Funny you said that. My brother officiates HS lacrosse and i asked why its not more popular. He says it's hard to find coaches and officials and it's also more expensive than most sports. A lot of high schools don't have lacrosse. Mine didn't. So it's multiple reasons why the sport hasn't grown.

I know others will bash me for this but I think lacrosse is way more entertaining to watch than baseball and soccer.

Great final four. Irish showed real grit. Everyone (Lynch on face-offs!) stepped up and we got a win with our best player ineffective because of injury! And.. we did it vs. Bama-level talent.

LAX will show Irish football how to do it! Congratulations!

Actually the sport is really booming. Ten years ago, players mainly came from the Northeast and Marland Va... Now there are players all over the country playing the game. I think you'll see it continue to explode.

Good to know. I wish I could have played it.
Same here. Growing up in the midwest, LAX was unheard of except for a few short lines in SI. First really got my attention when I was in college in DC. Noticed that some football players from MD and VA played LAX in the spring ... so became interested in it. My school was too small to field a team in addition to track and baseball, but wish it had.

It's way down the totem pole on the west coast, after HS Football, Basketball, Baseball, and Soccer.

And I would much rather watch March Madness.

Its catching on in the west ... thanks to ND and Denver, coaches Corrigan and Tierney had a number of ND - Denver games played in areas where Lacrosse doesn't exist ... and the game is catching on now.

Schools like Utah, Stanford, ... now have LAX teams (mostly women now though).

Catching on? I guess. Again, I can only comment on so. California....compared to HS Football, Basketball, Baseball, and Soccer, LAX is a distant fifth in the level of athlete the sport attracts, and popularity.

The East Coast is of course a different animal, from what I have read.

Was at ND when interest in LAX started in the late sixties. Those walking around with sticks and balls hardly looked like athletes. It has come a long way and is becoming a big time sport. More than 30,000 at today's game makes a tribute to that.

Figures. You need a scrotum to play. You Cali boys left such behind decades ago

While it remains a contact sport, more kids are gravitating toward LAX, especially in the suburbs as lifelong injuries are less frequent than in football and parents know that their kids aren’t going to the NFL

GREAT WIN ☘️

Where I live, not true. Football is king, and LAX is a distant fifth behind football, basketball, baseball, and soccer.

And in places like Texas and the deep south, you will never ever see LAX come close to football in popularity.

LAX is a regional sport, extremely popular in the East, Northeast, and somewhat in the Midwest.

Football may be the king now, but the trend in the suburbs is making LAX more and more popular.

What parent what’s to see their child suffer injuries, especially brain injuries.

Would styrofoam helmets reduce head/brain injuries ?

LAX is a regional sport that does not resonate to the same intensity in all areas of the country.

Left coast is usually slow to pick things up but when they do, with weather and large population is will be another boost for the sport

Interesting discussion. I think as time goes on, we are going to see more and more kids playing soccer and lacrosse; conversely, fewer kids are going to play football. The extent of brain injuries which result in playing football are going to cause fewer parents to allow their kids to play.

Some sports take longer to gain popularity.

Injuries from football are a growing concern, amongst parents and others

Funny Lax is picking up in NYC but leap years behind the suburbs like Long Island or Westchester. 11 kids on the field were from Chaminade HS & a handful from St Anthony’s out In Suffolk County. The goalie is from Massapequa ( baseball town ).

Somewhat in Midwest? Notre dame and northwestern just won their respective men and women titles. Stick to your beach vollyball

The fact that you’re from California explains all of your stupid posting.

Perhaps the safety technology will advance too, no?

The players are bigger, faster and stronger which leads to more violent collisions so it would seem unlikely that technology can offset those factors

4 years in the making for guys like Entenmann, Reilly Gray, and Chris Kav!!

Closure for the 2019 CHSAA title game where St. Anthony's (led by O'Neill, Naso, McAdorey, Danenza, etc.---All playing for Duke on Monday) mounted a 4th quarter rally to steal the crown, 14-13!!!

Good point. Was just thinking since we landed on the moon in 1969, we might be capable to put our noggins into making a helmet safer for big people by 2024. Maybe not.

This thread is a microcosm of the dickeshness of some in this board and this board is a microcosm of the misery spreaders that lurk among us … w guy posts that ND wins a championship in a sport in which the coach built the program from the ground up into a perennial contender and finally beats his nemesis which he lost to twice in previous title games … a nice conversation ensues until Biggus Dickus shows up to say that lacrosse isnt popular in California and off we go into name calling and petulant child land. Just wonderful, at least it last led about 10 replies.

And I think a lot of the expansion should be credited to coaches Tierny and Corrigan. Remember ND and Denver used to play their regular season games at neutral sites in areas where LAX was not yet popular. I think those games caught the eyes of some locals, and they then started giving the game a try.

Just wondering ... how many of our current seniors will be back next year? They should be getting an extra year of eligibility due to the pandemic cancelling the 2020 season.

A pro lacrosse league ready to attract young players attention is not yet in place. Other sports have developed enthusiastic city-based support that encourages greater local participation. Lacrosse is definitely growing at the grass roots level but it will take time.

As long as the NFL is printing $$$$$$$$$ and NFL players are paid really really well, football players will take the risk to earn a big paycheck.

"Follow the money."

A few quick google searches revealed that youth participation in lacrosse is growing by 10+% per year … football participation has declined every year since 2015. This aligns with my own experiences as a parent of multiple kids and their friends. Almost no one makes the NFL and those that do last an average of 3 years. I wonder where you get your ideas from?

It seems people would rather watch football and play lacrosse. Will lacrosse ever pass football as a spectator sport? Probably not anytime soon. Baseball, yeah I could see it happening.
