Lol... always loved that line. Anyway I see a lot of people talking about EVG not coaching well with such a talented defense and I want to know what you guys are smoking? We have some solid players with Day, Jaylon, and I still think Russell will be very good (at least I am hoping) but man he made some terrible plays against Virginia.

Anyway I will say it again and again, our program has had a poor secondary for years and I never understood why we can't recruit a "group" of solid corners and safeties. The last one of remember was with Holtz on the NC team. After that we had players here and there, but no big time groups that could cover top teams. I wrote about this before the season, how losing Crawford to injury was going to be big, and you can see what I am talking about now. He is a solid player and probably would be starting against Clemson but would have added depth either way for the Nickle.

The other major issue is pass rush and I mentioned this last year and people got bent out of shape. I remember someone arguing with me even though we were ranked like 63rd in the nation in sacks and were tied or 1 ahead of like 14 other teams.. basically not very good. Of course we had all the injuries so I figured maybe that could be the big issue but once again we have starters back and nobody getting pressure. Even when EVG was sending 5-6 guys against Virginia there were very few times the QB felt them and made poor throws. He has to do this though because our front 3-4 can't get up the field and it is terrible. We don't have a guy like Tuck on that D-line and I guess nobody on the team is ready to be a pass rusher from the LB position, well I think Jaylon could be that guy but then you have very bad coverage from the rest of the LB's. Joe is actually good but doesn't have the speed unfortunately.

Eric Hansen, Al Lesar of the SB Tribune, Chet Kopick, Don Crique, Jack Nolan and Reggie Brooks on the post game show last Saturday, Bryan Driskell of Rivals, and the Irish Sports Beat Show on WSBT South Bend have all talked and wrote quite clearly about the defense and their concerns. It's not anyone's imagination. With all that NFL talent, most people agree that this should be a virtual shut down defense. The Secondary and Pass Rush are the main concerns. It's early. Let's see what happens.

There's no excuse for this defense. With the exception 38 and 45, every last one of them have speed and power. Hell, the entire secondary we're fringe five stars coming out of high school. And we're talking about kids that can navigate ND's curriculum so don't tell me they can't communicate. Fix the damn problems or get a DC that can.

Resusciate and bring back John Ray. He was our last really great defense coordinator.

Well obviously Max didn't live up to his 5 star status... it happens on occasion. I am not sure who else Rivals had as a 5 star, was Russell even one? Also you still ignore the fact we have no pass rush so what is your great idea to fix it? I mean if EVG sends 6 guys and they can't get pressure how can you blame him? We don't have the talented pass rusher we need.

This game against GT isn't going to tell us much overall about our defense. On paper we have bigger and stronger kids but that hasn't meant much in the past when playing worse teams like Navy and without EVG at defensive coordinator. I hope we can stop GT and come away without any injuries but I still think the game will be won or lost on the offensive side of the ball. If we can't run the ball, control the clock, and get a lead then it could be a long day for the defense. I think we have to score at least 30 to win, I can't see this game being low scoring and I am sure the over/under is high but I don't bet so haven't checked.

Anyway I am not here to say EVG is the greatest coach or anything like that but I also think people overestimate the talent on defense. Max, Nyles, and Cole needed to step up and I don't recall any of the defensive line being known as pass rushers. in 2012 we had such a strong front they caused sacks from the nose tackle positions and I remember Jaylon was used as a pass rusher a lot more because he was a freshmen and was still learning everything else.

Hey hopefully things change but some kids are going to have to step up and make a difference. I really thought Max and Nyles were going to be those guys. I never had faith in the front getting to the QB because I knew they would double Day and the others are good but not like the talent we had in Nix and Tuitt before. Tillery and Cage look like potential stars but both are young and need time.

How about a guy named Alvarez

Lmao... Alvarez was treated like dirt at ND, he would never come back here. There were a lot of great coaches from the Holtz era, probably some of the best our program has ever had, but the ones who are still around would never come back to ND. This about some of the guys who were here... Urban, Moore, Alvarez, and Holtz to name a few. I forgot who our RB's coach was but he was a great guy as well.

