Curious that after a loss how significant portions of posters attack the coaching staff but after a win nary a word .

Frustrated jocks I suppose that in the invisible world of cyber space fantasize that if they were the coach the team would do better .

BTW just as a reminder to those sages to whom I refer , you do realize you have the benefit of hindsight ?

Starting with Knute Rockne - Bud Wilkinson thru Vince Lombardi not one of those guys after the fact would have called the same play over again if they knew it wouldn't work - not one time . Also in a 6-0 game vs army ND's offense didn't score on 90% of their possessions does that make Knute a horse's ass when it comes to offense ?

In the age of the internet ,when Wilkinson lost to ND ending his 50 game win streak there would have been infantile FUBARS in their basements blasting away on their keyboards taking shots at his play calls that day .

In my world I'm grateful that ND is now relevant again nationally and I tip my hat to Kelly , the staff and most importantly the players . Kudos - I find those that take pot shots over a 2 pt conversion decision or a fumble characterless . Just my opinion of course . What I do know is this , for ND to have been in a position to win that game Sat nite speaks volumes to the condition of our program and it's players talent level and tenacity - kudos guys !!

Big picture -- Big picture !

It's great to care it's possible to care too much and it's unrealistic to think every play will work on offense and we should never give up a first down on defense
Razor thin margins all the time we were 1 play away from losing to UVA and I could hear the moaning about Kelly letting a backup QB throw deep instead ok playing for FG if he missed the throw.

I'm with you - people need a reality check and a few more hobbies - I guess everything they do is just perfect

The ongoing unforced errors continue to plague the team. We need a lot of help and will have to be perfect the rest of the way to make the playoffs. The reality is that we may have blown our best chance at post season glory with another below average performance. There is a lot of football to play and we cannot afford a misstep....

I support the coaches. But... I am not a mindless lemming. Kelly'S continual trust in the run up the gut was futile. Everyone but Kelly could see it.

I do not fault him for the first 2pt. Conversion attempt. But the second was idiotic. We had effectively moved the ball regularly to the final 2 pt. attempt, THEN He reverted to straight ahead.

I wore my game jersey. I agonized early and celebrated late. I do not think we played like a final four team, but wish we did.

Kelly is an arrogant play caller. If he draws it up on Tuesday, it must work... because he figured it out. Then on Saturday, if it doesn't work he keeps at it... because he "knows" it will work.

I do not think he will ever let anyone else call plays. Like I said, he's arrogant. And, he's our coach. GO IRISH!

Question...if we hadn't fumbled 4 times ...had 6 plus drops....would you say we were contenders? I'm not excusing but I can say that ND is right in the mix at the top talent wise. How about this.
If bama plays a navy last week....and not really a school for redemption, what say you? Well they must suck because they had 4 turnovers against ole miss, at home, in great conditions. But they came right back and obliterated Georgia. Ole miss just got smashed by Florida. So Florida must be the GOAT team right?
What ND does going forward is paramount. Not so much what but how. They have to make statement after statement!! If they do things are fine

I was hard on Bk all offseason (losing to Northwestern and Louisville at home?) but I have no issue with what he's done this season. Even the first 2 pt conversion. I'd have rather seen a different play called on the second 2 pt conversion though. Fans are predictable. They are happy when their team wins and upset when they lose. And let's not go too far: ND should always been in a position to win at Clemson. They get no added points for that. I expected them to win. BK expected them to win. The players expected to win.

Oh and welcome back, Continually.

I don't think anyone is ever going to say that 'bama sucks under Saban. Sure they are capable of a bad outing, but they are a more than proven commodity. They dominate regularly and their losses are relatively rare. (Thank you lane kiffin)..

kelly's adjustment vs clemson did not take place until we were in panic mode down 21-3 in the 4th quarter. Pre game, knowing that the weather was going to be a factor, posters on this site were calling for us to take advantage of our speed with underneath passing. Clemson has no answer for Fuller, Smith, Brown, others speed in a short shot offense. Plus, the shorter passes allow more control for Kizer. Had kelly done this from the outset instead of the delay running into Clemson's teeth we would have won imo..... In fact, that type passing may also have had the benefit of loosening things in the running game.

As it was, we did not give Clemson our best shot and we still almost pulled it out. I am not familiar with Clemson's full season body of work so I don't know if they played up to par. It sure looked like they did..... They were beatable and unfortunately escaped....

Just my opinion... we did not look like a championship team. We possibly could have been with Zaire, Folston, et al.

I hope we go 12-1, but honestly I fear a 10-3 or worse, with a BIG challenge this Saturday.

I do desperately hope for a 12-1 season, but unlike Coach K, I keep getting flashes of reality.

