Football Press Conference transcript from Notre Dame O-coordinator Gerad Parker (8/29)

Good answer on how it felt to be calling offensive plays for Notre Dame for the first time in a game.

Recruiting Some thoughts on Loghan Thomas from our Ohio State site

Jeremy Birmingham, recruiting analyst for Dotting The Eyes, attended the St. Edward-Good Counsel matchup of top 25 teams in the country on Sunday.

St. Edward features a pair of Ohio State offensive line commitments, but it's also the new home for Notre Dame DE commit Loghan Thomas. Birmingham shared his thoughts on Thomas from the 28-7 St. Edward victory.

Here's the excerpt from the full story:

LOGHAN THOMAS IS AN INTERESTING PROSPECT

Notre Dame commit Loghan Thomas is back in Ohio after transferring into St. Edward last month and though he's still learning the defense for the Eagles his natural athletic ability made him one of the standouts on Sunday.

Thomas, the country's No. 7-ranked weakside defensive end, is listed at 6-foot-4 and 210-pounds but he looks to weigh less than that. It's the lack of bulk that makes him interesting as a prospect but also what makes it hard to gauge exactly how his game translates to the next level. Thomas was explosive though with a great first step and showed the ability to drop into coverage from his defensive end spot and rush the passer with equal comfort.

Ohio State needs edge rushers in its 2024 class but to this point there's been no Buckeyes contact with Thomas and it's probably unlikely to happen despite the fact that he's very talented. His game is similar to that of Miami commit Elias Rudolph but Thomas seems like a safer bet at the next level. He just needs some time in a big-time weight program to develop into the best version of himself.

Football Special teams coordinator Marty Biagi's press conference transcript (8/29)

SPECIAL TEAMS COORDINATOR MARTY BIAGI
Post-practice Aug. 29, 2023

Spencer Shrader was great on kickoffs, but misses his only field goal attempt. What's the messaging?

“He’s a vet. We’re always going to assess to make sure. So many times people jump the gun: how was the snap? How was the hold? We talked through the situation, and then like coach says, ‘One play, one life.’ Then we try to get ready to go again. So, we don’t try to overthink it, over-diagnose it. Just like everybody else, come back, watch some film, and learn from it.”

What are some of the things your kickoff return unit players did to win that job?

“I would say they took a ton of pride in fall camp. I think often people think of special teams as ‘Defense. Defensive player.’ We challenged them with the understanding that there’s going to be a role for you. Kickoff return, what do you do? You block. Well what do you do on screens? You block. What do you do in the run game? You block.

“The great part is we have great buy-in from our staff, and [wide receivers] coach [Chansi] Stuckey challenged them like I did. It’s great that you have those big bodies out there that want to get in there and block, and they showed up.”

How do you combat the directional kickoff to your up-back/other kick return like Navy did with Gi’Bran Payne?

“You don’t really know until you get to the game plan, but it was one of those things we didn’t know, because it was a new [special teams] coordinator. It’s something you have to be ready and adjust for. It’s my job to make sure we get our best guys the ball but with Payne. As you could tell, we made an adjustment at the half, and what was great to see was — we always want to hit the home run — but seeing our guys at half make an adjustment that isn’t going to show up on the staff. Instead of getting tackled on the 18 on the second one, he got out to the 27 or 28. It’s a 10-yard difference, and that’s encouraging.”

And that 10-yard difference changes the offense’s approach at times?

“No question. You look at it the same way (defensively). When we kicked off and they had the block in the back when we were covering, they were at the minus-8 or 12. So, we were able to create a short field, defense held them, they punt, and CT [Chris Tyree] is returning the ball and it gives coach [Gerad] Parker the ball on the Plus-50.

“Although we didn’t have a lot of great opportunities, it was a great way to show all three phases of offense, defense, special teams worked together. Kickoff: Keep them to the 12 after the penalty. Defense holds — actually backs them up more — and we get the ball with CT and a good 10-plus yard return and offense goes down and scores. Those are the things you’re trying to show the team that it’s not going to be this amazing home run, but guys, look at the impact in these scenarios.”

Spencer Shrader on kickoffs — team-specific to hang one high versus boot it out of the end zone?

“I think it’s a game plan each week. Based on the returner, the return scheme, wind elements. But it’s definitely a weapon and a blessing to know that, ‘OK, he can do this.’

“If you go back to when they brought it out from 1-yard deep, and I think the hang was 4.5 seconds. Our whole thing is, when you pause it, when the ball is caught, where’s our front line running down the field? I think every single guy was running down past the 25-yard line. That’s the attention to detail that we’re going to take every rep seriously whether — we never assume it’s a touchback.”

