Look....It is way too early to worry about such things but looking at Jerry Palm's Bowl Projections how is it even possible to realistically think Ohio State and Penn State end up ranked #2 and #3?

They play each other soon....if Ohio State loses that is two losses...no Big Ten Championship game unless something crazy happens.

If Penn State loses they will not play in the Big Ten Championship game assuming Ohio State would hold the tie breaker. I am assuming both teams win out over Michigan and Michigan State which is no guarantee either.

I just do not see how this is even a possibility.

His projection of the irish without saying it is 7-5 or 8-4. So we would go 3-3 based on that .

it is doing what it was meant to do -- generate discussion! The "Playoff" polls done weekly are useless until we get to weeks 11 - 12 - 13 -- when it matters. Until then, too much football left to be played.

Any ND loss will eliminate ND from playoff contention. It may also push ND out of a major type bowl.
A major bowl W would seem to be a must to consider it a good season and to keep Bodi free to roam in public.

Unless you make the playoff the rest of the bowls are meaningless.

If ND goes 10-2 they will be in a major bowl, guaranteed. ND’s SOS will be top 10 in the country & at 10-2 they will be a top 10 team.

Not to mention $ ND generates at major bowls. All the major bowls would fight over a 10 win ND team.

I saw that today and asked myself, "what is that guy smoking?" PSU is the most over rated team in the country (miracle win over Iowa...nuff said). OSU is good but should be more penalized for getting SPANKED by OU...at home no less.

$ and exposure are very different for different bowls. You want to play the highest ranked opponent you can.
The opponent means much more to me than the date and location. Playing lsu in the music City bowl was better for me than say playing a Memphis or usf in the capital one bowl.

So if you played in a bowl without National Title implications before the college football playoff .... which would've been all but one 99% of the time and maybe 2 the other 1% .... those bowls meant something then that they do not now? .....

Echo...I understand why you and others here hold this opinion. I disagree, and think there is value in playing and winning non playoff bowl games, and the value is in direct relation to the ranking and quality of the opponent. The value lies in getting added playing time and prep time for returning players, the reward and excitement for the players, continued entertainment for the fan base, and positive impact on the ND brand in the eyes of recruits. A win over Ohio State, for example, would have been huge for the ND football program and it’s followers. Given the circumstances, even the win over LSU was a much needed boost for the program and fans, etc... by the same token, the less desirable the bowl, the less desirable the opponent, and the benefits dissipate accordingly.

in the big picture they are meaningless. there are certainly things to be gained. extra practice time the most important. you're comparing apples and oranges.

don't disagree. i was speaking of the importance of the actual game itself. i'm all for the extra practice time and the like. as i posted earlier the quality of opponent means much more to me than than the date and location. i'd much rather face a quality 3 loss team from a good conference than an undefeated or one loss team from a non power 5.

The importance of a specific bowl game and the value of winning a specific bowl game is different for every team. That's why you see some teams effectively not show up for a bowl game, and other teams play like its their super bowl.

Pointing out that bowl games that are not part of the playoff is meaningless ..... this is how it has always been

People measure success in cfb with major bowls, just as they do final fours in bball.

Some people think in simple terms of made playoffs, made non playoff bowl, & did not make a bowl game. But within the teams that made bowl games but not selected for the four playoff slots, you have a range between 5-7 and 12-1 records. Preeeeety big difference between making the Rose Bowl and the Heart Of Dallas Bowl. They are decidedly NOT "all the same".

People that get mad about playing in "lesser" bowl game aren't mad about the bowl game. They're mad that the season didn't go the way they wanted. Has nothing to do with actually participating in the bowl game.
