BK Laughing………

Swarbrick wanted the control and the glory of identifying someone off the radar to put ND over the top.

Same thing happened when they hired Faust and Davie. When ND does well, the Administration thinks the success is due to the Notre Dame infrastructure and not the head coach. And they end up with egg on their face. Rinse, wash, repeat.
It’s not quite the same, the timing of Kelly’s departure put ND in a terrible position.

I don’t know how seriously it was considered, but the timing of Kelly’s resignation introduced the option of an interim HC.

Rather than make a more permanent decision when the timing limited your choices, I would have selected an interim coach, then waited for the proper time to search for a highly qualified HC.

WHY rush to select a long term HC when the field of candidates was so limited ?

And if you think that this decision was solely JS’s you don‘t know how ND functions

Losing to a 20 point dog just is not good at all. The adjustments where just not there at all. “This time it’s gonna work”. TR has to worry about the next play, not the play called. He has to be looking at what they are doing. Coaches don’t send people into space, this just is not that hard. The way those corners were sitting on routs do a double move. Run a option and have all turn done field for a throw. Short yardage for deep and get a receiver to make a play. Run a screen on 3rd and 7. You have to break your tendency. The OL and DL is pathetic. Maybe the game has passed Harry and the new DL coach is Aweful.

Freeman is approaching this like a CEO. Good coaches are more like COO’s. He has got to take over the D calls if Al is not doing it. He has to tell TR what to run if TR is failing.

He will look back and say I should have very soon if these coaches can’t produce results.

That's the whole point and you are making it. It's the same players who BK recruited that, UNDER BK, went 11-1 in 2021 (the second loss last year came after he left), 10-2 in '20, 11-2 in '19, 12-1 in '18 and 10-3 in '17. Suddenly BK is gone and they are now 0-3. I won't say he definitely gets the win at OSU, but I do believe he would have beaten Ok St (I blame a lot of that loss on the disarray around his leaving) and he most definitely would not have lost to Marshall.

Did the Irish underperform ? Of course they did! But you are blaming the coach who isn't here to coach them by saying he is the one who recruited them. And those same players won a shitload of games and got to Playoffs under him.
Maybe he knew this was going to be a tough year given the personnel he had. Forget the recruiting rankings for a minute. I am assuming you watched the first 2 games. Who on offense jumps out at you and you think “ wow! That player is awesome.” I can’t think of one. Mayer is their best player on the offense. Buchner ? he was a 4 star , right ? What’s your take on him? Receivers ? Any difference makers there ? Same with the running backs. Offensive line? They weren’t to good last year either. Kelly also lost to plenty of “ inferior “ teams over the last 12 years. My opinion on yesterdays game is this. MF clearly is learning. He is responsible as the head coach for the 0-3 start. However, in my humble opinion, Marshall had better pls and were better coached. I think if Kelly were still here they would be 0-2 as well. Did anyone think Cincinnati was better than ND? They came into ND stadium and won with Kelly on the sidelines. It wasn’t a fluke. They were better . Yet Kelly had top ten classes on the roster.

this is all I’m going say. If Kelly is on the sidelines yesterday, they still lose. Marshall was the better team. Period. ND was outplayed and overmatched. Marshall pushed them around. MF bears responsibility. He is the head coach. But the players he has to work with on offense are nothing special. I believe Kelly knew this was going to be a tough year given the personnel he had . We can sit here and go on and on about playoffs and ten win seasons. After watching the first two games , one thing is clear. ND lacks playmakers on offense and all the coaching in the world can’t fix that. They need to recruit better . The first place would be the QB position. Anyway, it’s all good. I want nothing more than the Irish to be great. I know you do as well. So even though we have different points of view, we are still pulling for the Irish. Hang in there, hopefully things will get better. Go Irish !!

BK back to beating patsies and losing to real competition: 1:1 He has nothing to laugh about; he is something to laugh about!

I think what this team needs is for MF to be even less hands-on. WTF is he going to do exactly?? Just swing into action, and start delegating orders right and left and just whipping this sorry-ass crew into shape? Something like that?

