation/again more picking and choosing. Maybe one league is much deeper than the other league. Maybe one team that lost twice early has simply improved to the point where now they are the best team.

If you want a larger playoff 16 teams or more then sure there would be some choice made but if it is 4 or 6 it needs to just be conference champions. People play their way in from the P5 leagues and no human element to it that discriminates against certain teams.

Nonsense. They should take the top 4, period. Conference champs should not get a free pass. "Playing your way in" with 2-3 losses is not playing your way in at all.

You didn't get a free pass if you were a conference champion. You only don't want that is because you don't want to join a league.

Not necessarily a free pass, but an easier road. Most conferences have a conference championship game. Two divisions in those conferences. A 9-3 team could very easily win their division and then win the one game playoff vs. a team that went 11-1.

I don't want to see 10-3 teams in the playoff. Having a loss be so catastrophic is what makes college football so fun.

Sure you do. Merely by winning a conference championship, you get a playoff bid, no matter what else you do. Let's use the Pac 12 as an example. Right now, UCLA is 8-3 and USC is 7-4. One of them will be playing Stanford for the Pac 12 championship. Stanford is now 9-2, but could be 9-3 if ND beats them. There is a real possibility that a 3 loss team, or even a 4 loss team, will win the Pac 12. Should the Pac 12 winner get a playoff spot? In your conference champ scenario, they would.

The NFL is the most successful sport out their, so it would be a good idea to look at what they do but it was more than JUST THE NFL, every sports league out there professional or college includes major conference champions in their playoffs.

I would like a larger playoff but a real simple one is all P5 conference champions and everyone plays their way in. One spot goes to a G5 league who wins a play in game against another G5 league. That's way its still small and you have to win your conference champion and nobody is picking and choosing what P5 teams are in.
That's a dumb idea.

CFB and the NFL are VERY different. CFB is also very different from other college sports that have longer seasons and more opportunities to play out of conference games. CFB does not have a level playing field when it comes to scheduling. Some conferences and teams play extremely weak out of conference opponents including FCS opponents while others don't. Until there are rules that make scheduling more uniform and fair for all FBS teams there should be no consideration to giving P5 champions automatic bids to any playoff format that includes 8 playoff teams or less.
Said perfectly.

Truthfully, no, I'll be a bit bummed, but not livid or upset. I honestly believe ND would get embarrassed in the playoff. ND is NOT a playoff caliber team this year, especially with the injuries.
How much time did you spend in the PSU showers?

not at all. it's about who are the best teams. some conferences are very top heavy like the big 10. a few good teams and the rest is garbage.

No I wouldn't be upset. I'll watch whatever bowl game we play in and the season is over for me. It's on to the high school all star games and NSD.
this. i don't let the outcome of a sporting event shape my demeanor or mood. they don't get in so be it. i'll be looking forward to whatever bowl game they play in and thrilled with the fact that the program is on the most solid ground it's had since 1993. the future is extremely bright. the ship has finally been righted.

I agree with this. Whether ND goes 11-1 or 10-2, I think that the fact we were able to do so, in light of the injuries we experienced, is remarkable.
