is doing a mount rushmore of all the high profile college football programs. they have not done nd yet. who is on yours ?
mine: rockne, leahy, lujack and hornung.

Lazy, way-overdone idea from a major sports website that should know better. But it will generate comments

The designer of Mt Rushmore planned to use Wild West figures, and there's no real significance for the men sculpted. The idea of Mt Rushmore representing the four greatest figures is misleading, unless you rate TR higher than most others do

My NDMR is Ara, Tim Brown, Rocket and Tom Gatewood

Rockne, Leahy, Lujack, and the fourth name is debatable. Could be Lattner. Could be Holtz (one title and and missed another by a easy missed interception and a long FG). Could be Ara. Could be any number of difference makers from the 40s on up. But it has to be the best of the best.

when you think of 1964 and 1970 and how close Ara came to having 4 NC's Holtz pales in comparison. He won 1 and came this close to 2 others but they were all in a 5 year spread; Ara had ND at the top or near it virtually every year from 1964 to 1974.

You gotta have Leahy on there.
Yeah you got me on this one. Leahy it is , screw Lou ! Not enough[or any] thought put into it by me before posting, except there should be a player, and as on old lineman an end who won the Heisman is my choice.

Rockne and Leahy are two of the top ten greatest coaches to ever coach college football and so they have to be on there. look up leahy's stat sheet as the coach at nd in the time he was there and you'll see how great of a coach he was. he was the nick saban of his day while at nd

Sorry. There is no greatest player list or Mount Rushmore of top ND players if it doesn't have the name Johnny Lujack at the very top. The greatest of all Irish football players. Probably the greatest of all around Irish student/ athletes.

Well Ara, you have to have Rock, Leahy, and Lujack in there. Now, the fourth spot is open for debate and you can't lose with either The Gipper, Moose Krause, or Ara. Irish football has had many great and legendary players but this has to be the best of the best. The cream. Coaches, players, administrators. It doesn't matter.

Rockne has to come first - since he was a great player at ND before he became a coach. The Army game of 1913 changed college football. Frankly Rockne vs Washington; Leahy vs TR; Gipp vs Lincoln; Lujack vs Jefferson

davie, willingham, weis and kelly.....

I would locate it in Tora Bora.... or on Mount Vinson.....

Coach Kelly has an excellent chance of being mention in the same vein as Ara, Leahy and Holtz before his time at Notre Dame is over and he will be doing so under much tougher circumstances given the overall parity in the sport.

There is no better coach for ND at the current time. Go Irish!

He has to first win a NC to be mentioned with Coach Holtz, but he is a long way off from Rockne, Leahy and Ara. Kelly will get his NC!

I won't argue with having the Rocket up there. Without question, the greatest WR in the history of ND football. Certainly, the only WR on it's Mt Rushmore.

huh ? not even close as a receiver. kick returner ? i'll concede that.

We've been through this. Now you need to take it up with Lou Somogyi. I understand that you know more than him. It's just his opinion is vastly more relevant to me than yours.

There's only one WR on the Mt Rushmore for ND. And I agree with him completely.

Thanks to Ara for the earlier post.

rocket is not on somogyis list solely for his receiving skills. those were average. he's on their because of his versatility and game breaking abilities. dissect any way you want .

rocket receiving skills is average

I don't believe you're thinking clearly today. The evaluation of Rocket included in Lou's piece differs significantly from yours. Perhaps he and I are correct and your wrong? That's what is clearly happening in this case. Here is what Lou said of the Rocket.

He holds the school career records for yards per catch (22.0)

You need to lie down for a little while. Ask yourself why you think the WR with the record for yards per catch at ND is "average". I know when I'm looking for the greatest WR in ND history, I'm looking for a guy with speed, game breaking ability, and versatility. The Rocket.

Layden, the fastest of the quartet, became the Irish defensive star with his timely interceptions and handled the punting chores. The 6-foot, 162-pounder

ND again with the 3 star talent. Even then they couldn't really get the "elite" players many on this board would like to see.

71 total receptions. an average route runner at best and just average hands. very good after the catch. his best skill as a receiver was his speed. SOLELY as a wide receiver he was nowhere being nd's best.

route running, hands not important to you ?

71 receptions under Lou Holtz during mostly just two years is like a receiver catching 142 passes under Brian Kelly. Rocket was hands down the best wide receiver the Irish have had.
Who cares how he runs routes he got open and got lots of yards.
Here is the rocket catching a TD pass from Troy Aikman when he was a Cowboy;
Enjoy everyone. The rocket gets wide open for a 76 yard TD to beat the Redskins in OT !!

Your statement that Rocket had "average" skills on a ND message board, or any football board is ludicrous. I know you claim to coach football. If it is true and you are around kids, you need to retire. You're not the only idiot in the public school system, but you're an excellent example of the type of person that should not be teaching or coaching kids, but is very commonly found in the public school system. An excellent example of why I sent my kids to private school.

yes, he had average wide receiver skills. by that i mean route running, hands , blocking. yes he was great AFTER the catch and as fast as anyone. that said he is never recalled solely as a great receiver because he wasn't one. he's recalled as a great offensive weapon mostly on his ability to break a game open returning kicks and his versatility. no one ever mentions him as a great receiver at notre dame like they did tim brown or mike floyd and many others. not so sure why that is difficult for you to comprehend. ismails legacy is firmly entrenched at notre dame but certainly not for his prowess as a wide receiver. if you are doing strict position analysis you would get that. maybe the library can help educate you.

Rocket was a nominee for the College HOF. I wanted to see if he was listed as an "athlete" or a WR and they have him listed as WR. Probably doesn't mean much because Rocket was as a versatile and dangerous weapon whenever he was on the field as anybody in college football history. The '91 Orange Bowl still haunts me.We was was robbed by yet another official who wanted to be part of the game . Still, during my lifetime, I don't know what play crushed me more as an Irish fan. Rocket's punt return called back. Fourth and nine. 1964 USC game in which a Fertig to Sherman TD pass with a minute and change destroyed Ara's title hopes in his first year. The last 30 seconds of the 2015 Stanford game. '93 BC game. That's a lot to take in. The '64 USC game sealed my fate towards my dislike for all things USC and there is no turning back.
