Urban running off commit

It was the medical staff, not Urban. I believe they wanted Dean badly. Plus, this was an issue in January, almost a full month before NLIT day.

National Championship = fresh coat of teflon.

So many discussions of football programs end with how the head coach is the responsible person--e.g. boosters interfering with recruiting, players selling autographs, players not going to class--that should be true here as well with this scholarship. There's no room for "the buck stops...errr...uhhh...over there!"

Someone needs to explain what exactly Urban did wrong here?

They offered to honor the scholarship, but they weren't going to let him on the field.

If this kid decides that playing football is more important then his education, that is 1000% on him. Not on Urban or any other head coach.

'Dean was offered a medical scholarship which would allow him to
remain at Ohio State but not participate in football. Wilkinson
confirmed that offer but said Dean had declined."They're saying
they're going to honor his scholarship, but honoring his scholarship
doesn't allow him to play the game he loves to play," Wilkinson said. "It's all ridiculous and I don't appreciate them treating my kid this way."

So, OSU offered to honor a scholarship for the kid (basically meaning a free education), but, because the medical staff deemed he was not competition ready and decided to look out for the kid's well being declined to clear him -- I fail to see where Urban (or anyone associated with OSU) did anything wrong.

Early enrollee from Florida, graduated early from high school to compete for position based on, what the report suggests, was the advice of the buckeye coaching staff. Only coincidental that Urban needs to trim his roster by two or three players.

Any number of posters have complained that Urban will recruit just to keep some kids away from competitors.

So the kid is offered a free ride for 4 years regardless if he plays football. The medical staff won't allow him to play and all of sudden Urban and OSU are evil. Wow! The kid can transfer to another school and play on a scholarship if he is medically cleared. I don't see this as a big deal at all. I don't see Meyer trimming his roster by getting rid of a 4-Star that just stepped on campus not too long ago. Either he stays and gets a free education worth well over $100 k or he goes to another school and receives the same scholarship with the possibility of getting to play. I am not going to feel bad for this kid nor blame OSU and I hate OSU more than any other football program other than FSU.

I don't see what the problem really is. Can't the kid still play at OSU, say walk on or get medical clearance during the summer?

If you guys don't see the problem here, you're drinking the Urban Kool-Aid.

The guy had a torn ACL last year, but was committed to OSU. He was talked into early entry by the coaching staff. That was not his original plan or choice. Once on campus and participating in team activities, he was denied medical clearance. His own doctors, including James Andrews say that he would likely be ready for full contact by the summer with continued rehab. OSU offers him a medical scholarship, which doesn't count against it's 85 limit.

I agree with his HS coaches. He was totally played by OSU. They pulled a dirty trick. By getting him to enroll early, they were able to lock him up AND evaluate his knee without losing him to another program. If he was 100%, then he would have stayed. They had to know it was unlikely he would be ready for spring ball. This was a tricky way to dump a scholarship and get closer to the 85 limit, which they are 2 or 3 over right now. What if he didn't get talked into EE. He would have shown up in the summer and been cleared. This was an easy out for the Bucks.

Sure, ee could have stayed with a free scholly, as many pointed out. However, he is a football player who wants to play football! He has every right to walk away. I hope he gets an NCAA waiver so that he can play with another team this fall.

He was a three star prospect with very few major offers. Who was OSU trying to keep, him from? Who was going to take a 3 star prospect coming off of two knee surgeries. If Meyer was worried about being over the scholarship limit he could have rescinded the offer and Dean would have had no opportunity for a college scholarship. The word from OSU's coaches was that they always had high hopes for Dean.

It s a good point about the doctors at OSU not being able to evaluate him until he was on the team. If they could have he probably wouldn't have been given a scholarship.

It's one thing for Dr. Andrews to say he would be healthy enough to engage in full contact. I would be healthy enough to engage in full contact drills at OSU. But I wouldn't be a productive member of the team as I wouldn't last very long. I don't know what the criteria was for his evaluation, but if the injuries despite being healed will now limit his ability to be productive and stay on the field, then giving him the opportunity for a free education is now a gift.

Dean doesn't see it that way and I can understand. Meyer makes the decisions for what is best for the team, not what an individual player would like.

Now let's talk about the other players who Meyer used the medical waiver in to clear scholarship space. Like Armani Reeves who was the starting Nickle-back last year and would have been a likely starter this year. Some excuse about multiple concussions.

Or how about Devan Bogard, a major contributor on special teams and on the two deep at safety. Anyone want to mention how Meyer manipulated him to leave after 3 knee injuries in three years? Or Ron Tanner, another productive and consistent special, teams guy who also received multiple knee injuries.

If Meyer just wanted to clear scholarship space, there were certainly players with less productivity and potential than the guys who were taken off the football team.

OSU and Urban did the right thing. I don 't think that any parent would want to see his child play any sport if that Child was not medical cleared to play.
The Kid came in on a football scholarship, but can not play football, so OSU will give him a free Education.
If football is more important to the young man and his family. He can always transfer to another school , and try to get medical clearance from that new school !

Yeah, dont let the facts get in the way of jealously hating the man that most here salivated for and you practically fired a coach because you thought it was a done deal. Lol