I said all were near five stars and I agree that ND doesn't hVe a legit pass rusher. Although Sheldon is a pretty good pass rusher. There's more then enough talent that ND shouldn't give up 30 points to Virginia.

Who said anything about coming back?

Well I agree with you about Virginia but Day is a nose tackle so if he is our best pass rusher then we really have issues.

Jaylon wasn't enrolled at ND in 2012 and who is EVG?

Yes I meant 2013 his freshmen year with Tuitt, Day, and Nix he gave them an edge outside which was nice. Te'o was who I was spacing out on in 2012, great pass rusher but he was so good at coverage (basically the same as Jaylon is today) you needed him covering people instead of blitzing. I still think Te'o is better all around but Jaylon will keep getting better. I think he leaves for the NFL this season along with the rest of our best players.

BVG's schemes are a problem but

aren't you getting that feeling just before an unexplained Irish effort that just becomes one of those talked about games ! This week the ND defensive players will over come both GT and BVG!

To the OP... I respect your opinion. However, I totally disagree with your analysis. The number one reason ND played for a championship in the Kelly era is because of the defense. That secondary gave up little to no big play's. You really can't judge last year's defense because of all the injuries. That being said. ND will have to hold Gt to less than 350yards rushing. This defense will stop the run game of Gt and will secure an ND victory. 41-24

Wish I had your optimism. I really do.

But I have yet to see a Kelly coached team really slow down a good option team. I'm just hoping they come up with something that works by Saturday.

What the he'll are you talking about?

If Alvarez was mistreated at ND and didn't like ND, why was it that he recommended Rob Ianello, then an assistant at Wisky to accept the job at ND?

You are correct... I was thinking about Joe Moore, who has passed, one of the greatest offensive line coaches ever. Holtz wasn't treated well either, he deserved a lot more from ND for what he did.

You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: that Kelly's firing, while tragic, probably wins games

You can see the future? You've got some serious issues man. Get help.

Have you considered that the reason Coach Kelly gets you so upset is because you see yourself in some of his angry outbursts? Kelly's doing a great job at ND. Here's hoping you get some help and that person is half as competent as our coach is. Then you might have a chance to get better.

Go Irish!

That defense you claimed led ND to the National Championship Game was led by Bob Diaco. The same DC you cried about in 2013 claiming he ran a Vanilla / Bend but Don't Break Defense, Right Purse? Why don't you come to grips with the fact you are completely clueless about football and it's strategies. Your gutless ass blocked me awhile back because you couldn't take me coming on here and bitch slapping your inane commentary all over the place, I've got news for you, I'm still doing it. Sit down and be quiet.

Agree with you 100% on this... so many people on here were so quick to get rid of Diaco and now it is the same with BVG. Sometimes the players aren't as good as you might think or they aren't playing to their abilities. Could this be the coaches fault? Of course it can be but then you need to recognize every assistant around and not just the coordinator. I actually like the pro style defense with the blitzes because we don't have the secondary, as much as some want to keep denying this fact, to shut down strong passing teams. Shoot Virginia wasn't close to being a strong passing team but we made that QB look like a Heisman candidate. Again pass rushing as well, just nothing there and unfortunately our blitzes aren't paying off. I am with most people here who think we have the talent, I mean it sure looks like it on paper, but the play during games is all that matters. Kids either step up like Jaylon, Joe, Sheldon, etc... or they lay down like Max, Cole, Nyles and so on.

So angry for a dude that just got caught chasing a laser pointer on the wall.

Why are you so angry Lucky? What made you this way?

Diaco played to conservatively to completely utilize the talent he had. His system had a lower ceiling. He also built his recruiting rep on a single commitment. He played to 'not lose' vs playing to 'win'.

BVG is charasmatic, energetic and even likable. But the past 10 games cannot be overlooked when evaluating his effectiveness. Also the on field confusion is apparent. I think the talent > coaching so far.

This weekend I think the talent closes together and puts in one of those efforts, the likes of which can be done for a game, but not sustainable a/c of the emotions required; they rise up and win one in a way they are not expected to!

(please do not bet the house; I watched Knute Rockne vids to many times this week!)
