No. 13 ND Hockey Makes Dramatic Rally To Defeat No. 20 ASU, 5-4

Head coach Jeff Jackson Conference
Trailing 4-2, the Irish scored three goals in the final 8:38 — the last with five seconds remaining — to stun the Sun Devils on Friday night at the Compton Family Ice Arena.

Goals by Jake Pivonka, Solag Bakich and then the final one by Nick Leivermann to beat the clock ended the back-and-forth action in which the Irish raced to a 2-0 lead, ASU answered with four straight, and then ND closed with a furious run. A total of 18 goals were tallied in this series, with ASU winning the first game the previous night, 6-3.

Pivonka finished with a goal and an assist and Max Ellis added a pair of assists while Alex Steeves and Landon Slaggert (first of his career) also scored for Notre Dame. Arizona State’s Matthew Kopperud had two goals and an assist to pace the Sun Devils.

Notre Dame outshot Arizona State, 47-37, with Dylan St. Cyr making 33 saves in the win and ASU’s Cole Brady stopping 42 shots.

Arizona State was 1-for-4 on the power play, while Notre Dame was 0-for-1.

The Fighting Irish will remain home to play host to No. 13/14 Ohio State next weekend in the first of back-to-back Saturday/Sunday Big Ten series.

Game one against the Buckeyes will be at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12 (NBCSN & TSN.ca), while Sunday’s contest on Dec. 13 will begin at 5 p.m. (NBCSN & TSN.ca).

Recruiting Lucky Charms: New FutureCast Pick In For Notre Dame

Here are tonight's Lucky Charms...

*** Let me start by saying this is a projection pick. My sources feel good about where the Irish stand in the recruitment of Las Vegas Bishop Gorman class of 2022 offensive tackle Jake Taylor, but nothing is imminent and he hasn't visited campus yet. It's tough to make picks on 2022 recruits considering the dead period is extended through April 2021, but I could see Taylor taking a self-guided tour visit of Notre Dame in the near future. Ever since the Irish offered him in October, the conversations between his family and Jeff Quinn have been very good.

*** Oklahoma is a threat here and he loved his visit to Norman in late November. I believe he was able to attend their game against Baylor as well. Clemson looms here but hasn't offered yet. From what I've gathered, the academic piece is so important to Taylor and his family. My sources on the Irish side of things feel very optimistic about where Notre Dame stands, and I feel like Quinn and Co. will eventually win out on this recruitment.

*** USC had had an interesting week on the recruiting front. One-time Notre Dame rover target Josh Moore from Atlanta Marist (Kyle Hamilton's high school) was apparently dropped by USC in favor of four-star Kyron Ware-Hudson. USC was recruiting Moore as a wide receiver, but apparently they're still in the market for another, and Titus Mokiao-Atimalala is at the top of the wishlist. Speaking of Mokiao-Atimalala, he plans to announce his top six schools list tomorrow, and it's likely that Notre Dame makes the cut. He also posted on his Twitter page today that he will skip the early signing period and sign in February, which is no surprise considering he told me that would be the case last month. My sources on the ND side of things feel very pessimistic about winning this recruitment. I expect TMA to stay out west.

*** Los Gatos (Calif.) High defensive and and class of 2021 Notre Dame commit Will Schweitzer tells me that he will be enrolling early at Notre Dame. He was previously on the fence about it before as he weighed playing his senior season versus enrolling early. But he's locked in to get to Notre Dame in February.

*** As far as Blake Fisher is concerned, I truly do not know why he removed Notre Dame affiliation from his social media bios which created the Irish fandom to lose its minds for a couple of hours. Maybe it was nothing; maybe it was something. But I've heard from several people, including one source on the Notre Dame side, who told me that Fisher will sign with Notre Dame in December and enroll early. So I think we can just put that whole thing to bed.

December 5: This Day In Notre Dame History

Today will be only the fourth game played on this date, and the first in 67 years. The Irish are 1-0-2:

Bronze Medal, 1936: In a series tied 5-5, Notre Dame and USC have their first tie, 13-13 — even though the Irish pick up 18 first downs in this game compared to USC's one. But the Trojans score at home on a 100-yard interception return. This also is the first year the AP poll is used weekly, and the 6-2-1 Irish finish No. 8.

Silver Medal, 1942: Just like in 1936, this season finale versus Great Lakes Naval Base — a World War II team — ends with a 13-13 tie, this time at Chicago's Soldier Field. The Irish miss a field goal on the game's final play, but rally from a 13-0 deficit on an 82-yard TD run by Cornie Clatt and a 68-yard jaunt by Creighton Miller, both in the third quarter. Despite not winning four of their 11 games (7-2-2), the Irish finish No. 6.

Gold Medal, 1953: In his final game as Notre Dame's head coach, Frank Leahy sees his Irish romp past SMU, 40-14, and he is carried off the field by his players. Senior fullback Neil Worden scores three times and Heisman winner Johnny Lattner twice, while Frank Varrichione falls on a fumble in the end zone.
Leahy's Irish finish No. 2 with a 9-0-1 record — his sixth unbeaten season in 11 years with the Fighting Irish, and seventh overall in 13 (he was 11-0 at Boston College his final season). Leahy produces an 87-11-9 mark at Notre Dame with four national titles, and his 107-13-9 career record is almost identical to the one his mentor produced in 13 years as well at Notre Dame from 1918-30: 105-12-5. Rockne and Leahy remain 1-2 on the all-time FBS winning percentage list.

DAILY COVID-19 THREAD: Saturday, December 5

• All thoughts on COVID, statistics, speculation, updates, etc. should be posted in the daily thread.

• COVID threads that pop up separately on the board will be merged into our daily thread — with the exception of sports news items that are related to COVID (school testing updates, announcements, etc.). These can have their own threads but our staff has final discretion.

• As always, political posts – whether in the COVID thread or not – will be deleted.

No bad news on Notre Dame's end continues on football — no positive tests this week through Wednesday — but men's basketball already has had two games cancelled this week because of player shortage for the opposition.

Over the last three weeks, nearly 60 FBS games have been cancelled.
