This game should have been 28-10 if it weren't for a bad fumble by Hunter but Kelly and Van Gorder did a great job of keeping the team focused in the 2nd half. It is obvious we have issues on defense, I have said that from day one, but our coaches aren't out there missing tackles and biting on every trick or play action pass. That being said the secondary, basically Russell, came up huge in the 4th period. I mean if we had more guys playing like Day, Jaylon, and Russell on each level this would be a solid defense but unfortunately we don't have that talent like some on here keep talking about.

Regardless, nice win against a good USC team with a lot of speed and talent. Let's hope we can keep the momentum going, especially with a lot of road games coming up. Also hope some of the recruits visiting were impressed and come join the ND family!

Go Irish!!

If I remember you have been hard on the coaching staff from time to time.

I have questioned kelly from time to time about play calls but never sit here and talk about how he should be fired. I have never questioned van gorder at all because I understand he isn't working with the greatest talent on the d-line and secondary. neither of them are out there missing tackles, fumbling, etc. etc. they are doing a good job.

For those who follow recruiting and were informed who the visitors were the 1st half was especially frustrating.
A thread earlier mentioned that this could be a program changing weekend and at the half that change was not looking good. The game turned on a couple of plays, but it should never have been that close against a very wounded but talented opponent.
Crisis averted.

No argument with your thread premise as you acknowledge the defensive problems. Anyone not recognizing that, has a mindset to just plan refuse to see the obvious, or is part of the 'Kclan' of posters here. Seeing is believing, not reading.

I like BVG's schemes. I just wish they would get some of the basics right. Such as basic tackling.

Last week they had to wrap up against Navy on option play. So why would they change and no wrap up against vastly superior talent this week against USC?

Yes some times they just got burned and didn't have that option. But many times they were in position and went for a dive tackle or pushing them out of bounds when they should have just wrapped up for a tackle. You could have taken as many as 14 points off the board just that way. Let alone how many conversions and short yardage runs could have been stopped.

Once BVG gets them to actually tackle. And still runs the schemes he does now. Then I will be happy

Very, very disappointing defensive effort. Terrible tackling, bad pursuit angles, DB's with their back always turned away from the QB except the Russell interception (a Great one) those are fundamentals which the coaches should be held responsible to teach. Way too much Kool-Aide drunk by many on this site. There really needs to be some objectivity here to understand reality and know how this team could become a Natl Champion.

As far as recruiting, this game should appeal to players on both sides of the ball, defense and offense. ND's offense, with a terrific young QB, is fun and exciting to execute. Any skill player should be really interested in working with this type of system. The defense? They showed they need help at many positions especially DL and LB (and who, recruits, was there watching?). So playing time is there right away for those who come. This game should have been a blow out. Sadly, it wasn't. BUT, with this win the rest of the schedule will be exciting to watch and to prepare for Stanford, which should be the only obstacle left before the BCS.

There is no BCS anymore. Do you follow the game?

ND is 6-1. Keep on criticizing though.

Nice post -- I think ND will finish with a great recruiting class as I think we are heading to a 11-1 finish . We do need four or five studs to keep this going .

It's about players first and foremost

When ND got a pass rush in the fourth qtr Kessler imploded . Please note that ND is playing with Cage and Tillery @ DT not Jarron Jones . Also Kelly got with K Russell after Ju Ju beat him deep and told him to play the ball in the air -- I'm paraphrasing " your a talented player play the dam ball " fast forward INT in fourth qtr
Re Cole Luke Kelly said he gets too nosey and gives up big plays as a result .

If ND has the same pass rush in the first three qtrs as they did in the fourth qtr ND wins by 3 - 4 scores

Kelly said it in his presser if you don't put three kids from USC down on the ground " they will make you pay dearly " watch the presser . Have to wrap guys up - again that is about players making a play not scheme .

Scheme gets over hyped sometimes -- when rubber hits the road it is on russell and luke weather a guy makes a 50 yd gain or russell sends a dagger with a fabulously athletic play and seals a ND win .

Players make plays -- that's why coaches spend 12 months a year recruiting not studying play books .

There will always be people that bash or at least disagree with the coaches. That is all part of having a site like this. I find the disagreements entertaining. We all get the benefit of not having to make a decision but deciding after the fact whether or not the decision was right. It's like congress spending someone else's money. A great job! ND has a great coaching staff but they are human and they make mistakes. The players are 18-22 year olds doing the best they can, but they are kids. ND football is special and I thank everyone on this site for all of the entertaining posts. It's great to be IRISH!

Sadly nothing will stop certain people from being their normal pathetic poster selves. As I watched the game, I was laughing thinking about all of the usual posters who just can't wait until the game is over before they declare how bad Kelly is. Many of us have said it until we get sick of saying it - just relax and enjoy the game.

It was a very fun game to watch. The bomb to Fuller had any real fan jumping out of their seat. The double pass against us had us screaming at the defense and BVG. And on and on.....just an exciting game that ended with us beating an extremely motivated and talented team. Oh yeah, and we're 6-1!!!

And Perse, my Christmas wish this year is for you to finally pick a side......

side: ND is my side! not an individual who is here today gone tomorrow!
do you guys read posts or are you influenced just by the few mental cases here!
I have repeatedly given BK props here for the staff and personel.
But the defense is playing badly! for some time now. I like the persona of BVG; he brings energy. But his D is not performing for 4 Qtrs. The other issues are those that corrected get you to a championship!