Can you assess Dylan Devezin’s first game as the holder?

I thought he was really composed, his first time playing in a big game. We even practiced the wet-ball drill all throughout the week. Just something that would go unnoticed until the bad thing happened. But he takes a lot of pride in it. You think, ‘Oh well how hard is it?’ Until you get out there …

“It’s real exciting to see. He knows his role. He just wants to be the best holder he can for Spencer and for the team.”

Punter Bryce McFerson OK not playing [the Irish never punted in the game?

“I told him, that’s got to be frustrating going all the way over to another country and then not getting to play like that. He was ready. He actually had a really good warm-up and [said], ‘I’ll be OK if we don’t punt.’”

As far as kickoff coverage, who stood out?

“We were able to get a lot of people in. which is great, in Week1. Ramon Henderson was one of the fastest people — we’re always grading who’s the fastest to the 30-yard line. Just to show the standard of competition whether it’s a touchback or not. Ramon was super fast down the field. [Jaylen] Sneed was fast down the field. Marty Auer came in for four reps and got down the field fast. We’ve got a lot of people in, in that short time. It was great to get Chase Ketterer in. He had been the scout team quarterback, and he has plenty of speed, so it was good to get him in for some reps.

“Just to get a chance for some guys that may not normally be in a chance and say, ‘OK, let’s see what you can do?’ Really only had one return, and after the penalty held them to the 12-yard line. We were encouraged by that, but still have to clean up a few things.”

Punt team debut this week? Or are you going to hold off again?

“That’s up to the head coach and coach Parker. Coach Parker keeps doing his thing.”

Thanks for a great opening week of the season!

As I'm sitting in the Charlotte airport on my way home from Dublin, I wanted to take a moment to share some genuine gratitude to our subscribers and the community we're building on The Insider Lounge.

I wouldn't have been able to spend a few days in Dublin without your support in the first place. It was an incredible time.

And it's an incredible time for Inside ND Sports as we've been gaining a lot of subscribers lately, we've received great feedback from the content we've been doing and I'm really digging the interactions that have been happening on the board.

I know there's a lot of excitement about this Notre Dame team after yesterday, but I'm just as excited about what we have going on with the site. That's a credit to @Eric Hansen and @Charleston Bowles, but it's also a testament to the support we're receiving from you.

So thank you. All of you. Well, maybe not ALL of you.

I hope you're having a great Sunday. Let's keep this thing rolling!

Football Knee injury against Navy will sideline Notre Dame DT Gabriel Rubio

The Irish will be without backup DT Gabriel Rubio for "a couple weeks" due to a knee injury.

I expect to see Jason Onye and Donovan Hinish to serve as the primary backups for Howard Cross III and Rylie Mills, respectively, while Rubio's out.

Football Five defining plays from Notre Dame football's dispatching of Navy

My five defining plays from Notre Dame's 42-3 victory over Navy:

1. Audric Estime’s 11-yard run on third-and-10
2. Navy’s failed fourth-down attempt to end its first drive
3. Jadarian Price’s 19-yard touchdown run
4. Notre Dame’s third-down stand to force Navy’s first punt
5. Sam Hartman’s second touchdown pass to Jaden Greathouse

Agree or disagree? What plays should have made the list?

Best ND opening season games ever

The games that ND opened with Michigan were always my favorites'. Many close ones.
My favorite closing games are the ones against USC. Many close ones.
It does not get better than when ND opens against UM and closes with UCS.
Win those two and you have great shot at a championship. I have been following
ND since the early 1960s In those days there were only a few games on TV but all ND game were on
radio, Many many great ND game against UM and USC.

Our lives since the last ND football national champion...

I'll start: 2 children born, both graduated from HS and college, both married and great young adults. I was on my 2nd civilian job since my US navy days having been honorably discharged in 1987, now I'm a stone's throw from retirement, but not sure when. It's not a matter of $$ for retirement, which is a minor miracle to me after we paid for college for 2 (1 @ Georgetown at full price), but a matter of wanting to keep busy. My father passed in 2012, the man who got me into ND in the 1st place, and both of my in-laws have passed. In 1989 dad was on the ND sidelines against USC, which was probably one of the better games played in that rivalry. The wife has managed to put up with me for nearly 39 years and we're on our 4th english bulldog (Homer). Another generation of ND fans is yet to be born (no grandchildren yet), but I'm sure hoping THAT milestone happens after we get a natty. My dad and I watched MANY an ND game together, but we never got to see 1 in person at South Bend together. 1 friend finally understood he was an alcoholic (early 90's), and how now been sober for 30+ years, while another 2 friends of mine died from drinking.
