....win the big game again? How close does Coach Kelly have your team to reach the pinnacle.... 1,2 3 years? Non smack questions here just looking for some homegrown opinions on how close you think the Irish are.

ND was there last year but needed a few plays to go their way. OSU was the best team in the country and proved it against ND.

That said, ND is already there. ND has the schedule and experience to make the playoffs this year. My take is ND will be crowned national champs this year.

question for you, what do you consider "the big game"? National championship? Reaching the playoffs? beating a top 10 team on the road? i am confused a bit by the question i guess. But to answer it generally, I think we as ND fans didnt realize how far we had fallen by the time BK got here. We have come a long ways to compete year in and year out. We were having a good run every few yrs, and if it werent for an absolute rash of injuries, i think the past 2 yrs wouldve been better. It was an absolute coaching feat to get to 10-3 w/ losses by only a couple of pts to 2 top 5 teams on the road, playing w/ a back up QB and 3rd or 4th string RB and freshman TE at the start of the year. So I guess we're just getting there and now we'll begin to see how good of a coach BK is (I hope) now that he has the program on firm footing.

Wow, awesome opinion! How many starters on both sides of the ball are you guys returning? Who or how many players do you think breakout or who do expect to have a stellar season? Thanks

The offensive line will be incredible even though they are only returning two starters - depth is incredible and ready. The newcomers at DE will cause disruption ND has not seen for years. The upgrade at MLB will shut down the opposing rush game. Josh Adams will have a spectacular year at RB. Regardless who starts at QB - it will be a position of strength.

The National Championship is what I was referring to... I ask these questions because of your storied history and just trying to get a consensus on how the fanbase has been so patient in waiting to reach the pinnacle again. Thanks for answering.

A better question: when is Florida going to play a nonconference game outside the state of Florida?
Michigan in 2017, Miami

Michigan in 2017 in Cowboys Stadium, and Miami in 2019... Coach Mac unlike predecessor is trying to open it up a bit.

Don't mind NDSMC78 - he is always suspicious of fans asking about ND. ND is going to be GREAT this year and they do well when they fly under the radar.

in fairness, miami doesnt count since he said out of conference outside the state of florida. But i dont want to bash a fan of another team that comes here and isnt here just to troll. I think by then that will be a great game though.

College football is at the point where each year there are about 10-12 teams that have a great chance of making the playoffs. Of course most of those teams will falter (either by upset or against one another) throughout the year...

Notre Dame is right where they need to be heading forward. Right in the conversation of teams that have a chance to be 11-1 or better each year and have a shot to make the playoffs. They'll likely falter more times than they actually make it, but being in the conversation most years come November is what every Coach and AD in America is looking for.

It took Brian Kelly about 4-5 years, but ND's depth chart has become solid at all positions. Ideal all the time? No. But still solid. Can Notre Dame's recruiting improve. Of course it can? How much? That's hard to say because ND is one of those places where "the sky is not the limit" due to of some of the variables and challenges ND's program endures (when compared to the other elite recruiters).

When will ND will its next national title? Not too sure... But ND is "back" for all intents-and-purposes. Now we just have to see if Brian Kelly is good enough / lucky enough, to have recruiting, health, eligibility, luck, execution and scheduling come together for him so ND can add another Natty to its history books.

and as far as this year goes, we lose alot from last year. Our top 3 WRs last year are gone and if Jaylon hadnt gotten injured we probably wouldve had 2 top 10 draft picks and 3 1st rounders. So obviously that is hard to replace, but Mike McGlinchey probably has the talent to be a 1st rd pick on the Oline, maybe not top 10 level though. Anyone thats replacing guys like Chris Brown or Amir Carlisle at WR only lack in experience, they are just as highly rated as recruits. Fuller will be extremely difficult if not impossible to replace, but i think the offense will lean more on intermediate passing than the deep ball. Tarean Folsten was our leading rusher 2 yrs ago and got hurt on the 1st drive of the season last year, so it will be interesting to see how he does returning. I dont think losing Prosise will hurt too much at RB b/c he returns and i expect our 2 freshmen from last year will be better as well. TE is a wild card position i think, i really have no idea what to expect. We had some injuries last year and ended up playing w/ a true freshman, a highly rated 1, but still a freshman. Kelly sounds like he wants to play him more as a WR like Funchess was at UM, which i find intriguing. I hope we can find a couple options as it was a position of strength a few yrs ago, now though its a question mark.
On defense who knows. I'm not sold on Van Gorder as a def coordinator, probably alot of ND fans share that sentiment. Losing Jaylon, Sheldon Day and a few other starters may be tough. we have alot of kids that were 4* rated at LB and some think losing Joe Schmidt may be a plus as Nyles Morgan was a high school all american and will replace him. Dline will be interesting, i dont think we will have someone as good as sheldon day, but we will have a bunch of guys that will be solid i think. Add freshman Daelin Hayes to the mix a few snaps a game which should add a playmaker if he can stay healthy. Secondary, please Max Redfield, live up the 5* billing. we lost a couple SRs which could be tough to replace, we'll see.

Hard to say when ND will win a title again. Since Kelly's 12-0 regular season, every year it seems that ND is so close, yet so far away from being elite again. The two most glaring needs in my opinion to get ND over that hump is a having a dominant front 7 defense and an elite Heisman type player on offense such as a Reggie Bush, Tommy Frazier, Tim Brown, etc. We've seen the defense break down when they play an elite offense/talent such as Bama, OSU, FSU, and Clemson. Recruiting elite front 7 recruits has been Kelly's biggest challenge from a recruiting standpoint, but it has been on the upward trend as of recent. Having that Heisman type player would do so much for ND, as far as creating big plays, other players getting easier looks against the D and ultimately moving the chains and scoring touchdowns.

Regarding this years team, in all honesty I don't see them winning the title, but it really wouldn't surprise me if ND goes undefeated. The best teams on the schedule are Stanford and SC who Kelly has beaten multiple times. In my opinion, SC and Stanford are upper class teams, but not at the same level as OSU, Clemson, Bama, and FSU. Therein lies the problem with this year's schedule and if ND makes the playoffs. Like 2012, ND would certainly be deserving of getting into the playoffs, if they're undefeated, but that would not mean they're elite and ready to stand with the big boys. ND desperately needs a playoff win or a major bowl win against an elite opponent. I really thought ND could do that last year against OSU in the bowl game, but it just proved that ND was yet again, not ready to win a title.

ND beat UOJ last season. That's a big game. This year beating Stanford and UOJ might get them a playoff spot.

You're playing Miami outside the state of Florida? Where?

in the next 3-5 years it looks like Bama, tOSU,UGA FSU,Clemson and JMO a return of USC will dominate the college game. The silver lining is Bama and UGA/ FSU and Ckemson, 2 get eliminated by intra conference play.
LSU, UM and Oklahoma will lead the next group of contenders (Stanford, UCLA, ND and eventually Texas)
Reasonably the pinnacle is maintaining a status within that 2nd tier; and a major W against one of the teams in these top tiers.

For the benefit of those with the usc troll on ignore. It would seem it's team is out of CFB prison? Or was it the drinking? Hopefully they have sobered up at least.

Go Irish!

Some? Please thats the best thing that happened defensively is joey is gone. Absolutely awful, Nyles was screwed last year plain and simple.

Is it true that Florida hasn't scheduled a non-conference game north of the Mason-Dixon since the Gators lost to Syracuse in 1991?
