If Kelly is in what changes must he make?

He needs to be less of a CEO and more of a player's coach. Not sure someone in his late fifties can make this change but that is what is needed. His players are all over the place. The shit that happened every August is unacceptable (why doesn't it happen at Stanford?). Tillery's behavior was an embarrassment to the program and the U. Where is the leadership? There was none on the field (players) because Kelly doesn't seem to offer that kind of mentorship. He's done a decent job organizing and building the program (recruiting, other football changes) but his one of one work with the players has been shit. He HAS to change that! It might help to hire some coaches who can provide leadership and examples of that kind of behavior. Urban and Saban aren't afraid to hire former head coaches in DC or OC roles.

Kelly needs to swallow his pride, take off his diaper and find the right assistants.

Defensive Coordinator: Charlie Strong would be the best hire, great recruiter, solid man, good mentor, player's coach. (And maybe the future HC when Kelly leaves?)

Special Teams: ?

Other coaching changes?

I know everyone is for him leaving (and when I heard he was looking elsewhere I was persuaded) but as that doesn't look like it is happening -- and take a look at rivals' article on the amount of people coming back, damn, I'm excited by the upper class talent next year! -- a good DC hire might make this team a top ten team again. I mean that!

Also, he needs to work on guys thinking about jumping and convince them to stay. Say what you want about Kizer but he was throwing to a bunch of Freshman this year. Next year with A Jones back and the rest we will have some real (2015-like) weapons on this team! McGlinch and Morgan also are needed for us to get back to 10 wins and a top ten finish.

Finally, I think we all agree Kelly is looking to go to the NFL (he is more of an NFL CEO coach)... Thus he has all the motivation in the world to have "2012" year in order to get those offers again.

So guys, if we're stuck with him, (and we all bleed blue and gold) what does he need to do?

The only way at all a new DC and OC will make a difference is if Jack gives them complete autonomy. If the does that then the program is without a real leader and that's not going to go well.

The problem isn't the DC or the OC or the QB or the OL coach. The problem is Kelly

"what does he need to do?" -- Leave his DAMN EGO at the door. Learn, or re-learn, in-game and halftime adjustments. All year, he was too damn predictable. Yes, there are many other things, most of which you named.

There is ZERO sense of urgency or passion when these guys play -- almost like a sense of entitlement.

I believe Kelly is feeling the urgency now. He is about to be fired. And there doesn't seem to be too many people vying for his services. So, it is put up or shut up time. He needs to do exactly what you say... Will he? Can he? ND Nation can only hope as long as Jack sticks by him.

you going to let a 'squater' stay and coach your team?

the media will latch onto that one in the most laughable way?

just being realistic... if Strong hasn't been hired yet, Fleck isn't hired on Saturday or Schiano on Sunday then it seems Kelly will be back... I'm not one of these crybabies who is going to run away and not watch ND football next year, so, I'm trying to think of ways we can win with Kelly back. And, given the talent and IF, a big if, he can get a big time DC on board, I could see ten wins.

BK may have to wait until the bowl season is over to make a significant hire at the DC position. Again, he should go for the best in the college business and see what happens. But, the new DC has to have a successful rep as a recruiter. Then, while BK is multi-tasking, he has to find a serious top notch Special Teams Coord and BK has to take this very serious himself. Finally, BK needs to put Harry on notice that the OL was less than good. The jury is still out in my mind about the Conditioning side of things. But BK needs to take a long hard look at the situation.

Totally agree!

Funny thing about the new conditioning thing -- we did seem to have less major injuries this year, right? But we seemed to run out of steam in the second half.... Is that because of our very young lineup this year or are we not pushing the kids hard enough in order to avoid injury?

Jack and Kelly need to be fired to save the program. Kizer is not coming back. Zaire is gone. Give Kelly a qb with no experience on this team and he will not finish any better than 4-8. No DC worth a damn will come to ND for a lame duck Kelly who blames everyone else for his failures.

