I had NO doubt once this went into OT that there was NO way the defense could win the game. I guess we'll have to score 60 a game to expect to win. Just makes me sick.

That was an insulting display of team defense. The hire was a head scratcher back in 2014 if you look at his one year at Auburn before getting fired. It potentially cost ND a title in 2015 to bring BVG back. And it's borderline malpractice by Kelly to give him a third season.

I was never on the Fire Van Gorder wagon, that is until tonight. Running 3 man fronts when a team is gashing you up the middle is beyond ridiculous.
This guy is the worst! At some point the D has to improve and it has only gotten worse under BVG!! Redfield being gone is NOT an excuse. He was always underwhelming as a player anyway.

I totally disagree. I like Zaire. We had a chance to put the game away and Kizer got sacked. Kelly went conservative and got burned. Fundamentals on defense don't exist.

Kiser had 5 TD's what else could he do? This game was lost on defense period. Had our defense stopped them just once in the fourth quarter the game was over.
I too knew it was over when BK decides to play it safe. I couldn't believe he played for the tie.
I was commenting to the poster that said if it were not for using a 2 QB system we most likely would have won. I like Zaire and acknowledge the D is average at best. It's not a talent issue.
This defense was Weisesque. They literally do nothing well. They don't pursue, they don't tackle, they don't rush the passer, they don't cover, they can't play man or zone.
It was a disgraceful effort and an embarrassing performance. I think BVG should be let go tomorrow. Simplify the defense and get everyone into position and play with some pride and effort.

And do what? Sing kumbya? No, this is the same BVG defense just less some talent. He doesn't coach well, he recruits mediocre. BK is going to seriously have to look at making a change after this season. This defense is not getting better, it's getting worse.
BVG should not be allowed back to South Bend after this one. Leave him at the airport like USC did to Lane.

I've always been a Kelly fan, but the fact he couldn't recognize that BVG is an awful fit, makes me wonder.

Did you practice that this summer and in fall camp?
2) Safeties seem to not have much over the top depth- why?
3) Red Zone- defense??
4) how many 70 yard TD drives has a BVG defense allowed in 3 years.
Do we need to see more? Or are we waiting for the guys to understand something.
5) Did Cole Luke tell you he caught the pass and made you challenge it?
You did exchange words and he was jumping around like he caught it
6) how come we didn't challenge Hunters play? Is Stevie Wonder up stairs working the monitors.

Hunter was a defenseless player. It probably should have been called. Still, we still gave up over 50 to a slightly above average Big 12 team. Disgusting!

In this gm the DB s were getting burned from the get go anytime TX wanted to go over top time and again.... ND got gifted by Texas drops and near missed connections for TDS early in the game and instead of adjusting and going to a Zone coverage. They stick with it until TX has 31 pts up early in the 3rd. It's a f.....g great scheme after all . Players just need to understand it and their responsibilities. I've had my fill of hearing that BS from Kelly. Kelly is on quite the roll. Three game losing streak. In a sense it's almost four, because that Boston College game was so ugly. And our defense makes intramural flag football teams look fundamentally sound.
BVG goes nowhere. He is Kelly's hand picked guy. He goes when BK does. Which, given his extension, is MANY seasons from now. As BK said after Tulsa: The fans had better get used to it. This includes BVG.
Secondary is horrible. They don't even look for the ball. How can you hope to break up a pass when you don't even know where the damn ball is ? And the tackling is very poor. BVG should not have been brought back. This defense will continue to be a problem all year.
7) Do you practice bumping/jamming the opponents WRs in practice when working on man coverage?
That's what got me on one of the bombs. The CB was up on the line and didn't jam the receiver. The receiver just ran right past him in the first three yards and was gone.
They don't jam @ the line!! CANNOT play man coverage without jamming...unless your Deion Sanders!
