Same thing happened when they hired Faust and Davie. When ND does well, the Administration thinks the success is due to the Notre Dame infrastructure and not the head coach. And they end up with egg on their face. Rinse, wash, repeat.
I don’t know how seriously it was considered, but the timing of Kelly’s resignation introduced the option of an interim HC.
Rather than make a more permanent decision when the timing limited your choices, I would have selected an interim coach, then waited for the proper time to search for a highly qualified HC.
WHY rush to select a long term HC when the field of candidates was so limited ?
