There are plenty of places for remedial programs. Notre Dame is not one of them. And if, as you suggest, the "current tuition is appalling," who want want to spend that kind of money paying for remedial classes?

I get where you are coming from, but you keep obfuscating the point...ND would do a great social good by providing a remedial path to an easier degree that wouldn't at all dilute the academic brand.

I know and work with many ND graduates in hi-tech. They would never take such a program and still would have gone the STEM degree path. Obviously.

And just like my Jesuit alma mater, the tuition is appalling. This wasn't what higher education was meant to be. Never mind the Catholic mission.

Finally, the point stands about hypocrisy around ND reaping a lot by participating in the sordid competition that is NCAA football. Let's be real here.

It's been said and I'll say it again the 2nd and 1 play call was absolutely HORRIBLE

Right, exactly, because computers don't care about winning. They don't care about anything. They're not alive, they have no sense of self-preservation. An algorithm with a utility function or whatnot is not the same thing as living, breathing human being fighting for his survival, with all his mental/emotional faculties at his disposal. And everyone's already familiar with Chat GPT's 'hallucinations'.

But who knows, maybe computers will one day be able to account for all of that, and there's an algorithmic fix for every last possible contingency.

Let me distill it this way...decision are typically made by:

1) plotting a curve through N dimensions in a graph for best fit...gives odds of outcome.
2) so called neural network...paths of outcomes based on how many factors in each layer.

Another way to explain it is you can use statistics to record throwing a football and where it will land. Get the variables on each throw. AI will do a solid job of predicting where the ball lands.

But statistical confidence factor is not the laws of physics. The laws of physics will predict EXACTLY where the football will land. The usual correlation vs causality.

Of course, AI can use the laws of physics...but without the laws, well, you use regressions or neural networks.

Harsh as you are, you are generally correct. It's like taking part of the Iron Triangle Slave Trades...you claim your ships are clean, offer safe passage, food, water. But you're still a part of it!

I know I'll get flak for my comment. But there is an air of hypocrisy here. As an immigrant myself, we had affordable Catholic education as an option. I went to Catholic grammar school, HS (run by the Congregation of Holy Cross that runs ND), and a Jesuit university.

The current tuition and elitism are appalling. Slowly eroding the Catholic identity. And yet they quibble over taking in marginalized students that could stand a remedial program, as they help build and maintain a binding football brand?

Riley Leonard before Notre Dame...

The naysayers will tell you, he just was playing for a crappy team that's why his numbers are this bad.
Are his numbers bad? He had basically the same yards in 2022 as Caleb Williams did in 2023. Is he as good as Williams because his yards are the same? Obviously not.

Statistics are nice but don’t tell the whole story. Just looking at his completion percentage: He’s ranked 44 in 2022. Out of how many QB’s? There are 134 teams so he’s at least 44/134 which is good for top 33%. Without any context, I’d probably take that. More than 134 QB’s obviously played so does that stat include all QB’s or just starters or just guys with 100 passes? What if he’s 44 out of 188? Now that’s top 24%. With no context I’d take that.

I could use Denbrock’s #1 offense in 2023 to argue that he’s overrated (and I do think he’s overrated but I’m still happy he’s here.)

Stats are overrated. He was definitely the MVP of that Duke team. Maybe ND goes 12-0 if he comes to ND in 2023? That’s very realistic.

I don't know about that. I think they're going to have to compromise their ideals. Which have no meaning anyway, it's just something that makes ND feel good about itself. It's difficult to think of anything that isn't morally hideous about ND's academic ideals. Quite frankly. So if they're committed to their fussy, self-aggrandizing academic elitism, then de-emphasize football. Or keep settling for whatever they have now. As if LSU or any other seat of higher learning are scumbags somehow for letting in these otherwise non-students in to play football. ND's so-called 'ideals' bring into question the very moral existence of higher education as a social institution. So it's fitting that it should cost them football glory, if they are going to be so unbending in their fealty to them.

Yeah he was solid. He won on the road with a below average OL and had a QBR of 66. That is above average. He was solid. No turnovers ran well. Solid game 1. Awful game 2
Agreed Game 1 was solid (he also had 12 carries for 63 yds). But if the struggles continue Saturday, I hope they're willing to make a QB change at halftime, if needed.

