Credit Rees Again

I have to agree. Could have gone spastic after BYU scored but stayed with the run and that is what closed out the game. I didn't like the going into the pistol on the goal line and the TE screen not going to work...BUT outside of that I think TR is really growing into his role.

Wait until we face a real defense like Clemson and then you will see how good he really is. I still think we can do better. Against marginal defenses tbe run game and Mayer are a given. More receivers on offense need to be developed. Thomas is coming along and Styles needs to be utilized more. Where is Wilkens? The offense should be consistent running plays mixed in with high perentage passes vs any team.

Do you think that you’re qualified to determine whether or not a play fails based upon the play call itself versus the players’ ability to execute the play on the field ?

He did some good things today but a few absolute head scratchers…. Multiple screens to Mayer is just moronic, fourth and short pistol is moronic… they all happened in big instances.
No excuse to only score 28 when you are leading and have 500 yards

So you blame Rees for the players inability to score on the goal line on numerous occasions ?

Yes. Thanks for asking. I like the use of the safety valve dumpoff play but it cant be telegraphed by Pyne.

What are your football credentials, the ones that qualify you to make that distinction ?

Staying at a Holiday Inn Express doesn’t qualify you !

Pat- we’re all just fans talking about the game. No one needs to give you their “credentials” in order to have an opinion.

Some posters really come after you, and I always felt that you unfairly had a bad rap around here…..but goodness gracious, you asking what makes someone qualified to have an opinion is insanity.

Tommy stuck to the running game with the three-headed monster. Also credit HH with the line play.
Yeah, my view on Rees has definitely went up over the last few weeks. This new staff had a rough first couple of weeks but seem to have figured things out a lot better now.

You know, that's what football is all about. Seeing improvement each week and learning from mistakes.

If anyone thought that Coach Freeman would be an elite HC from the beginning, they were living in a dream world. The guy is learning as he goes and the interactions of all the coaches has to be re-developed after Kelly left.

The tight end screen could definitely work, but you can't expect the defense to forget about Michael Meyer on a fourth and goal.

IrishMike,

The “Holiday Inn Express” should have tipped you off that I was kidding you !

Let’s stick to the goal line plays for a second.
When we can’t score from 2 or 3 yards whose fault is that ?
In this instance mostly Rees…. 4th and half yard running play from pistol is about as dumb as it gets because at goal line defense doesn’t have to worry about home run, they’re selling out to stop run… qb sneak, under center simple plays to get half yard

Pistol is the best power run formation compared to shotgun. Without a true run threat at QB shotgun tips your hand

His post game and half time interviews have the same lack of insight on the game as his expressions on the sidelines. Work in progress

If we can’t run, we are toast against any decent team

HE was much better. But he had to call a screen on 4th and goal to remind us that he is a young up and coming OC. It reminds me of the finale of Better Call Saul a great movie that had to have a completely implausible plot shift.

I would agree with that.

But you can throw in………. If we can’t protect and give the QB time we’re toast !

The staff chose to start Buchner over Pyne. Is the staff improving or is Pyne a better fit and things are clicking because of him?

You gotta give Rees HUGE credit for these last two weeks. Offensive machine. And it was so bad the first three weeks, and did not have the look of something that was going to get 'fixed'. But fix it they have, because it's a night and day change. Going from looking something like the '07 team under Weis/Clausen, to looking like they haven't missed a beat from this fantastic playoff run we've been on for four years running now....

Both, Pyne is a much better fit, and the staff has definitely improved !

yet, on two of those short yardage calls, the BYU DL slanted to the A gap. All Estime has to do was bounce it outside, as the OL held the line of attack. This is where people don't understand the need for the OL and RB to do their jobs. Hell, AE could have a TD on the one play, it was wide open to boundary side.

If Buchner was healthy he would be starting. But the team might not be better because Rees may not have switched to a run heavy offense.

At least on the first one Estimate did not look at all. That tells me the play was drawn up as a pure halfback dive.

On fourth and a half I don’t care what gap anyone shoots on D… it shouldn’t matter to get a half yard unless you do a slow developing play like Rees called

Lol, ok. Gotcha.

and it wasn’t slow developing, Estime put his heat down early

Something like that. But BYU slanted and he merely had to pivot 20 degrees and he was in untouched
