What's the financial consequence to firing Kelly?

It seems to me the only reason Kelly was brought back was because ND didn't want to suffer the financial consequences and have to pay Kelly and a new coach separate salaries. With that said, what's the true consequence? During all the time ND was paying Weis, ND didn't seen to have any problem profiting from the football program. They still sold out seats, was on national TV every week, had the money to install field turf/jumbotron/renovations to the stadium, and pay the assistant coaches competitive salaries. What am I missing here? Were scholarships or professors jobs being taken away when ND was paying Weis?

I have not heard from anyone who definitively knows (and has a legit reason to know) what the terms are for Kelly's buyout. Without knowing that, who the heck knows what the "true consequence" is?

There's no point in discussing it now because it's not happening until at least the end of next season.

Won't happen. Kelly will get his 9 wins and say, "look, we are so close" and he'll get another shot. Probably 2018 now when the ND administration realizes they were duped by a professional con artist. What a shame this is for every ND fan. Atleast we got the over performing basketball team to look forward to.

Mark it down now. ND will finish with a losing record next season. Just look at has rinky dink offense as the first reason as to why. Never establishing a ground game or getting away from it too quickly mixed with constant excuses. It's a bad mixture. Toxic, actually.

ND has something like the fifth biggest endowment in the country and a ton of wealthy alums. 22 mil shouldn't be a worry. Swarbrick is just covering his own ass so he can stay on for another year before getting shit canned himself.

I wouldn't count on the losing record. Kelly has a way of bouncing back, getting you to the point where you think he has turned the corner only to disappoint again, as Iowa pointed out.

we have an entire staff that has shifted to short term goals at Notre Dame. It is yet to be determined which assistants won't be back next year. They will look out for their own interests.

Jack is not getting shit canned. ND atheletes, outside of Football is doing quite well.

You would think the ND alums would come together and happily pay the full buyout personally for Kelly to leave.

Don't disagree, but he didn't hire the girls or boys basketball coaches and his only main hire has been BK.

Plus who was responsible for getting short changed by Under Armour by $200 million ?

Why did UCLA get $280 million plus some stock and ND only got $80 Million plus some stock ?

That's a huge financial miss by Jack.

Jack may be a great guy and he has overseen

He's over seen good success from the other sports, but who has he hired in those other sports that are doing well ?

Bk is his main hire. Football is the sport that pays for all the other sports. Football is what put ND on the map.

Jack has hitched his wagon to BK. Jack should hope BK has a great season next year or the heat will only intensify for both of them.

#10....Stanford almost triple...plus, they have a 6 billion + Medical facility.
I have suggested a med school and we won't spend the 1-2 billion to buy or build a hospital. We are a bunch of cheap skates....getting lapped and laughed at...mocked.... thanks in part to the triumvirate of dunces lightweight jenkins, lying jack, a disgusting untalented HC and all their supporters...let's keep driving ND into the dirt.....arrests cheating Ncaa....whooopeeee!!!!

He has added nothing. What is his best coaching hire? If you can fog a mirror you could do better. He has also diminished both our football independence and tainted our brand. He is a spineless loser and his hiring of kelly among other b.s. from him is grounds for dismissal....

Agree. Team will be 4-8 next year. Will start off 0-2 at home and the wheels will be off. Actually, they've never been put back on. Can Kelly now. He's embarrassed the school enough. Take Jack with him. Maybe they can renegotiate the UA contract which would well afford a great coach...

A friend of mine speculates the reason Kelly didn't get axed (so far) is that ND's AVERAGE loss difference was only 7 points. He's right. He also thinks that Jack still has hope that Brian will somehow turn it around next year.

And exactly which of those coaches did Jack hire????? Hmmm. Kelly? Yep! Brey ? Nope! Muffett? Nope! Corrigan? Nope! Baseball coach? Pretty sure that's Jack. And they haven't sniffed one college WS invite. Under Armour contract? Yep!!!! Maybe UCLA's AD cut a better deal to the tune of $160 million? Please tell me exactly what great things the almighty Jack has done other than put a Jumbotron 10 years to late?

7 points? Makes perfect sense for an attorney that thinks he knows sports. What a joke.

The question shouldn't even be a question. If you want to play big boy football it costs money to do that.
Whether you need to pony up serious money for a serious coach or buy a coach out because someone made a mistake in hiring...so be it.

If contributions fall off by say 25%, ND will have to fire Kelly. Paying his buy out is chicken feed compared to donations.

History shows very little correlation between alumni and large donor giving and athletic success. I know there are some who wish there was a correlation, but there isn't.

And you came to that conclusion from this thread how?
It isnt just from this thread alone. It's from the years of mediocrity and the lack of swift action taken by ND adminstration when the program isn't doing well. When I started this thread I was hoping someone could shed light on why ND felt it was necessary to keep Kelly and that it would have serious consequences if they fired Kelly due to the extension/buyout. But others posted that there isn't a serious consequence financially and ND would do just fine as far as running the football program and the university. And 88 said it best that if a school cares about its program, it will fire coaches and buy them out and spend the money needed to get the coach to bring the program back to relevancy. ND didn't do that.

NOBODY KNOWS what the financial consequences are of firing Kelly right now, except Kelly and a small number of people at ND, and none of them are talking. But when it comes to ND fandom, nobody actually knowing something does not usually impair people from just making stuff up.

I don't disagree with you there, but I still remain extremely disappointed in ND adminstration for retaining Kelly. I know ND is different, but this wouldn't be happening at other schools that CARE about their football program. I guess I also wanted to believe that ND adminstration did care, but given what's happened, that doesn't appear to be the case. As long as TV contracts and sellouts remain the norm, we shouldn't expect any changes.

First, the idea that the administration at ND doesn't care about the football program being successful is ridiculous. They want everything to do with ND to perform well. Secondly, sellouts and the TV contract were the same norm when we fired Davie, Willingham and Weis. And even an enormous contract buyout didn't keep us from firing Weis.

Look, a lot of fans, including me, think Kelly should be jettisoned, but right now, for whatever reason(s) the brass at ND does not agree. But people are extrapolating that disagreement out to all sorts of goofy things that have no basis in fact at all, just because they are mad.

If you want me to be specific and not make generalizations, then fine. I dont mean to say ND adminstration doesn't care. It's that they don't care as much about the football program, as other universities do. This is what I think and feel given the poor performance and lack of action. This is extremely disappointing, as historically ND football strived to be elite and their actions are not showing me that.

And yes, I agree that fans out of anger and disappointment will extrapolate the situation. That's why I asked the open ended question about the financial consequences if Kelly were to be fired. I'm not claiming to know anything, as I have zero involvement with the school or the program. I'm just a disappointed fan sharing his thoughts and feelings on a message board and looking for signs that things will get better.

I'd be willing to coach ND for free.

Have a little bit experience at the DIII level, but my age might be against me.

No, not the exact dollar amount, but people can ball park. When you are talking about one of the most valuable programs in the country, the cost of replacing him may be unpleasant but it is definitely possible. No major program with a healthy bottom line keeps a coach they don't want.

Wait...when did words start speaking louder than actions?

seriously....ND board or admin can't say they want winning elite football yet when right before everyone's eyes the team is under performing at such a low level ..etc etc

Brian Kelly sucks. Period. His continued disservice to the young men who sign here should be met with dismissal. Immediately❕