"Give Kelly a qb with no experience on this team and he will not finish any better than 4-8."

You mean like when he went 12-0 with a Qb with no experience?

Actually QB's with no experience under Kelly do very well. It's only after he "coaches" them that they begin to perform poorly.

IMHO, BK relies on a strong run game to set inexperienced QBs up for success. The recipe works with the offensive talent we've had. THEN he gets cocky and thinks he can start using an experienced QB to set up the run game (like Oregon used to do), but we haven't seen that succeed yet.

is it the water? the air? or just association to BK? but ND fans seem to be getting less sophisticated by the day!

I'd have to disagree. The only year under BK that we had a strong run game was last year. Every other year it has been anywhere from poor to abysmal. IMO, I think Kelly places too much on the shoulders of a QB and his plays are very predicable based on formation and personnel.

As the offense struggles Kelly places more and more responsibility on the QB and makes it impossible for a 20 year old college QB to function.

when and how you run the ball is the thing you want to look at; the Kelligula offense is sissy Nancy!
It is weak weak weak! It reflects who he is!

Last year was Sanford's first year with the program. I would argue that he may have influenced that run game.

His former boss, now at UW, orchestrated an offense (which I imagine is similar to what Sanford would prefer) that was pretty cool to watch last night... run, run, run again. Run until they make you throw or until you get single coverage on the WRs. Then run some more to wear the opposing defense out. And yet they still had a QB and WR that fell just short of conference records for passing TDs and receiving TDs. Interesting concept.

I expect Sanford to get out of South Bend poste haste! He could utterly destoy his reputation and career spending another year under Kelligula! Unless he has some sort of long term promise, It would be career suicide.

And if Sanford bolts, recruiting loses the only guy that resonates w/recruits. Kelly sucks at recruiting.

he will have options....and will go...For BK, who will be required to gut his staff...they will help him immensely with that....by bailing on him. This is going to be unpleasant.

I also believe that Sanford will take a OC job somewhere. He needs to bail out like LaFluer.

Quit.

Charlie Strong? Have you watched Texas the past 3 years? Special teams were as bad as Kelly's. Missed 3 PAT's in one game this year! Lost to Kansas!!!!!! Charlie would be a terrible hire! Kelly will not change. He needs to go. The damage is done.

Since 1993 we've had underperforming teams. Some better than others but overall underwhelming.
The head coach at ND is a CEO by design and by acclimation.
Until this culture changes no coach will be what everybody on this board is rooting for.
Sorry.

The fact you want Charlie Strong shows your lack of football knowledge...

I disagree. Charlie would be an excellent defensive coordinator. He may lack the requisite skills to lead as a HC but the two are worlds apart.

0-12 in 2012 Stu4don. I know it's hard for you but stay current. Recruiting will be brutal this year. Kelly has had 7 years to improve strength and conditioning. What makes you think he'll change that? He's a bad coach.

Kelly sucks at recruiting because he's a know it all ahole.

Good point.

Monkey... I'm an alum who lived his life-long dream to go to ND in the 70s. I read these sites, I write (too often), and I hope that next year will be better. Even as two of my sons are currently at Rose bowl bound USC, I remain and will alway be Fighting Irish. I am in the camp that says, okay, it's Kelly he DID get us to 12-0 and into the NC. He did have us in the top ten last year a few moments from the final four and (even though it is painful to watch) even when his teams are underperforming they stay in games. Would I like to have Urban? Or Harbaugh (well...)? Or Pete? Or Saban? Sure. Are they coming? No. So, this year, for me it came down to this: Is Fleck better, Schiano? (Fleck was the most interesting but I still think he needs to run a big time program for a couple of years, and yes, that may mean we lose him.) So, we have Kelly, coming off a season when he lost EVERYBODY (WR, CB, Safeties, Best Defensive Player in History, Most of his o-line, and LEADERS!) who is coming back with some real talent. JS has said he is coming back. Rather than yell into the storm, I was suggesting options for moving forward. Sue me. You can skip my posts if you like...
