Win v Miami Was Huge

I don't see how ND makes a bowl game. By not winning at least one game against either Duke or Stanford it effectively ended ND's bowl hopes.

If ND beats the service academies it would get them to 5 wins. USC is an automatic loss and Va Tech is a really solid team. That's a loss too. 5-7.

Will ND take a bowl game at 5-7 if there aren't enough bowl eligible teams? That would be embarrassing if they did that to a once proud program.

Our success on the field is random. A bowl game will just be another random performance game. It will have no bearing on the future unless there is a coaching change.

Bowl game aside, the game against Miami was important because the Irish players know they can win the close one. They now know they can overcome their own mistakes and still win the game. The best part of yesterday was learning from mistakes in a game that they won. I promise you that CJ will never ever make that mistake again. As soon as he made the error, he walked to the sideline with his head down. Everyone rallied around CJ. I love every darn one of them and wouldn't trade any of our guys for anyone.

Puts us in a really good position to get to 6 wins, and into a Bowl Game.

Young guys need the extra practice time. After the horrendous start, getting into a Bowl Game is a great "win for the program".

Never thought Id see the day when Irish fans would be happy with a 6 - 6 season record and a bowl invite to the Poulan Weedeater Bowl.

ND football expectations have been beaten down. Coach 8 -4 needs to thank his agent every day for getting Uncle Jack to agree to that 6 year extension.

Not happy with it, but the situation is what it is......

Get to a bowl game, and start preparing for 17.

Never thought I'd see the day when ND fans cheer for the our team to lose and rip somebody on the hope of getting to a bowl game. Once again, clearly not a guy who has ever worn a jock in his existence. You play/coach, you understand the importance of competing, building and winning- whether you're playing for the natty or pride.

I do not know why you think this is huge. The team should have scorched the miami. Were you watching the special teams play., how about the offense inconsistency, The team looks awful. Very undisciplined. If the ST play is like this during Navy . No way the irish win. Also Army is not a push over. VA tech is a very good team. Helton has USC playing real well. I do not see us 6-6 . 5-7 at best. Things would have to change dramatically to go 7-5 or 6-6

Not a chance in hell Kelly gets three more wins this season. Will you admit then that Kelly needs to be fired? No bowl after 7 seasons should get a coach fired. Hopefully if you can change your mind then Jack can.

Va Tech was beaten soundly by Syracuse ... 6-6 is a real possibility.

A bowl game is a wolf in sheep's clothing ... would require me to spend 4 more hours of my free time on something that is sure to end in at best a "meh" feeling (win over awful team) ... or maybe something worse than that.

VT is a team that is very erratic. If they show up ready and willing to play it is a tossup.
But they can also throw in a 'stinker' tooo!

After living through the Miami teams from the 80s, I'll gladly take a win over them. Kelly is 3-0 vs. Miami and has faced three different Hurricane coaches in six seasons. It shows how difficult finding the right head coach can be.

Miami could have defeated Florida State a month ago. The Cane's implosion after that tough loss has been notable even for that program.

Not happy at all, but when you are 3-5 after 8 games that's the reality of the situation. You can pout about it or you can figure out how to go 1-0 next Saturday to get to 4-5. I guess fans have the option of thinking "big picture" and chucking the season after we are out of contention for the playoffs. But the team or the program doesn't have that option, it's 100% all about figuring out how to beat Navy. And that would be no different if we were 0-8. We have "fans" so caught up in the big picture that they can't get any enjoyment out of beating a team who is right near the top of our rival list, a team that hates us. Beating Miami in football is like beating Duke in basketball, it feels good no matter what kind of team they have or season they are having. So are we feeling good about winning a game? Hell no, the Kelly hater group runs to the message board to try and head off any possible positive feelings about a win on Saturday, almost like they are disappointed that the team didn't go along with their narrative. This board is only slightly less a buzz kill after a win as it is after a loss.

Nebraska did it last year (and won their bowl game). We should, too. Extra practice reps are important.

We can beat VTech, but we'll have to play better than we did vs. Miami.

Yup. This is all about 2017. I like our athletes going forward. We are very young and are seeing the effects at WR and CB/S -- but we are getting better, Sophs and Frosh are starting to get it. Kelly needs to hire: 1) A top notch d coordinator 2) A special teams expert!!! Our special teams nearly cost us that game.

I dont think anyone questions the importance of a bowl game with player development and accomplishment etc. But in terms of leading to future success with Kelly there is no advantage. His offense in the red zone and other questionable calls seem to sabotage any momentum that is created. His decisions... to go on 4th or kick or not kick field goals, pass in hurricanes etc. are personality traits which won't change with time.

I am unsure if the few long time ND fans that still have a twinge of hope or confidence in Kelly as a coach is not just because they have accepted the notion that ND is not really in the NC conversation. Can they be so afraid of change and risk or so 'slow' that seven seasons is not a sufficient evaluation period for them.
Admittedly, it is a risk starting with a new regime, but reward comes with risk. No risk no reward.
Why are these fans so insecure that standing pat with no hope or 'false' hope is preferrable to them?

I am not talking about persons close to Kelly and are 1. Kelly aligned 2. not ND fans of origin and are transients, so goes Kelly so go they. These are a larger group of ID's than they are actual posters/fans.

You don't have to watch....

It's a free country.

Remember how different the off season was after 2014 after we beat LSU in the bowl game, and then we took that momentum into 2015. No reason to pass up the chance for one more game and a bunch more practice for our young kids.

^^^^^^^^^^^I couldn't agree more.

It's not that complicated or deep. Kelly is our coach. We don't have anything to say about when he will no longer be in that position, so why waste brain cells and energy pretending we do? Just root for Kelly et al to beat Navy. If we lose enough games Kelly will be replaced by those in power, and then we can root for another guy. But for now,..............................................................................................

Id rather be 3-5 than sitting at 2-6 going into Navy and the media continuing to bash the program on every ESPN network. At this point our main concern should be showing recruits the program is building not collapsing by winning games that are on the schedule.

CJ made the same mistake in the Miami game that he did against MSU. Changed momentum of the game both times.

And 2017 is all about going 9-3 and hearing people like you shout about how great of a turnaround it was. Kelly is a loser and nothing will change under him.

I don't think you read my entire post. You started repeating what I wrote. When did I say it's huge? It's embarrassing and I don't think ND will get to 6-6. If the team was well coached then the extra practices would be big.

And prepare for an 8-4 season in 2017 and people like you crying about academics. Meanwhile, Michigan and OSU will be prepping for national title runs.
I won't be crying.

You cry about CBK and ND losses. I don't.