There are some who are frustrated jocks There are others who see things that never happened under our very good coaches. Kelly has done wonders. He is lacking in some decision making and game planning His game planning has improved a lot but is still suspect at least one game per year

Every year, there is one game - or more - that Kelly loses. Sure , their are other contributing factors but only Kelly can be directly pointed to for having lost about 7 games all on his own (meaning the team played good enough to win but Kelly made a stupid call lake the 2 pt on Saturday)
FSU Champs bowl, Clemson, Northeastern, Tulsa, USF, etc

Because of Kelly, we will always have a screw up

Also because of Kelly, the program is in the best shape since 1993 - so along with being competitive, we have to deal with at least one very bad game from our coach.

This team has to settle down and take care of business week to week. You are correct about how we've looked.

It's been below average for the better part of the season. My goodness the first half versus umass was an utter disaster until the closing minutes. We escaped va..... Clemson was ripe for the picking....

kelly is capable of dialing up gems. We're going to need at least 2. It is tough to not look ahead to stanford and southern cal.....

Navy should be met with a level of frustrated violence the likes of which they've never seen.

We'll need the stars to align to make the playoff.

cfb is a crazy sport and we dug ourselves an unnecessary hole.

Hold on there, "Wonders"? by what standard? Here are some numbers from "the other site"

"Road win %: Ty - .588, Weis - .542, Kelly - .577 *

And that includes 2012 -- otherwise it'd be .477

Also, the record would drop from 15-11 to 12-10 (.545) if neutral site road games are excluded.

2010: 2-2 (L @ MSU and Navy (N), W @ BC and USC)
2011: 3-2 (L @ Mich and Stan, W @ Pitt, Purdue and WF)
2012: 5-0 (W @ Navy (N), MSU, Okla, BC and USC)
2013: 2-3 (L @ Mich, Pitt and Stan, W @ Purdue and AFA)
2014: 2-3 (L @ FSU*, ASU and USC, W @ Syr (N) and Navy (N))
2015: 1-1 (L @ Clem, W @ UVa, TBD @ Temple, Pitt and Stanford)

These are the road records for some other ND coaches. (Neutral-site road games are included. I only went back to Brennan because we played more neutral-site games before him, and we already know Leahy and Rockne had through-the-roof WPs at all sites.)

Davie: 11-15 (.423)
Holtz: 43-12 (.782)
Faust: 12-13 (.480)
Devine: 25-8-1 (.750)
Parseghian: 41-9-3 (.802)
Kuharich: 7-13 (.350)
Brennan: 16-10 (.615)"

The only "wonder" would be a National Championship everything else doesn't matter....

I agree. If ND goes thru the motions against Navy... They are a 9-3 team. Navy should leave that field on Saturday a completely dismantled team.

If you are going to saddle Kelly with most of the close losses it is only fair to also credit him for most of the close wins. It is like wanting to blame a president for one part of the economy all the while refusing to credit him for another part of the economy.

Apparently you fail to see what a message board really is .... a sounding board .... the fact that the board is generally more quiet after wins isn't a sign that people are missing out on b'ing .... it is a sign of contentment .... most don't generally run to the board to scream ... Hurray!! .... when they lose you have a frustrated fan base that wants to vent (sound off) .... when we lose because the coaching staff does something boneheaded you can times it by 10 .... human nature

Your opinion is also skewed by the fact you fail to see the boneheadedness of Kelly's call .... hindsight is not the issue .... say again .... hindsight is not the issue .... if the 2 pt had worked the issue would be they were fortunate not smart .... it is stupid either way to go for 2 when it is not necessary ... kick the xp and take the damn point .... you don't refer to the card with 14 minutes left for the same reason you don't in the 1st quarter .... there is too much time left and anything can still happen .... take the damn point

Agree ... the big picture is bright for ND football with Kelly getting credit for that ... but the Big picture isn't as bright as it should be because at times Kelly is a moron

Sorry but that has to be one of the most ridiculous statements in the history of this message board. Army was a freaking powerhouse at that time. Beating Army at that time was like beating Bama or OSU today.

I respectfully disagree on the notion of Folston and Malik.
What lost the game? Not ready for that environment at the start. They were deer in headlights for the first 10 mins.

Secondly you think a slower Folston would have been better against the fastest defense ND faced to date? In an already slow conditions field?? I don't.

The fumbles, the dropped passes....on clean catchable nice gain passes mind you. How many first down conversions were dropped? A significant amount!

Sometimes the coaches are at fault and I'm the first to criticize that but Saturday's game was on our players. Hold onto the football, catch the football.
If those two simple things were done we win by 10 or more....then Kelly and his card, players being in awe of the environment...are moot!