Perse, just shut up, you're no better than Mo1e or cgvr!

I've accurately called kelly a vulgar purple faced gnome and stated that the responsibility for the Clemson loss was to be shared from the top down.... kelly's PC confirms my thoughts.

Some people obviously can't handle reality....

Plus, there are now multiple posters on this site with multiple handles... kelly35, argus..... That's the most pathetic part of this board.

Yesterday was a great win, but it was hardly a well coached game. It was a sandlot shoot out and we had more bullets. We've got a week off and can now regroup. We need to stay on course and get additional help. Again, we're on thin ice, but breathing.

Yoon is an assassin.... That was so clutch....

Of course not. He's too busy trolling an ND board while masquerading as an ND fan. I've suspected for some time that the OP is yet another one of Brian Davidson's aliases.

Sorry, but this doesn't change the fact Kelly screwed his team out of being 7-0 because he didn't go for 1 @ Clemson. The atmosphere in the stadium was epic last night. BVGs D gave up 600 yards to a head coach-less, unranked team. I say they need to get to work and keep getting better. Stop kissing their a$$es dude.

This is hands down the FUNNIEST post ever. You have repeatedly knocked Kelly ad nauseum, but because we beat USC,you jump off him and bury VanGorder! Get back on your meds please!

Unfortunately there is a mindset generated by a handful on this board that picking one decision by a coach after a loss is the reason for the team losing . It is a mindset born out of ignorance re athletic competition .

an example - over looking flagrant physical or mental mistakes by players during a game ( clemson ) ie Chris Brown fumble on goal line or Kizer Robinson exchange on two point conversion . Rather than accept the fact that those plays were poorly executed by the players a nit wit will blame the coach for the play call itself regardless that it was perfectly diagrammed .

I think I make a good point here and that is those who have never competed at any level in sport ( persevereae - pazuzu - turnover ) don't understand , appreciate or relate to in any way that the lions share of responsibility for any play typically falls on the shoulders of the player .

How could someone who has never played sports understand that -- in the case of TOM - perseveereee - pakuzzuao ) they can't so they just babble on about the coach did this or the coach did that -- pure rubbish . Brian Kelly is the consummate professional . Perseveereere ,pazzuxxu ,TOM ,cvgr and their band of nit wits on the other hand are simply ignorant characterless trash with severe issues .

Why did kelly take responsibility for the clemson loss in his PC? You keep making stuff up to stir the pot. The fact is that most folks agree that the clemson loss was shared responsibility from the top down. I didn't see any posts that blamed kelly solely for the loss. There really is something wrong with someone that has had handles banned, recreates multiple new ones and then lies about stuff..... you are quite the bore....

Completely agree with you and I didn't want to check this site at half because I knew I would see the stupidity come out. I mean we were on our way to opening up a can of whoop ass until the bad fumble by Hunter and that changed the entire game. Kelly, BVG, and the other coaches did a great job in that first half but the players half to execute, you can't blame the play callers for mistakes. The second half they actually coached better because they kept the kids in the game. I think the comeback against Clemson, although a loss, helped our players know they could get it done against a solid team and it is something we lacked for a long time before Kelly came here.

By the way, I am not sure who our special teams coach is but I have to say that is the largest improvement this season and has definitely won games. I mean we have a kickoff and punt returner for the first time in years, Yoon is doing well in first season, punt blocks (haven't seen that for a long time) etc... Punting and kick coverage are the only things so far that aren't solid but hopefully they will improve.

Tough games coming up with Temple, Pitt, BC, and Stanford all on the road so will be tough to win out. Temple, Pitt, and BC maybe influenced by the weather as well so hopefully our run games keeps getting better, maybe some plays for Wimbush with the read/option? I know overall though it will come down to our defense and whether our players can execute. We aren't going to get some magical pass rusher so those extra players sent on blitzes can't keep missing tackles ( to that haters I am sure they think BVG is at fault lol) but seriously I think we had 2-3 missed sacks yesterday and you aren't going to win that way. Of course our secondary can only get better, I hope, but how much I am not sure? Russell is stepping up but Shumate, Max and Cole are unfortunately not playing up to their potential. If I were a coach for any of our remaining opponents I would run at least one trick play and a lot of play action because these kids bite on a lot. The thing I don't get about is that our front seven's biggest strength is against the run so they really don't need to play so aggressive.

Oh well, let's hope for the best. 6-1 after losing so many key players before the season started, I am happy!

It's kind of nice to see there are dumb people here besides Mo1e and cgvr. Sad, but they probably enjoy the company.

For some people Coach bashing is a Varsity sport. Just beat our rival by 10 in a marquee night game and same people whine and bitch about schemes, play calls, personel , etc . I've seen Faust, Davies, Willingham and Weis. Kelly and staff seem like rocket scientists compared to those guys.

Go back to your asylum crazy person. You're just pissed because all those you mention and attack have you and all your aliases figured out and call you out on your stupidity, delusion and lies. You make it so easy.

Get a life and realize no one here wants you here. You bring this board down with all your craziness and continue to lower the FB IQ of every site you post on. That's just one of many reasons why you and your numerous usernames are banned everywhere else. If this site was moderated you and your alternate personalities would be banned here as well. Lucky you it isn't.
