Van Gorder

If Van Gorder's only objective today was to hold Navy to under 500 yards rushing, that appears to be in jeopardy.

We are supposed to be a championship caliber program and we grab the lowest hanging fruit to coordinate our defense. Tell me the last time he has coordinated a good or even respectable defense.

To put it frankly : he sucks. SUCKS

w/o the fumble and missed FG; I doubt you venture into this thread at the point you did, right?

it is pretty aggravating that in year 1 at Michigan Harbaugh has defense better than any Kelly has had in 6 years with the exception of 2012.

The D did pretty well IMO. Yes, their fullbacks gave us some problems, but the D played much better in the 2nd half. Good win.

We are mediocre on defense. They will show up for a few series but they will disappear for a few series. In year 6, expectations should be higher.

How come we only go for "okay" now? We used to go for "pretty good".

Who has meat chicken played? BYU was way over rated and Northwestern was just living on a prayer. Let's see how good they are when they play someone who can fight back and then you can make a comment about how good they are.

Navy's corner picks Kizer clean.......but Russell cannot cover a NAVY WR close??????

Russell doesn't seem to be playing quite as well this year, compared with 2013. Maybe he bulked up too much in the weight room and lost some speed? Not sure. He looks bigger.

Kizer's still a redshirt freshman and makes some mistakes. But overall he's doing great IMO. 22/30 today for 281 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT.

They played pretty good D against Utah the first game of the season.
ND's schedule hasn't really been any tougher to this point. UMass is awful, Texas played us with their second best QB...we have essentially played one good team and haven't come close to shutting anyone out. 3 shutouts in a row is impressive, I don't care who you are playing. But I do agree, the MSU game will tell us a lot about Michigan.

In 2013, Russell wasn't left on a island all game. In this type of defense you have to have elite level corners, and they isn't alot of them out there. Russell and Luke are good but if you are not getting to the QB. Notre Dame played alot more 2deep zone. Notre Dame needs some stud pass rushers like Justin Tuck again.

Scoreboard! VG will be back! Will some of you be back?

Seriously I say this every week.... you people talking about BVG are tools! He is calling plays and can't control the players out there nor can he determine the talent we have. Some of you have this ridiculous thought that our defense is stacked so deep we should be the best in the country and it just isn't the case. Our secondary is average and so is our pass rush. It would be different if kids like Max and Cole were playing as good as people thought when recruited but they haven't panned out yet.

Regardless this is a dumb argument and BVG has done a good job this season. He had to deal with huge amount of injuries last year and things didn't start off well this year when Williams wasn't allowed back after suspension and Crawford got injured.

yea! who needs coaches!

Again. Never post during a game . You are liable to make an a** out of yourself.
I stand by what I said and my opinion was not formed based on one half of football. He's proven to be an average defensive coordinator at best. With the talent we have, is it really too much to ask for a top 20 defense?

Yeah, let's just ignore the 250 yards rushing in the first half like it never happened. He appears to redeem himself because when you look so horrible for 30 minutes and play competent for the next, you look good in contrast. Also, let's not forget that we faced Navy's BACKUP QB for most of the last 30 minutes.

You feel good about our defense next week? Sorry for expecting championship caliber football in year SIX of a coach's tenure.

It's a game of adjustments and he adjusted well in the second half. Is he one of the top DC in the country? Maybe not, but it's hard to get a bunch of elite defensive recruits at ND so I believe he has done a very good job this season

I know every game we give up huge plays regardless of the quality of the opponent.
U give up big plays next week against Suckisian's can only score on big plays O ... you are in trouble. Washington showed how you beat USC , keep the ball in front of you ( don't cover TE he is never used ) selective blitz on Kessler pending on SC predictable formations, U will give up some run plays to stop the big pass but Snark will not keep running the ball. So don't sweat it.
On O run the ball up the gut , and run the qb on pass plays he is never covered ... pick on the frosh corners and linebackers with crossing routes. A nicely timed trick play will score too.
You lose to this USC team at home ... you have issues.

We easily have the talent for a top 20 or even top 10 defense according to recruiting rankings. Look at Michigan!

Seems like the whole isn't as good as the sum of the parts. Rushing defense has been suspect overall this year while pass defense has been decent. We have a chance to rise to the challenge against an elite passing team next week. How will we fare?

I will give him credit over the last two weeks for making halftime adjustments, but why do they start the games so unprepared?

Let's start seeing some consistently strong defensive performances and I will start to change my mind. Big picture: he has given up close to four touchdowns a game on average since he took over for Diaco.

I don't see a well coached defense out there. Well coached defenses don't let Umass and Navy take take halfback dives for 50-60 yard TD runs. In four years of Diaco, I don't ever remember defensive breakdowns like that.

Then you don't remember the 2010 Navy game when the fullback had 200 yards I believe

If it's BVG making the halftime adjustments, then he's doing pretty well with that. But I do wish we'd see them come out strong once in a while and not having to wait until the 2nd half to see them play well.

Drew Tranquil is a very big loss. That 1st half he played against GT was the best 1/2 of a football game I've seen from an ND player. Offense or Defense. He was killin it. The dummy.

I think Russell is playing decently. How many actual games has he started in his career? I don't think he's doing too badly after not playing last year.

The guy I'm disappointed in this year is Joe Schmidt. He looks like a frosh again. He needs to get much better.

Edited to say I disagree about what you said about BVG saying, "Nor can he determine the talent..." That's a pretty big key responsibility needed in a skill set of a DC.

I remember ND losing to Navy with Diaco as DC - do you remember? Have the Irish lost to Navy with BVG as DC...hmmm. /crickets/

I do not think this a good comparison. Kizer's pass was shirt and to the inside shoulder instead of the outside shoulder. The Navy pass was to the outside and Russell did stop much of a gain after the catch. The QBs actions contributed to both outcomes.

well said as usual. gave up 3 points in the second half. some here always dwell on the negative. i'll take a win all day long. that's the only goal that is truly important. win the game. I'm a long time coach. I could care less about style points.

there's your first mistake. using recruiting rankings to determine how good a team should be. unprepared ? what do you think they do in practice all week ? because the opponent has some success the coaches aren't doing their jobs ? just silly.
