It's helpful to be in the south as all the southern schools clearly show. tOSU before Urban was not the recruiting juggernaut that it is today. The only thing this discussion shows is what a mediocre recruiter, or as I really believe, what a terrible closer Kelly is and how important the staff will be in improving the overall job of preparing and coaching this team going forward. Last years team was the best coached team of Coach 8 & 4's tenure. I do not believe Coach 8 & 4 had a lot to do with it, he finally assembled a staff that communicates and motivates the players. As a coach (coach only) cgvr is right - Kelly stinks. BUT, a good staff can make up for a lot and make a mediocre guy look very good (even recruiting).
Whoever calls the plays needs to keep the pressure ,seems we Yale foot off the pedal.
Reality check .Many 3- 4 star players become big time stars in college . At Notre Dame , T.Eifert, G.Tate ,T.Riidick ,C.Watt , Z.Martin,N. Martin ,H. Smith ,W.Fuller, Prosise,Day,and I think R. Stanley were only 3-4 high school players ,but yet some became big time players in the pros. Fuller, N. Martin, R. Stanley , Russell, Day ,Prosise may also be become top notch pros. Did not include Te'o or J. Smith because they were 5s in high school.. Did I miss anybody in last 5 years?
Some players really develop in their 3 or 4 years in college . Kelly does a great job in getting players ready .

My point exactly. The poster at issue does nothing but criticize Kelly. But when called upon to name someone who would do better (as I and others have repeatedly done), he is strangely silent.

whatever the problems are they are not the head coach; location and institutional priorities are more a factor in the limitations on current football fortunes.

The reason is that the guy is really Brian Davidson, our resident ND-obsessed Indiana alum.
ND has a senior 5-star safety that may lose his job to a freshman this year because he plays with deer-in-the-headlights look in his eyes. BK has compared him to an orange cone. Give me a 3 or 4-star baller all day long.

Incredible children here. Still say, last years team was the best coached, best prepared of all the teams Kelly has had, just don't think it was him as it was the coaching staff really contributed. Now if they can shut off his mike during the game and let someone else call the plays...
Gerry Faust. Bob Davie. Charlie Weis. What do all of them have in common? ND was the first HC position for all of them. Some people never learn.

you are correct, my bad. you did mention sanford. 99.9% of your posts are uneducated, hate-filled, mindless drivel and i generally just skim over them so i did miss it. that said i'm not sure if the powers that be would hire another person without head coaching experience. if sanford would stay under the excellent tutelage of brian kelly for say another 5 or 6 years that might change.

What is does not validate is how good of a coach Kelly is, what all he has had to deal with in his time at ND (injuries, suspensions, people leaving early, the de-commitments at the last minute -- yes, other teams have these, but over the past 6 years, not to the extent that ND has had), and his recruiting efforts.

The AD, President of school etc needs to be fired if they even consider hiring a head coach without extensive head coaching experience.
Max Redfield will play in the pros. His career has been held back at ND for discipline reasons I am guessing. He is definitely very talented and he should be starting in front of any freshman which is my opinion.
Does he play another sport? He won't play in the NFL.
I hope he plays well next year but let's get real. Safety play was abhorrent last year.
I am hoping Studstil is the starter.
