Basketball MBB: Notes on Division II Player of the Year RJ Sunahara

Notre Dame men's basketball is looking to fill out its roster for 2023-24 and the Irish staff have shown interesting former Division II Player of the Year RJ Sunahara.

Sunahara has one year of eligibility remaining after spending four seasons at Nova Southeastern. He technically only played three seasons for the Sharks due to the 2020-21 season being canceled for COVID-19. He also redshirted his freshman season at Fairmont State under current Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla in 2018-19.

In his three seasons at Nova Southeastern the 6-foot-8, 210-pound forward scored 1,579 career points (No. 2 in school history) and started all 92 games. He finished with career averages of 17.2 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. He's a 38% shooter from the 3-point line and the all-time leader in blocks for the Sharks with 172.

The Bay Village (Ohio) Bay High native won the NABC Divison II Player of the Year award last season after helping the Sharks to a 36-0 record and Division II national championship. He was also named the Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year.

Sunahara entered the transfer portal last Friday and communicated with head coach Micah Shrewsberry and associate head coach Kyle Getter last weekend.

"I got a direct message from Coach Getter on Twitter and from there got in contact over the phone with him and Coach Shrewsberry," Sunahara told Inside ND Sports. "I think the thing I liked most about the staff is that they seem to really care about making their players better on and off the court."

Sunahara said he's heard from over 20 schools including Notre Dame, Georgia, Loyola Chicago, VCU and West Virginia. Sunahara said he's prioritizing play style, coaches, teammates and immediate playing time in his recruitment.

He said he plans to speak with Getter over the phone today and schedule a visit to Notre Dame. He wants to make a decision soon.

"Notre Dame is such a storied program and they are high on my list," Sunahara said.

MLAX: No. 3 Virginia takes down No. 1 Notre Dame again

Virginia proved to be the kryptonite for Notre Dame men's lacrosse once again Sunday.

The No. 3 Cavaliers used a third quarter surge to pull away from No. 1 Notre Dame for a 12-8 victory in Charlottesville. Virginia (11-3, 4-2 ACC) has been the only team able to beat Notre Dame (9-2, 3-2) this season. The Cavaliers won in South Bend by a 15-10 margin in March.

Sunday's outcome started to become clear in the third quarter when Virginia took a 9-6 lead after the two teams were tied at 4 at halftime. Virginia scored four consecutive goals after Pat Kavanagh gave Notre Dame a 6-5 lead.

Virginia managed fewer shots on goal — 24 — but converted half of them into scores against ND goalie Liam Entenmann. Virginia goalie Matthew Nunes saved 19 of the 27 shots on goal by Notre Dame.

Attackman Xander Dickson led the Cavaliers with four goals and one assist. Midfielder Thomas McConvey added his 26th career hat trick. Attackman Jake Taylor was Notre Dame's only multi-goal scorer with two.

Eight goals are the fewest Notre Dame has scored in a game all season. The previous season low of 10 came in the previous loss to Virginia.

Notre Dame will complete its regular season schedule Saturday at No. 18 North Carolina (7-6, 1-4). The Irish beat the Tar Heels 16-9 earlier this month.

Recruiting New 2024 RB offer in Oklahoma

As mentioned in today's Trail Tracks, Notre Dame's running backs coach Deland McCullough was visiting Midwest City (Okla.) Carl Albert to evaluate 2024 prospect Xavier Robinson.

Robinson is rated by Rivals as a three-star inside linebacker, but the Irish and others are recruiting him as a running back. Notre Dame offered Robinson today.

Earlier Monday, Robinson announced he's extending his recruitment and has official visits in June planned for Iowa State (9th), Oklahoma (15th) and Oklahoma State (22nd).

Robinson rushed 276 times for 2,594yards and 39 touchdowns in 14 games last season as a junior.

BAS: Irish earn series win over FSU with 12-8 victory

Home runs kept Notre Dame in the game Sunday at Eck Stadium. A five-run sixth inning without the longball allowed the Irish to hold on for a 12-8 home victory over Florida State and another ACC series win.