Think about it....if you cut half the drops out and turnovers ...even in being awe at the start we still win that game fairly easily.

Btw, Kizer is a much better passer. He has a much better pocket presence than Malik does.
I find it funny that Malik won us one big game ..**Lsu*** oh and what happens if EG doesn't come in and make a few passes for Malik in that game....??? So because of that game suddenly Malik is all world? LOL.

He wasn't doing so well in the Virginia game before injury.

I love Malik and his running but I don't believe he makes a difference on Saturday and definitely not Folston.

I disagree with respect to your thoughts on Folston. He is very good at getting the tough yards....like taking 2 or 3 vs caught behind the line of scrimmage. He will stick his foot in the ground and take what he gets. Procise tries to hit the home run too often. He is so inexperienced as a rb. He is doing a great job filling in but think that Folston would have been a big asset last week.

I've actually seen less criticism of the coaching staff after the loss.

The only crital point was the early 2 point Attempt.

Time we face reality. If we are going to be a top ten type team. You have to beat teams with lesser talent. Can top teams have a bad game
and lose to lesser talented teams ? Sure, but they rarely do.
if t his is Kelly's best team, then Clemson should be that rare loss.
Bad weather, fumbles, dropped passed are not onLy on the players, but also on the coaches. Protecting the football can and should be coached. Dropped passes are more difficult to control, but , perhaps,
it shows a lack of concentration ?
I remember reading that players who fumbled on a Leahy coached team, had to carry a football around the Campus for the whole next week.
I noticed that many fans are posting on just how good this Navy team is ? If ND , after the Clemson loss, Don 't absolutely come out with the fire and game plan to crush Navy, I will be one very disappointed fan.
It is time, Kelly, staff , and team , also beat USC , Standford, and
and the rest of the teams on our schedule. If this is truly Kelly's best team, we had our rare lose for this season !

I support the coaches. But... I am not a mindless lemming. Kelly'S continual trust in the run up the gut was futile. Everyone but Kelly could see it.

Yep, I've said for a few years now. Brian Kelly the HC is very good. Brian Kelly the OC is terrible. Sadly I think the OC is going to get the HC fired.

Ha. I have met Kelly, and both of his parents. I have talked to players and parents of players. I have been on the side lines during games too. So if you think you know me, or something about me, you're wrong... and most definitely ignorant.

The main problems with the game was not the 2 point conversion. yes it was not the best idea. I thought we stayed the running course to long. Take all that away the team had how many turnovers and clemson had 1 That was the difference. Also there were blocking issues on the edges most of the game. Also misses or locked on passing by Kizer. Considering the weather the D played well and some better decisions by coaches and players along with better weather we win that game. The Irish IMHO are a better team just did not play that way. Lets see if we play better against navy and usc

Enjoy 8-4 bud.

I was actually smart enough to call it out immediately before even the TO was called. You go for 1 @21-9. Being down, at the time, by a TD, 2-ptr, and a FG is more manageable than having to get two TD's. Just look at how Northwestern beat ND last year. Stupid people like yourself are entertaining at least.

Exactly. It's all in good fun. I worry about some in here. They take things way too seriously. I prefer ND winning just as much as the next guy but it's beginning to be comical how consistent Kelly is at making bad decisions in-game.

Not true. What Malik brings to the table is legitimately defending all 11 players on the offense. The way Clemson was fitting the gaps they were not honoring the QB keep. Clemson sold out in between the tackles to the point it was madness watching ND trying to between them. Watch the play when they faked the Kizer draw and hit CJ on the wheel route. Every Clemson player bit on the QB draw.

The Irish losing is your thing Buguit. Of course you post more after a Ioss. I post more after an Irish win. I feel too sick after a loss to post much.

This is true .... I'm not a rah rah guy and I see nothing wrong with anyone who wants to "celebrate" wins on the message board ... I on the other hand am quietly content .... None the less I didn't run to the message board right after the game .... But when I see Kelly's garbage excuse I have no problem pointing out what should be obvious .... There was more than one contributing factor to the loss .... To's were huge ..... That stuff happens in a monsoon and sometime when it's not a monsoon .... And yet we still we're in ot if Kelly wasn't stupid ... Being stupid on occasion is a Kelly calling card unfortunately. It's hard to overcome player mistakes when the coach isn't helping

TO'S OR NOT ... WE ARE STILL IN OT IF WE KICK THE DAMN EXTRA POINT

Being a home run hitter does not mean he always goes for the home run .... He has put his head down on more than one occasion and shown plenty of toughness ... Once again a simpleton's view
