Had high hopes for him coming out of high school. A linebacker that had the speed and athleticism to play WR. Good thing he came to ND to get that top notch education.

What happened?

The injury list starts with defensive lineman Doug Randolph, a 6-foot-2, 255-pounder who was entering his senior season. Kelly said that Randolph, who was a four-star prospect out of high school and appeared in all 13 games in 2015 as a reserve defensive end, will be forced to give up football because of an injury.

"Doug is not cleared for competition, so his career is over here," Kelly said. "He will be a student assistant. He has had a spondylosis -- I guess the specific is a narrowing of the spine essentially. I don't want to get into the specifics because I don't want to pronounce them wrong, but he has not been cleared. He will be a student assistant for us, similar to the role that Tony Springmann had for us. He'll assist with the defensive line."