Notre Dame (25-17, 13-11) scored 12 runs in a victory for the second straight day against former coach Link Jarrett's Seminoles (15-27, 6-18).

A three-run home run by right fielder Brooks Coetzee gave the Irish a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fourth after first baseman Carter Putz and catcher Vinny Martinez each hit solo homers in the first two innings, respectively.

Florida State tied the game at five in the top of the fifth with a James Ferrer RBI double off right-hander Caden Spivey.

Putz put Notre Dame back in front with another home run, a two-run shot, in the bottom of the fifth. Then the Irish padded their lead with a two-RBI single by shortstop Zack Prajzner, an RBI single by Putz, and two-RBI single by Coetzee in the sixth.

Florida State threatened to pull closer when a two-RBI double by Colton Vincent cut Notre Dame's lead to 12-8 with two runners on base. But Ryan Lynch replaced reliever Matt Bedford to record the final out of the eighth inning with a strikeout of leadoff hitter DeAmez Ross.

The combined RBI total from Coetzee (five) and Putz (four) was enough to outscore Florida State.

Starter Carter Bosch navigated a tough 2 1/3 innings by surrendering four earned runs on four hits and two walks. Spivey earned the victory with 4 2/3 innings pitched with only two earned runs allowed on four hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Sammy Cooper finished the game with a scoreless ninth inning.

Notre Dame is scheduled to host Bowling Green (15-25) on Tuesday before NC State (28-14, 8-12) visits for a three-game series starting Thursday.

Something Seems Off

Something just doesn't feel right with the Notre Dame program, the atmosphere. Tyler leaving leaves a massive hole after next year unless CJ comes in and is really good. For some reason I don't have a ton of faith in a QB that Tommy hand picked, he did the same thing Tyler over JJ and now CJ over Julian. Hell for that matter will CJ even stick with his commit with the strangness going on at ND?
but
Talent is supposed to create competition, not an environment that competitors run from. Tyler is headed to Bama, when Sayin arrives, that QB room is going to be stacked, nothing even close to ND's, but yet Tyler left ND to go there?????? Now the Diggs portal move although many are like well that makes sense, to me it really doesn't. We have one back with experience, another coming off of a devastating injury that many have never fully recovered from, so why does Diggs decide now is a good time to go?

Also, if I was one of those young receivers I would be looking at the future and going WTF, who is getting me the ball?????

Something just seems off with Notre Dame and I am not pointing fingers at anyone or anything.

BAS: Irish even series with FSU with a 12-2 rout on Saturday

Vinny Martinez continued his hot streak with three hits, including a three-run homer in a six-run fourth inning, as host Notre Dame routed Florida State and former Irish head coach Link Jarrett, 12-2, Saturday at Eck Stadium.

Weather permitting, the rubber game of the three-game ACC baseball series will be played Sunday at 11 a.m. EDT, four hours earlier than originally scheduled to try to avoid rain in the forecast.

In his last eight games, Martinez, a grad transfer catcher/DH from Stanford, has raised his batting average from .169 to .280. He’s 15-of-28 (.536) with six walks, nine runs scored and 11 RBIs during that streak.

Another grad transfer, Blake Hely (3-1) from Davidson, turned in his second straight impressive start. The right-hander went seven innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs, while walking one and striking out eight. Lefty Will Mercer finished up with two scoreless innings of relief.

The Irish (24-17, 12-11 ACC) trailed 2-0 and were without a hit when they plated six runs in the fourth. In addition to Martinez’s homer, Brook Coetzee doubled home a run, Danny Neri had an RBI single, and Zack Prajzner came home on a bad throw on a pickoff attempt.

Florida State (15-26, 6-17) surrendered six more runs in the eighth.

Jack Penney went 2-for-4 with a grand slam and four RBIs. Coetzee went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and got plucked by a pitch for the nation’s-leading 25th time this season. Brady Gumph entered the game as a pinch hitter and stayed to play left field and went 2-for-2 with a run scored.