This is not some feel-good movie, and just because MF has movie-star good looks, doesn't mean he's just going to all of a sudden start handling shit like we're operating off a damn screenplay. This team could quite frankly be better off if Al Golden took over as HC, and MF went back to DC, which is where he should still be coaching right now. The last thing this overwhelmed coach needs to be doing is unproductively micromanaging and asserting himself even more, to no particular ends....

He needs to get with his two lieutenants and, very realistically, develop some kind of practical vision for how this team can be competitive, and simply move the ball against the likes of Cal and Stanford and UNLV... and do it quick. Obviously his head has been in the effin' clouds this entire time, which is what I was afraid of. And this team is obviously unprepared and not ready to field a competitive side regardless of the competition. And what's worse it appears they had no idea they were going to suck this bad.

I disagree.

Let’s not forget that ND played for the National Championdhip several times.

Let’s not also forget that ND is at a big disadvantage due to more strident academic standards.

Notre Dame somehow manages to repeatedly hire coaches with absolutely NO PRIOR head coaching experience with disastrous results.

WHY ?

WHY continue to hire inexperienced, unproven assistant coaches ?

How stupid can you get ?
Hmmm... Maybe Notre Dame should apply those stringent academic standards to the people it hires in administrative roles.

A few comments from an (almost) outsider. Get a grip. There is no program that has more upside than ND. You have a bottomless pit of intangible value that can be accessed by the right person. But it's hard to find the right person when the only tangible goal of the fan base is the national championship.

For all his (many) faults, when Jimbo Fisher came to FSU, he clearly laid out the "ladder of success". First, you beat your rivals. Then you win your conference division. You play in the conference championship. Then you win the conference championship. Then you get into the playoffs....etc. etc. etc. Each milestone win is essential to focus on the ultimate goal.

At ND, you measure your success only by winning a national championship. And back in 1988, (when you won it), there were lots of independent teams. Penn State won two natties in the 1980's as an independent. Miami won three in the 1980's as an independent.

You are making it too hard on your head coaches. Yes...BK did get into a couple of playoffs. So...you have shown success while maintaining independent status. And to be fair, many FSU fans miss being an independent. But the world has changed. And it's changing more into a conference dominated sport.

I don't know if Freeman is the right guy. And no one will know for a few years. Give the guy a chance and deal with it. Maybe the search for a new coach was too short and too limited. But he was an ND coach when he got promoted. It's not like you hired Willie Taggart after a 5 minute phone call like some school I know. Dabo was not even a coordinator when Clemson promoted him to head coach. But the recruits and players really responded to him. It was a gutsy move by Clemson.

The sport is better when ND is in the mix.

Pat, glad to see you back on the forum the last few days. Hope all is well.

Really ? Every player on that field was his except for the safety from Northwestern. Top 10 as you say. Did you watch the game?. According to everyone leading up to the game on this board ( except me) said ND was going to kill Marshall. Marshall had the better players. You disagree ? Fine. You can. I know what I saw. ND didn’t lose by some fluke. They were outplayed. Kelly’s top ten class ( sarcasm) lost to an inferior opponent. I guess Marshall didn’t get that memo. NDs players are grossly overrated. I am speaking on today’s game only. Recruiting rankings be dammed. Marshall was clearly the better team on that field. That’s a fact. And they proved it.
MARSHALL WAS THE BETTER TEAM.

The RB, I'm told, was a 5-STAR.

The portal could very well KILL ND.

Good players who've been waiting their turn will now play for SOMEONE. A lot of those players will play on teams that play ND. Think about the possibility of an ND program struggling to go .500 as was the case in the mid-50's to early 60's. A distinct possibility.

ND's at a CROSSROADS if transfers remain UNRESTRICTED.

Get a grip, huh? That means a lot coming from a FSU fan. Just because you've gotten used to sucking forever indefinitely, even though you guys are effin' Florida St. and you used to be the kings of CFB, doesn't mean ND is willing to acquiesce quite as limply.

Seriously, a FSU fan telling some other blue blood program and its fans to resign itself quietly to its fate and just slide into mediocrity and irrelevance without a peep.....

You'll excuse me if an FSU fan's counsel at a time like this is something I'm going to pointedly disregard....
