Can't wait to see how big the advertisements will be on the jumbotron

Since people on here swore there was no chance there would be a jumbotron at all, and also said if there was one, it would be 'nothing but the shell game, and a bunch of advertisements'

Wonder if people will give up their season tickets over it.

I don't remember anyone saying that the stadium would never have a jumbo, but, I do remember all the debates , pro and con, about having one. Same thing with turf vs natural grass. Same argument when TD Jesus was blocked by the stadium expansion. In the end, we can debate from here till eternity but the administration isn't listening and they don't care what we think. When they decide, it's a done deal. I'm sure fans argued about the move from Cartier to the stadium.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the fact that the school forges on into the future without regard for the whining of dried up, crusty old farts desperately clinging to yesteryear at our own peril.

Long live Captain Jack Swarbrick.
This team wouldn't have survived an afternoon with Bob Golic.
As for forging into the future....the stories of ND alum other families that have had season tickets for decades, half a century or more and are giving them up continues too expand......
Jenkins is a plagiarizing secularist...... Take a look at Doak stadium and tell me how original his "dream" is..... Much like your post the whole thing smacks of Caddyshack II..... Maybe Jenkins .... others can change the color of the Dome next....

One of these days you will be a crust old fart with very few of the memories use old farts have of the glory days you will most likely never see.

He does speak for the intention of the school administration. I would have cashed in that gold mine years ago. The school intention has always been, no advertisements inside ND Stadium.

I also remember when ND signed the contract with NBC. The announced intention was that the fans would have a uniform starting time for all games. So much for that idea.

Is a marriage proposal the same as a kiss cam?

Just asking in case someone manages to get their marriage proposal on the screen is the people in this thread that hate game day technology more modern than the typewriter will throw a fit about it

No one I know of "hates technology more modern than the typewriter." Stop with the straw man argument. There are legitimate reasons why some people are not in favor of a jumbotron.

What are those reasons 78? I want so much more that it would make most people's head spin and explored from overload. I would expect Coach Rockne would be disappointed if he were to walk into ND Stadium today. He was the master of innovation and thinking big. The administration and some fans stand in the way of expanding the tradition that he and Jesse Harper began at ND. Rock thought so big that when the Big 10 turned it's back on ND, that he took ND Football into the fiber of American Society. He made ND America's team long before there was even thoughts of a Dallas Cowboys. Hail in the anchor people, and let the tradition thrive. It has been held back long enough by people who fear change.

Having a jumbotron is not innovative at all since everyone else has one. I am personally opposed to a jumbotron because it directs people's attention away from the field. Instead of watching the actual players run plays, you watch instead on the jumbotron.
It also detracts from the the ND band, which is a quintessential element of the ND gameday experience. The piped in music already does this. A jumbotron would be even worse.
I have been to a lot of CFB stadiums, and to my observation, when a school has a jumbotron, it seems that the powers that be think it must be in constant use. So in addition to ads, which I think are inevitable, they are used for cheerleading, stupid contests, i.e., which helmet is the football under, etc., etc., etc.

Here's my thing. This is the thinking that ruled college football when you were still flagged for the crowd making too much noise (which is still the single stupidest flag I have ever of).

As Ara has said. College football should be LOUD, it should be distractive, it should keep the opponent on their heels from the moment they walk out of the tunnel. It should strike at their being to keep them off guard. And if ND isn't doing everything that every other school is doing to that cause, then shame on ND for it.

I don't mean breaking rules or crap like that. I mean honest competition. If a fan can't manage to look at the field instead of looking at the jumbotron. That's on them. they paid to be there, let them do what they want during the game experience. When I am at the stadium, I tweet during games, I check other scores, hell I log into Rivals and moderate the soundoff board. But that is my choice to do so. And when I am not doing those things I yell, scream, jump up and down, hollar, and carry on as much as possible.

I think it is insane that ND doesn't have the same level of technology that many other's did in the 90's, and 00's. Let alone 2016.

Eveer wonder why we got a flag with 59,075 in the stands and we cannot create that noise level with 80,000+ in the stands? There was no jumbotron, piped in music or anything of that nature in 1988.

78: you ought to be sitting by me next to the student section pre-game. Someone had the brilliant idea of hiring a Deejay who blasts hippity hop music to the extreme. You can't even hear the guy talking sitting 8" away and I defy anyone to give me one solid reason how that stupidity contributes to the game day atmosphere or helps the team in any way. It's manufactured noise and I promise you if Mrs Jack S was sitting in that section, that Deejay would have been history long ago.

The old blue hairs need to snort some smelling salts and get wild @!!

Because its not a flag anymore. That's why it isn't flagged anymore. And in most places it is common for the home crowd to be loud.

It is a rule during the play no piped in music is allowed. And neither is the band allowed to play.

Times change. So do rules and expectations.

The point is that the crowd now is nowhere near as loud as it was then.

Prove it. Seriously. Prove that it isn't as loud now as it was then.

I was in the stands for the 88 Michigan game. And I would argue that games like 05 USC, 12 Stanford, and others were louder.

Again the only difference is that every stadium has learned louder is better. And many stadiums have taken steps to specifically trap sound in the stadium. Something that wasn't even considered until the 80's and later

Here here! However, we shouldn't portray all old farts as narrow-minded clingers because of two or three loud individuals who have a lot of time on their hands.

So says this alleged ND fan.

Well, for the most part, ND does have a consistent starting time, 3:30 EST. However, as a sign of the times, more and more games are going to prime time across the landscape. In an effort to compete (and recruiting has an impact here), ND now has 1-2 games in prime time.

Overall, this (game times), and the addition of the video board (BTW -- there will be no replays shown, unless it is an ND big play or something), and a few other wrinkles the administration has allowed to happen, it has made the game experience a little more enjoyable, and has allowed ND to stay current with the new trends, but still keep in place its identity.

Question: why do you say there will be no replays shown? Was there an announcement?

BTW, ND had two night games last year and two this year. Having one third of your games at night is not a consistent starting time, to my way of thinking.

I thought I had read in one of Jack's earlier announcements of the video board that plays under review would not be replayed on the screen.

On game time consistency -- recently, over the last few years, the big-name matchups are moving to prime time. This year, and probably moving forward, you can almost look at the schedule and determine when the night games will be (most will be early to mid-season matchups). So, yea -- you will consistently see prime time starting times going forward.

Yup. The quality opponents will almost all be night games. And those of us who like attending day games will get a steady diet of Navy, Wake Forest, Duke, etc.

will the jumbotron be ready for this season. someone on another board posted an updated picture of the stadium from inside and it looks to almost done except for having the screen on. the question is being asked on twitter and other places about if it can be used this year or not

No -- will be ready for the beginning of the 2017 season

All notes I have say 2017.

My father in law is one of the senior electrical workers on site. And the bilk of the crews aren't working that building right now. So I would doubt it

I'm not a fan of all the distractions myself, but if you are going to have a screen, shouldn't it show replays of just those sorts of plays? You have to sit through it long enough in the stands, you should at least be able to see what they are considering.

HDK -- I could be wrong, but I can swear that I read that somewhere. I know there are a lot of college stadiums that do not replay those types of plays (unlike the NFL which shows everything).

Logic would dictate what you said -- however, sometimes logic gets lost in reality.
