holtz over leahy ?Rockne, Ara , Holtz and Hart.
coaches of ND? yes. BUT honestly there is a big drop off from Ara to Holtz and would not put him on there. These would also be my selections.
You gotta have Leahy on there.Rockne, Ara , Holtz and Hart.
Yeah you got me on this one. Leahy it is , screw Lou ! Not enough[or any] thought put into it by me before posting, except there should be a player, and as on old lineman an end who won the Heisman is my choice. You gotta have Leahy on there.
Rockne has to come first - since he was a great player at ND before he became a coach. The Army game of 1913 changed college football. Frankly Rockne vs Washington; Leahy vs TR; Gipp vs Lincoln; Lujack vs JeffersonWell Ara, you have to have Rock, Leahy, and Lujack in there. Now, the fourth spot is open for debate and you can't lose with either The Gipper, Moose Krause, or Ara. Irish football has had many great and legendary players but this has to be the best of the best. The cream. Coaches, players, administrators. It doesn't matter.
The real answer is that Irish football is so much bigger than the Presidency that we're gonna need another mountain! The fun thing about this thread is, there's no right or wrong answers.
is doing a mount rushmore of all the high profile college football programs. they have not done nd yet. who is on yours ?
mine: rockne, leahy, lujack and hornung.
This coming from a Michigan fan!davie, willingham, weis and kelly.....
I would locate it in Tora Bora.... or on Mount Vinson.....
He has to first win a NC to be mentioned with Coach Holtz, but he is a long way off from Rockne, Leahy and Ara. Kelly will get his NC!Coach Kelly has an excellent chance of being mention in the same vein as Ara, Leahy and Holtz before his time at Notre Dame is over and he will be doing so under much tougher circumstances given the overall parity in the sport.
There is no better coach for ND at the current time. Go Irish!

huh ? not even close as a receiver. kick returner ? i'll concede that.I won't argue with having the Rocket up there. Without question, the greatest WR in the history of ND football. Certainly, the only WR on it's Mt Rushmore.

fine. i prefer floyd, brown, gatewood and a few others as true wide receivers. We've been through this. Now you need to take it up with Lou Somogyi. I understand that you know more than him. It's just his opinion is vastly more relevant to me than yours.
There's only one WR on the Mt Rushmore for ND. And I agree with him completely.
Thanks to Ara for the earlier post.

rocket is not on somogyis list solely for his receiving skills. those were average. he's on their because of his versatility and game breaking abilities. dissect any way you want .We've been through this. 71 total receptions. an average route runner at best and just average hands. very good after the catch. his best skill as a receiver was his speed. SOLELY as a wide receiver he was nowhere being nd's best.I don't believe you're thinking clearly today. The evaluation of Rocket included in Lou's piece differs significantly from yours. Perhaps he and I are correct and your wrong? That's what is clearly happening in this case. Here is what Lou said of the Rocket.
He holds the school career records for yards per catch (22.0)
You need to lie down for a little while. Ask yourself why you think the WR with the record for yards per catch at ND is "average". I know when I'm looking for the greatest WR in ND history, I'm looking for a guy with speed, game breaking ability, and versatility. The Rocket.

71 receptions under Lou Holtz during mostly just two years is like a receiver catching 142 passes under Brian Kelly. Rocket was hands down the best wide receiver the Irish have had.route running, hands not important to you ?
route running, hands not important to you ?
yes, he had average wide receiver skills. by that i mean route running, hands , blocking. yes he was great AFTER the catch and as fast as anyone. that said he is never recalled solely as a great receiver because he wasn't one. he's recalled as a great offensive weapon mostly on his ability to break a game open returning kicks and his versatility. no one ever mentions him as a great receiver at notre dame like they did tim brown or mike floyd and many others. not so sure why that is difficult for you to comprehend. ismails legacy is firmly entrenched at notre dame but certainly not for his prowess as a wide receiver. if you are doing strict position analysis you would get that. maybe the library can help educate you.Your statement that Rocket had "average" skills on a ND message board, or any football board is ludicrous. I know you claim to coach football. If it is true and you are around kids, you need to retire. You're not the only idiot in the public school system, but you're an excellent example of the type of person that should not be teaching or coaching kids, but is very commonly found in the public school system. An excellent example of why I sent my kids to private school.