Riley Leonard before Notre Dame...

Do you know what these numbers mean?
44
40
48
54
55
45
64
53

Looking at Riley's healthy 2022 season these numbers are alarming...

His ranking among all QB's In 2022

#44 in completion %
#40 in passing yardage
#48 in touchdown passes
#54 in yards per attempt
#55 in touchdown percentage
#45 in adjusted yards per attempt
#64 in yards per catch
#53 in yards per game...

And possibly the worst one...
#48 in QB rating

I say again if Riley is playing QB for The Citadel he's doing OK.

The problem is he's playing for us and
this is NOT what we need.

Most QB's that are decent have a stat or two throwing the ball in the top 20 even if some others stats are in the 40/50 ranking area.

He's nowhere near that in any passing stat.

I guarantee you and would bet anyone that Angeli would crack the top 30 in at least one of the above stats and probably gets in the top 30 in a few categories.

If we get all punch drunk over a transfer QB with these numbers then that warrants immediate dismissal on many fronts of the head coach.

We have QB's on the roster that would do better than this.

Oh well...

maybe in 2028 we'll get this QB thing figured out.
Don't hold your breath
The naysayers will tell you, he just was playing for a crappy team that's why his numbers are this bad.

NIU head coach

Very impressed. Class act. Interviewed by michael Wilbon and was extremely complementary of Marcus freeman. Says he will turn things around. Called freeman after the game and offered to help in any way Said freeman was a total gentleman.

All great to hear. I still am out of patience with freeman. 3 years. Losses to inferior opponents continue Its bad
Freeman needing help from NIU coach, or NIU coaching feeling like he can help Freeman says EVERYTHING

Can this clown

Leonard’s Shoulder Injury

When I'm wrong I admit it. I predicted Riley would last 4 games before getting hurt. It only took him a game and a half, I stand corrected. Without his running ability, he is a below average QB. His passing is mediocre at best.
If everything's clicking and he's at his best he's definitely the best QB, and that includes of course running the ball on a regular basis. His passing is not great I guess, but he can hit throws. But he's probably not going to carve up a defense. Any injury to a running QB that limits him isn't ideal at all, obviously. And puts the even more pressure on the passing game, when what he needs is the opposite. So maybe you're right and that's really the big thing with RL. His health.

Leonard’s Shoulder Injury

Completely irresponsible to keep an injured player like that in the game and trotting them out the next week to play as well. Leonard is also culpable as he is the one ultimately who needs to know his own limitations/abilities but players generally think they can achieve more than they are able to. Blows my mind that the coaches really were trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. A QB change after Leonard's injury probably wins that NIU game.

"Solid game?" Really, are you fricking serious? Your BFF has ZERO TD passes, ranked 110th at 18.5pts per game, passing efficiency is ranked 130th, and 5.1 yards per pass attempt. He's solid as a rock, LMFAO. I mean a marshmallow

What does this quote say about ND QB play under Freeman?

"Just want to play within the offense. We don't need anything spectacular," Freeman said to NBC sideline reporter Zora Stephenson. "Do exactly what your coaches tell you to do, play within the game plan and the rest will take care of itself. If we start trying to make plays and throw the ball down the field, then all of a sudden we're playing out of character. Just do exactly what we want you to do and the rest will take care of itself."
This could be coach speak for we don't want him forcing things, and he's got a point when you try to force throws, etc. that's when the mistakes happen.

Leonard’s Shoulder Injury

The backups are fine. Angeli has proven he can play. I trust him in any situation.

Leonard stayed in because he was "hurt". He wasn't "injured". Leonard could play, so the staff stayed with their QB1. It was a miss, a mistake. But I get and understand the decision.
Yes agree, QB's have played with this same injury to the non throwing shoulder, apparently it has no impact on their ability to throw the ball.

Yeah, that's true. It's not typical to sub a QB out lightly. But we lost. To NIU. And RL is very clearly questionable in his ability to begin with. Raw talent, yes. Rock-solid, reliable ability, not as much. So maybe they should have made a move, in retrospect.
