The "best" team in a P4 conference is often not the winner of the conference championship game. If we are going to continue to give seeding priority to conference champions, we need to get rid of the championship games.
I know they are huge moneymakers. Here's how to make up for that:
1) Allow each P4 conference to have one "showcase" regular season game on championship weekend, along with the G5 championship games. Won't draw the same ratings/money that a championship game would, but still be something.
2) In years when the Labor Day/Thanksgiving weekends span only 13 weeks (as opposed to 14), start the season a week earlier to give the networks an extra week of games.
3) Expand the playoff to 14 or 16 teams. Most, if not all of those extra teams will be P4 teams, so more money for those conferences.
Speaking of money, this year the Big Ten will split two shares of semifinal money. The SEC will split one share. Notre Dame gets one share all to themselves.
